The coat of arms of Bermuda: “Quo Fata Ferunt” means “Where the Fates carry us.” The ship is Sea Venture, which crashed into the island during a storm in July of 1609. It was on its way to Jamestown, Virginia, when it was separated from the other ships by the storm, and it began taking on water as it had just been built and the timbers had not been given enough time to set. It hit the island, and the 150 people aboard were stranded for nine months. In that time, they built two new ships from the wreckage of Sea Venture and from other wood on the island, and finally reached Jamestown in 1610. Bermuda has been a British territory ever since.
