Why do we fight wars?

For pretty borders.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a book that covers the Xinhai Revolution? Preferably covering the last years of the Qing Dynasty and the aftermath as well.

If you don't mind books written immediately after the revolution:

A good overview of the revolution itself, including hostilities, was written by Edwin Dingle in "China's revolution 1911-1912": https://archive.org/details/chinasrevolution000821mbp
A summary of economic, social and political conditions in the immediate aftermath, including foreign policies towards China, is covered in Bland's "Recent Events and Present Policies in China": https://archive.org/details/recenteventspres00blan
The more long-term period of Yuan Shih-kai's government was also described in "American Diplomat in China" by Reinsch: https://archive.org/details/americandiplomat00reiniala

Also, the Cambridge edition on China history provides an excellent primer on a whole range of topics, but unfortunately doesn't cover military matters in great detail.

Thank you, but I was thinking more modern books for a layman. I don't mind if it doesn't cover military matters either.

Early Modern Germany is kind of a niche thing.

What made you want to study it? (Also, you are a teaching professor, correct?)

The Romans actually tightened up when faced with horse archer attack. They did the famous testudo that Hollywood tends to misuse, and then were scattered by the cataphracts when they charged.

The testudo is meant to protect from missile attacks, right? How does Hollywood misuse it?

How effective were the various European resistance movements during World War 2, particularly the French? And were there similar resistance groups in areas under Japanese occupation?

If the Japanese military was so obsessed with the idea of forcing a ~Decisive Battle~™® with the American navy, why build carriers in the first place? Isn't that doctrine orientated towards battleships?

Well, not just any books. You have to make sure the sources are good, the reasoning is good, and the reviewers liked them. Lots of books look fine but it turns out they're actually crap.

Speaking of which, has anyone in this thread read this: http://www.amazon.com/The-Balkans-Nationalism-Powers-1804-1999/dp/0140233776

Is it any good?

Did "shieldmaidens" or female warriors actually exist among the Norse in any actual capacity, or were they very rare, or did they just exist in legends?
