I actually remembered to update the fantasy chess standings! Hand Knit remains comfortably in front. I took into account both sections of the Gashimov Memorial (based on the "lots of 2700 players involved" rule) and included the first Women's Grand Prix as well.

Why did Kamsky and Gareev draw so early (move 14) in the US Chess Championships? I'm vaguely aware that grandmaster draws are A Thing, but it seems really dumb.

That seems like a dumb incentive structure. The event feels kind of meaningless if the best US player isn't playing.

Seems like having a world chess champion is becoming a drain on the Norwegian government.

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/may/16/cost-magnus-carlsen-vishy-anand-chess-rematch

They're being asked to stump up $15m for the Olympiad in Tromso, and $7m for the World Championship. Maybe they should just move them both to Vegas...

They've already shelled out $12.6m for the Olympiad, but now Tromsø need $2.5m more. Not sure if they're bluffing or not, but they're threatening to cancel the Olympiad if they don't get the extra money…

IT IS SAID THE TEARS OF THE BWEENIX CAN HEAL ALL WOUNDS

Sounds startlingly like the plot to Chess: The Musical. Which I just had the pleasure of playing, pit-wise. Fantastic music, mediocre plot, but includes the American staging a walkout asking to be paid more per game.

And the Lord said, "Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.
The question I have to ask is, why does it cost so much? Let's take a look at what is needed to run this event:

Prize Pool: $1.4 million last time, let's say $1.5 mil.
Venue: Norway is a developed country, there are many places that can host an event of this scale. The 2013 World Championship was at a hotel, and they probably hosted it for free or at a heavily discounted rate so they can sell rooms. Let's assume $500,000.
Accommodation/travel: Both competitors and their coaches and support personnel. Let's go high here, around 40 rooms total, $1,000/night for 30 days, that's $1.2 Million, plus let's toss in $300,000 for first class airline tickets for everybody.
Broadcasting: The cost of livestreaming events has gone way down, and you have to assume any broadcast would be supported by commercial sponsorship. Since we can, let's assume this isn't the case and allocate $500,000 to broadcasting.
Administrative: Accounting, legal, arbiter's fees, taxes, security, there are a lot of smaller expenses that need to be paid for to make an event like this run. Let's budget $500,000 to those.

A lot of these estimates are on the high side, but even with these figures you have a grand total of $4.5 million, which is quite a bit less than that $7 million quoted. That's not even including commercial sponsorship or other sources of revenue. There is a lot of belt tightening that can be done, you could play it in a $100/night hotel and stream online using generally available equipment and the total would easily be less than $1 million plus the prize pool.

And also FIDE changed the rules while (literally, I think) Tromsø were writing their Application, so they had to arrange the world cup last year and that came from the money they got for hosting the olympiad. That's basically the entire sum they're trying to scrape together now.

I believe FIDE takes a third of the money. It's their major source of financing.

That's quite the lineup! I don't want to go back and retroactively count it, though, and I've shied away from counting team leagues/competitions in general. With the obvious exception of the Olympiad, because it would be silly not to include that in any Fantasy Chess game.

You have a good point, though I will point out that the prize pool last time around was about $2.55 million -- Carlsen alone won about $1.53 million, while Anand had to settle for adding another $1 million+ to his money pile.

So Norway Chess is on RIGHT NOW. In the first round all games were draws, but Grischuk blundered against Caruana and lost. Too bad.

During the live show it was also revealed that the final 12 million NOK were secured for the chess olympiad in Tromsø! Phew.

The Alekhine Memorial won't count towards the fantasy chess standings, as there are no 2700+ players involved. However, there is a Women's Grand Prix going on right now in Georgia that has a number of league members participating, for those who want to keep up with such things.
