All the same height and all the same weight
All the same voice and much the same shape
Pressed to a pattern and shoved into a line
Bled by the rich and led by the blind
Progress, progress, there's progress
Progress, progress, there's progress

Such is the joining of people to state
The state is the father, the mother and mate
It knows how you think, it says what you need
With total conviction it prints what you read
Progress, progress, there's progress
Progress, progress, there's progress

Mongrelise, centralise, kept to your place
All the same colour and all the same race
Freedom is freedom from dissident views
Eyes full of terror and authorised news
Progress, progress, there's progress
Progress, progress, there's progress

It's best to be humble and do as you're told
To speak as you're taught and die when you're old
For such is the meaning of Marx and his words
Wine for the reds and chains for the herd
And death to the swine who are killed good and red
And death to the swine who are killed good and red
Progress, progress, there's progress (repeated to end of song)
And you get a life and we go to hell
And this is the way, welcome to hell (repeated to end as interwoven chant)

Víctor Jara was taken prisoner not long after the 1973 Pinochet coup against Salvador Allende. He was taken to the stadium that now bears his name, then used as a concentration camp. He was savagely tortured and beaten. His hands were broken. His corpse was shot over forty times, and dumped in the slums of Santiago.

Be careful with that assertion. White supremacists where largely told to gently caress off by the punk scene, so they instead started targetting the Skinhead scene instead.

And Skinhead was basically a UK appropriation of Jamaican Rudeboy culture and music with a local working-class-lads twist.

As to why they decided that they wanted to be "Skinheads" and then just to be confusing, skinheads who listened to a bastardised version of street-punk instead of Reggae and ska, whilst racing around being racists instead of jamaicaphiles as was tradition with the skinhead scene is anyones guess.

There was never much of an affinity between punk and racism. Couple of earlier punk bands stupidly wore swastikas until the NF started turning up to gigs and the gluesniffers decided the nazi poo poo was probably a bad idea. But other than that its always been firmly taboo in that scene. Skinhead however, yeah , as loving strange as it was for a historical perspective, I guess the nazis just liked the violence in the scene and decided to appropriate that and the shaved heads whilst carefuly airbrushing out the skinhead movements roots in black culture.

When invited to perform at the White House for the first time in 1970, Richard Nixon's office requested that he play "Okie from Muskogee" (a satirical Merle Haggard song about people who despised youthful drug users and war protesters) and "Welfare Cadillac" (a Guy Drake song which denies the integrity of welfare recipients). Cash declined to play either and instead selected other songs, including "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" (about a brave Native American World War II veteran who was mistreated upon his return to Arizona), and his own compositions, "What Is Truth" and "Man in Black".

"Why Can't We Be Friends?" is a song by the band War. The song has a simple structure, with the phrase "Why can't we be friends?" being sung four times after each two-line verse amounting to over forty times in under four minutes. It was played in space when NASA beamed it to the linking of Soviet cosmonauts and U.S. astronauts in 1975 for the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project.

Tom Clay - What the World Needs Now Is Love/Abraham, Martin and John (1971)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y36L2EIYlMQ

The part with Ted's eulogy for his brother Bobby Kennedy is particularly emotional:

quote:

Like it or not, we live in times of danger and uncertainty. That is the way he lived, that is what he leaves us. My brother need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life. Be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it.

Those of us who loved him, and who take him to his rest today, pray that what he was, to us, what he wished for others, will some day come to pass for all the world. As he said many times, in many parts of this nation, those he touched, and who sought to touch him.

This morning I heard this song on the radio for the first time in three years:

Ten Years After - I'd Love To Change The World
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7-8sCLWwLk

quote:

Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity
Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more?

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, Monopoly

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

World pollution, there's no solution
Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do...
So I'll leave it up to you

And I've always thought this was a good companion song, answering the questions (in a hippy-dippy sort of way) posed by the first song:

England Dan & John Ford Coley - Love Is The Answer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QZjJU-mtFU

quote:

...

Who knows why
Someday we all must die
We're all homeless boys and girls
And we are never heard
It's such a lonely, lonely, lonely world
People turn their heads
And walk on by
Tell me is it worth just another try

...

And when you feel afraid
(Love one another)
When you've lost your way
(Love one another)
And when you're all alone
(Love one another)
And when you're far from home
(Love one another)
And when you're down and out
(Love one another)
And when your hopes run out
(Love one another)
And when you need a friend
(Love one another)
And when you're near the end
(Love)
(We've got to love)
(We've got to love one another)

And to round this post out:

Three Dog Night - Easy To Be Hard
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeXcaRYNlSQ

quote:

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no

Especially people who care about strangers
Who care about evil and social injustice
Do you only care about the bleeding crowd
How about a needing friend, I need a friend

How can people be so heartless
You know I'm hung up on you
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no

Especially people who care about strangers
Who care about evil and social injustice
Do you only care about the bleeding crowd
How about a needing friend, we all need a friend

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel

Easy to be proud
Easy to say no
Easy to be cold
Easy to say no

(Come on)
Easy to give in
Easy to say no
Easy to be cold
Easy to say no
Much too easy to say no...

Even the most important words are worn by use
Washed out like our suits
But I want to raise into the greatest glory
The most noble of words: Party!

Alone not even a man of note
Could raise a five-span log
Not to mention a five-story house,
five-story house. Party!

Party - millions of shoulders
Firmly joined as a huge force
Party - with co-operation builds
Its structures cloud-high! Party!

Party - spine of the working class!
Party - unfailing support of the poor!
Party gives our ideals immortality
Today serving;
Tomorrow the empires of robber barons
Wiping off the map
The empires of robber barons
Wiping off the map

Brains of the class, cause of the class
Strength of the class, honour of the class
Brains of the class, cause of the class
Strength, honour of the class
The party is all of that!

Brains of the class, cause of the class
Strength of the class, honour of the class
Brains of the class, cause of the class
Strength, honour of the class
The party is all of that!

This one is Brecht's Lob des Lernens so I won't provide a translation here. According to the Youtube blurb this isn't the original composition by Hanns Eisler but a newer one by Eero Ojanen.

e: Eh I guess I'll throw in Tapio Rautavaara's rendition of Ontuva Eriksson (Limping Eriksson) which isn't exactly political but ham-fisted social commentary* is pretty D&D, right?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpjESEykWe8

Bad translation mine again.

Limping Eriksson is dead and many are pleased.
He won't be shambling to park gates to beg anymore.
Though many are escorted down into the peace of the graveyard with tears,
no-one cried for you... Or did they, Eriksson?

And now he has left his parks, he has arrived in heaven.
Not quite inside, but at the gate, he remains with his hat.
Get a little bit closer to the gates, so you'll see what has been promised.
You can hope to be part of it yourself... Or could [sic] you, Eriksson?

Such a celebration has he never seen on earth.
And wonder - the pauper is now being handed alms.
Now they're showing in front of the creator how good the devout are.
And fill your hat with advice... Is that enough, Eriksson?

Finally night fell in heaven and the gates were being closed.
Right in front of a limping man, and the key was turned.
You already experienced this on earth. It has been your lot.
And your lot is also to remain quiet... Or is it, Eriksson?

The man limps quietly behind the wall and seeks safety in his coat.
At least it won't rain tonight and there are no police around.
It's probably best for you to be behind the gates of heaven.
The music of the harps would be too much... Or would it, Eriksson?

*) Or possibly just a straight-up morality play.

Y'know, the more I think on the lyrics to this song, the less it becomes about caring about the people around you in your everyday life and bringing that worldly compassion home, and the more it becomes about the singer asking a liberal to have sex with him.

---

I was planning on putting together a Neil Young themed post, but I think this one deserves to stand alone. When I first heard this in concert I instantly fell in love with it. In many ways it reminds me of Hunter S. Thompson's "Wave Speech."

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Walk Like A Giant
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub1qw2MmVOM

quote:

I used to walk like a giant on the land,
Now I feel like a leaf floating in a stream.
I wanna walk like a giant,
I wanna walk like a giant on the land.

Me and some of my friends,
We were gonna save the world.
We were trying to make it better,
We were ready to save the world.

But then the weather changed,
And the white got stained,
And it fell apart.
And it breaks my heart.

To think about how close we came...

I wanna walk like a giant on the land.
I wanna walk like a giant on the land.

The tracks ahead were long and straight.
We were riding on The Desert Wind.
We were pullin' into Spiritual,
Ridin' on The Desert Wind.

We could see it in the distance,
Getting closer every minute.
We saw the lights of Spiritual shining,
Getting closer every minute.

Then we skipped the rails,
And we started to fail,
And we folded up,
And it's not enough.

To think about how close we came...

I wanna walk like a giant on the land.
I wanna walk like a giant on the land.

Whenever I see the big fire coming,
Coming to burn down all my ideas.
I try to hold on to my thinking,
And remember how it feels.

When I'm looking right in your eyes
And hearing your happy laughing.
When I'm seeing your blue eyes shining,
And hear your happy laughing.

So the moment came,
And the big sky rained,
And it put out the fire,
Except in my desire.

When I think about how good it feels.

I wanna walk like a giant on the land.
I wanna walk like a giant on the land.

I used to walk like a giant on the land,
Now I feel like a leaf floating in a stream.
I wanna walk like a giant,
I wanna walk like a giant on the land.

Eric Bogle - The Band played Waltzing Mathilda is such a depressing anti-war song :(
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG48Ftsr3OI

quote:

Now when I was a young man, I carried me pack, and I lived the free life of a rover
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback, well, I waltzed my Matilda all over.
Then in 1915, my country said son, It's time you stopped rambling, there's work to be done.
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun, and they marched me away to the war.

And the band played Waltzing Matilda, as the ship pulled away from the quay
And amidst all the cheers, the flag-waving and tears, we sailed off for Gallipoli
And how well I remember that terrible day, how our blood stained the sand and the water
And of how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay, we were butchered like lambs at the slaughter.
Johnny Turk he was waiting, he'd primed himself well. He shower'd us with bullets,
And he rained us with shell. And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell
Nearly blew us right back to Australia.

But the band played Waltzing Matilda, when we stopped to bury our slain.
We buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs, then we started all over again.
And those that were left, well we tried to survive, in that mad world of blood, death and fire
And for ten weary weeks, I kept myself alive, though around me the corpses piled higher
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head, and when I woke up in my hospital bed,
And saw what it had done, well I wished I was dead. Never knew there was worse things than dyin'.

For I'll go no more waltzing Matilda, all around the green bush far and free
To hump tent and pegs, a man needs both legs-no more waltzing Matilda for me.
So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed, and they shipped us back home to Australia.
The legless, the armless, the blind, the insane, those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay, I looked at the place where me legs used to be.
And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me, to grieve, to mourn, and to pity.

But the band played Waltzing Matilda, as they carried us down the gangway.
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared, then they turned all their faces away
And so now every April, I sit on me porch, and I watch the parades pass before me.
And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march, reviving old dreams of past glories
And the old men march slowly, old bones stiff and sore. They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask, what are they marching for? And I ask myself the same question.

But the band plays Waltzing Matilda, and the old men still answer the call,
But as year follows year, more old men disappear. Someday no one will march there at all.
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda, who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
And their ghosts may be heard as they march by that billabong, who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?

Found this song today while researching for an essay on evangelicalism in the U.S. Written by Joe Hill, who's been mentioned in the thread before, mocking religious opposition to unionization:

What's really interesting about this is that it's one of many popular songs co-opted by labor. Joe Hill was a master at taking songs and changing the lyrics to support labor. The Preacher and the Slave was a parody of In the Sweet Bye and Bye, a song that would have been well-known by the workers that Joe Hill and the Wobblies were trying to organize.

Here's a version sung by Johnny Cash and June Carter:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYyPnpPdV6U

quote:

i was just seventeen
in a world getting mean
so my mind took a decade long walk
since its return
ive grown more than concerned
and i think that it’s time for a talk

love the lord trash the planet
yeah we already know
adopt a poor foreign child
can’t you just let it go?
spread like dust in the breeze
population control!
im not saying we’re all guilty
but we sure as hell know

im all fire and brimstone when i write
but i wont leave my seat to join the fight

so put the nail in the coffin i’ll be resting my head
an average male in america
i’d contribute more dead
and when they rail against our actions
or lack thereof im sure we’ll find
shame at last inside
we didn’t even need to read between the lines

im running on outdated hardware
while shopping for phones
in an overcrowded everywhere
alone together we foam
wielding absolute knowledge
in the palm of my hand
i parouse tits and rear end
how was this your god’s plan?

id say we need to get outside
but there’s no point for the half the country
it’s all cops and crops and parking lots
woods turned into housing plots

so the green spaces fleet
while the food deserts creep
outward from the parts of town
where wealthy hide the black and brown

im all fire and brimstone when i write
but i wont leave my seat to join the fight

so put the nail in the coffin i’ll be resting my head
an average male in america
i’d contribute more dead

nothing we say’s gonna make a difference
nothing I do’s gonna make a difference
nothing we say’s gonna make a difference
nothing you do’s gonna make a difference

gonna make a difference
gonna make a difference
gonna make a difference
gonna make a difference

i was just seventeen

Steve Earle - Warrior
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6jm06HFZ2o

quote:

This is the best time of the day—the dawn
The final cleansing breath unsullied yet
By acrid fume or death’s cacophony
The rank refuse of unchained ambition
And pray, deny me not but know me now,
Your faithful retainer stands resolute
To serve his liege lord without recompense
Perchance to fall and perish namelessly
No flag-draped bier or muffled drum to set
The cadence for a final dress parade
But it was not always thus—remember?
Once you worshipped me and named me a god
In many tongues and made offering lest
I exact too terrible a tribute

Take heed for I am weary, ancient
And decrepit now and my time grows short
There are no honorable frays to join

Only mean death dealt out in dibs and dabs
Or horror unleashed from across oceans
Assail me not with noble policy
For I care not at all for platitude
And surrender such tedious detail
To greater minds than mine and nimbler tongues
Singular in their purpose and resolve
And presuming to speak for everyman

Oh, for another time, a distant field
And there a mortal warrior’s lonely grave
But duty charges me remain until
The end the last battle of the last war
Until that ‘morrow render unto me
That which is mine my stipend well deserved
The fairest flower of your progeny
Your sons, your daughters your hopes and your dreams
The cruel consequence of your conceit

You could follow logic or contest it all
The work solution makes the common house a home
The element of progress that you mention is gone
It de-evolved to something you were headed toward

As I lay to die the things I think
Did I waste my time? I think I did, I worked for life
All we want are just pretty little homes
Our work makes pretty little homes
Like a cast shadow, like a fathers dream
Have a cut out son, what's a worse disease

To get that pretty little home, as I lay to die the things I think
I don't want to regret what I did and work for life
All we want are just pretty little homes
Our work makes pretty little homes
Agenda suicide, the drones work hard before they die
And give up on pretty little homes

Our work makes pretty little homes
Our work makes pretty little homes
Agenda suicide, the drones work hard before they die
And give up on pretty little homes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3_cS_iQ-w0

quote:

Who's the man who hired all the criminals,
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors?
They bend the facts to fit with their new stories,
Of why we have to send our men to war.

Let's impeach the President for spying,
On citizens inside their own homes.
Breaking every law in the country,
By tapping our computers and telephones.

Alabama

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD3bGEFxGC0

quote:

Oh Alabama
The devil fools with the best laid plan.
Swing low Alabama.
You got the spare change, you've got to feel strange,
And now the moment is all that it meant.

Ohio

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkg-bzTHeAk

quote:

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it,
Soldiers are cutting us down.
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her,
And found her dead on the ground.
How can you run when you know?

Southern Man

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVRxdPWV3RM

quote:

I saw cotton,
And I saw black.
Tall white mansions,
And little shacks.
Southern man,
When will you
pay them back?
I heard screamin',
And bullwhips cracking,
How long? How long?

American Dream

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBIEjt5yz8A

quote:

Reporters crowd around your house,
Going through your garbage like a pack of hounds,
Speculating what they may find out.
It don't matter now, you're all washed up.

Don't know when things went wrong,
Might have been when you were young and strong.
American dream, American dream.

Rockin' In The Free World

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGTzMvXTUiY

quote:

There's colors on the street,
Red, white and blue.
People shufflin' their feet,
People sleepin' in their shoes.
But there's a warnin' sign on the road ahead.
There's a lot of people sayin' we'd be better off dead.
Don't feel like Satan, but I am to them.
So I try to forget it any way I can.

Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

I see a woman in the night with a baby in her hand,
Under an old street light near a garbage can.
Now she puts the kid away, and she's gone to get a hit.
She hates her life and what she's done to it.
There's one more kid that will never go to school,
Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool.

Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

We got a thousand points of light for the homeless man.
We got a kinder, gentler, machine gun hand.
We got department stores and toilet paper.
Got styrofoam boxes for the ozone layer.
Got a man of the people, says keep hope alive!
Got fuel to burn, got roads to drive!

Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

Joe Pug - I Do My Fathers Drugs: http://youtu.be/Bu21mCisNn0

quote:

When the party starts on Monday
Christmas starts in June
When no one minds I've just arrived and I'll be leaving soon
If I return with eyes half-opened
Don't ask me where I was
I do my father's drugs

When every revolution
Is sponsored by the state
There's no bravery in bayonets
In tearing down the gates
If you see me with a rifle
Don't ask me what it's for
I fight my father's war

When hunger strikes are fashion
And freedom is routine
All in all the streets in Cleveland are named for Martin Luther King
You will see me at the protest
But you'll notice that i drag
I burn my father's flag

So when the party starts on Monday
And Christmas starts in June
When no one minds I've just arrived and I'll be leaving soon
If I return with eyes half-opened
Don't ask me where I was
I do my father's drugs
I do my father's drugs

Nation Of Heat - Joe Pug: http://youtu.be/-0rYC4iNiy8

quote:

Across from the prison and beside the great lake
Below the rooftops and above the highways
The spirits pay rental on the basements they haunt
And the pages just draw pictures of the things that they want
I cook my dinner on the blacktop street
I come from the nation of heat

Outside the train station there's a bold painted sign
It says try to be patient don't forget to choose sides
We got the loudest explosions you ever heard
We got two dollar soldiers and ten dollar words
If I didn't own boots I wouldn't need feet
I come from the nation of heat

So swift and so vicious are the carnival rides
And the carnival barker yell your name for a bribe
we got billboards for love and Japanese cars
It ain't rare to hear the streetlights call themselves stars
The more that I learn the more that I cheat
I come from the nation of heat

I seen skeleton mothers and hungry folks
Across the street from the kitchens that cookin for most
Sometimes you hear whispers by the dark of the moon
That we promised too much and gave it too soon
Even our coughs and our fevers compete
I come from the nation of heat

Blockin borders with smiles are immigrant sons
we measure loneliness and miles and misery in tons
There's a staw-hatted man rowing away from the shore
Who says "It's a shame they don't let you have slaves here anymore"
I'm the ugliest man that you'll ever meet
I come from the nation of heat

Oi Polloi - gently caress Everybody Who Voted Tory
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1uSSRcn7UE

quote:

In 1979 the Labour government was brought down over its failure to grant even limited autonomy to Scotland as had been promised in its manifesto. Disastrously, the following saw Margaret Thatcher installed as Prime Minister and ushered in the nightmare scenario of years of right-wing Tory government. Since then we've seen the systematic erosion of civil liberties, the destruction of the trade union movement and the wholesale dismantling of the welfare state and National Health Service - not to mention increased state control of television and the press, and the abolition of the right to silence.

Machine gun toting police on our streets

Tories win in '79 - come and join the dole queue line
Smash the unions crush the poor - welcome to 1984

gently caress everybody who voted Tory

Company director, vivisector
High court judge and poll tax collector

gently caress everybody who voted Tory

Yuppies who don't care about human need
People motivated only by their greed
Selfish, grasping fools who believe the media story,
gently caress everybody who voted Tory!

Right-wing, Christian, merchant banker
Dirty scab, fox hunting wanker

gently caress everybody who voted Tory

Police - army of the rich, Mary Whitehouse - fuckin' bitch
gently caress the Queen - the fuckin' slag, n' fuckin' Thatcher, fuckin' hag

gently caress everybody who voted Tory

gently caress everybody who voted Tory

"I can see the Labour Party coming to power in the next election - maybe, maybe not - who knows? But it doesn't really make a difference who's in power - the State remains the same, the structure is still there, they just tinker with it a little here and there."

Come And See

We're all awash in a sea of blood, and the least we can do is wave to each other.

Here's two that I think make a good combo:

The Godfathers - Birth, School, Work, Death

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QO5dcW0P75M

quote:

I've been abused and I've been confused,
And I've kissed Margaret Thatcher's shoes.
And I been high and I been low,
And I don't know where to go.

Birth, school, work, death.
Birth, school, work, death.

I cut myself but I don't bleed,
'Cause I don't get what I need.
Doesn't matter what I say,
Tomorrow's still another day.

Birth, school, work, death.
Birth, school, work, death.

I'll live and die don't ask me why,
I wanna go to paradise.
And I don't need your sympathy,
There's nothing in this world for me.

The Replacements - Unsatisfied

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU6IndADEWI

quote:

Look me in the eye,
Then, tell me that I'm satisfied.
Was you satisfied?
Look me in the eye,
Then, tell me that I'm satisfied.
Hey, are you satisfied?

And it goes so slowly on,
Everything I've ever wanted...
Tell me what's wrong.

Everything goes,
Well, anything goes all of the time.
Everything you dream of,
Is right in front of you.
And everything is a lie...

Come And See

We're all awash in a sea of blood, and the least we can do is wave to each other.

A few pages back someone mentioned that political songs don't get much airplay (other than maybe 2Pac's Changes). Canadian content laws dictate that popular radio be at least 35% Canadian, so in addition to all the Neil Young we also get to hear songs like these:

Bruce Cockburn - If I Had A Rocket Launcher
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1kbqtoiYqs

quote:

Here comes the helicopter, second time today.
Everybody scatters and hopes it goes away.
How many kids they've murdered only God can say.
If I had a rocket launcher,
If I had a rocket launcher
If I had a rocket launcher, I'd make somebody pay.

I don't believe in guarded borders and I don't believe in hate.
I don't believe in generals or their stinking torture states.
And when I talk with the survivors of things too sickening to relate,
If I had a rocket launcher,
If I had a rocket launcher
If I had a rocket launcher, I would retaliate.

On the Rio Lacantun, one hundred thousand wait,
To fall down from starvation, or some less humane fate.
Cry for Guatemala, with a corpse in every gate.
If I had a rocket launcher,
If I had a rocket launcher
If I had a rocket launcher, I would not hesitate

I want to raise every voice, at least I've got to try.
Every time I think about it water rises to my eyes.
Situation desperate. Echoes of the victims cry:
If I had a rocket launcher,
If I had a rocket launcher
If I had a rocket launcher, some son of a bitch would die.

Five Man Electrical Band - I'm A Stranger Here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUHXXai0Drg

quote:

Well, I'm a stranger here in this place called Earth,
And I was sent down here to discover the worth,
Of your little blue planet, third from the sun.
Come on and show me what you've done.

We got the aero plane, we got the automobile,
We got sky scraper buildings made of glass and steel.
We've got synthetic food that nearly tastes real,
And a little white pill that makes you feel
A whole lot better when you get out of bed.
You take one in the morning for the long day ahead.
We got everything everybody needs to survive,
Surely the good life has arrived!

I think your atmosphere is hurting my eyes,
And your concrete mountains are blacking out the skies.
Now I don't say that you've been telling me lies,
But why do I hear those children's cries!

I'm a stranger here, I'm just looking around.

I see the aero planes carrying the bombs,
Why, you've even found people to drop them on!
You know you can't keep what you take by force,
But it's only my first impression of course.

And I'm a stranger here on your planet Earth.

We got the rivers and the mountains and the valleys and the trees
We got the birds in the sky, we got the fish in the sea
We got the --

Oh you crazy fools don't you know you had it made!
You were living in paradise...
But take it from one who knows,
Who knows the gates of Heaven can close.
I only pray that you take my advice,
'Cause paradise won't come twice!

Well I'm a stranger here in this place called Earth,
And I was sent down here to discover the worth,
Of your little blue planet third from the sun.
I think I'll go back home where I come from.

The Band - Shape I'm In
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHCVTM6obmo

quote:

Go out yonder, peace in the valley,
Come downtown, have to rumble in the alley.
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in...

Has anybody seen my lady?
This living alone will drive me crazy.
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in...

I'm gonna go down by the water,
But I ain't gonna jump in, no, no.
I'll just be looking for my mak-er,
And I hear that that's where she's been? Oh!

Out of nine lives, I spent seven.
Now, how in the world do you get to Heaven?
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in...

I just spent sixty days in the jailhouse,
For the crime of having no dough.
Now here I am back out on the street,
For the crime of having nowhere to go!

Save your neck or save your brother.
Looks like it's one or the other.
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in...

Now two young kids might start a ruckus,
You know they feel you trying to shuck us.
Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in...

American woman, stay away from me.
American woman, mama let me be.
Don't come a hangin' around my door,
I don't want to see your face no more.
I got more important things to do,
Than spend my time growin' old with you.
Now woman, I said stay away,
American woman, listen what I say.

American woman, get away from me.
American woman, mama let me be.
Don't come a knockin' around my door,
Don't want to see your shadow no more.
Colored lights can hypnotize,
Sparkle someone else's eyes.
Now woman, I said get away.
American woman, listen what I say.

American woman, said get away.
American woman, listen what I say.
Don't come a hangin' around my door,
Don't want to see your face no more.
I don't need your war machines,
I don't need your ghetto scenes!
Colored lights can hypnotize,
Sparkle someone else's eyes.
Now woman, get away from me,
American woman, mama let me be.

Go, gotta get away, gotta get away now go, go, go
I'm gonna leave you woman
Gonna leave you woman
Bye-bye bye-bye, bye-bye, bye-bye
You're no good for me.
I'm no good for you.
Gonna look you right in the eye,
Tell you what I'm gonna do.
You know I'm gonna leave,
You know I'm gonna go.
You know I'm gonna leave,
You know I'm gonna go, woman.
I'm gonna leave you woman
Goodbye American woman!

Tom Cochrane & Red Rider - Calling America (Couldn't find the studio version so this will have to do)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-Idg_qFnd0

quote:

I dreamt I was a refugee,
Who lived outside of town.
My family in a barria shack,
Battered and run down.

We had a friend from America,
Helped out, we took him in.
Like my brother he disappeared,
They said he was with him.

There we were far out at sea,
Somehow we got lost.
Then we landed hard on shore,
There upon the rocks.

While celebration shook the air,
We turned to hear some shots.
There's ones that have been here far too long,
We think they've lost the plot.

Here I go again,
Leaving things out while I'm leaving things in.
Where, where should I begin,
Feeling so full, or feeling so thin?

Calling America,
Man I know you're out there,
Sisters are you breathing?

Calling America,
This thing they call America,
It really is a dream.

Then I stood face to face,
With a girl that I once knew.
She was dressed in gingham there,
In colors red, white and blue.

The more I spoke, the less she heard,
And then she slipped away.
I just stood there sinking,
Far beneath the waves.

Here we go again,
Leaving things out while we're leaving things in.
Where, where should we begin?
Feeling so full, or feeling so thin?

Calling America,
Man I know you're out there,
Sister are you breathing?

Calling America,
This thing they call America,
Really what does it mean?

Calling America,
Man I know you're out there,
Sister are you breathing?

Calling America,
This thing they call America,
It really is a dream.

My great-grandfather was pretty involved with the 1916 Easter Rising, before everything turned all nationalist.

The experience over the years
of nothing getting better
only worse.

quote:

With a warm heart
With the eyes in our beer glasses
At the Fat Adrienne de Montalent
With my buddy Jojo
And my buddy Pierre
We went to drink away our youth
Jojo took himself for Voltaire
And Pierre for Casanova
And I, I was the proudest
I, I was just being myself
And just around midnight, when the notaries walked by
Coming out of the Three Pheasants hotel,
We showed them our asses and our good manners
And sang to them:

The bourgeois are just like pigs
The older they get, the stupider they become
The bourgeois are just like pigs
The older they get, the stupider they ...

With a warm heart
With the eyes in our beer glasses
At the Fat Adrienne de Montalent
With my buddy Jojo
And my buddy Pierre
We went to drink away our youth/twenties
Voltaire danced like a vicar
And Casanova didn’t dare to
And I, I was always the proudest
I was almost as drunk as myself
And just around midnight, when the notaries walked by
Coming out of the Three Pheasants hotel,
We showed them our asses and our good manners
And sang to them:

The bourgeois are just like pigs
The older they get, the stupider they become
The bourgeois are just like pigs
The older they get, the stupider they ...

The hearts are resting
The eyes are firmly on the ground
At the bar of the Three Pheasants hotel
With master Jojo
And master Pierre
Amidst notaries we pass our time
Jojo talks about Voltaire
And Pierre about Casanova
And I, I am still the proudest
I still talk about myself
And it's just around midnight, Mr Commissar,
That every night at the Montalent
These young punks show us their asses
Singing to us:

The bourgeois are just like pigs
The older they get, the stupider they become
They say, Mr. Police Superintendent
The bourgeois
The older they get, the stupider they ...

How about a bit of the master of sarcasm himself, Bertolt "why would you think that my work is in any way revolutionary or anti-government, mister Gestapo FBI Stazi agent?" Brecht.
