Apparently the batteries are crap, but I'm planning on using it while wired in. Hopefully it's not too terrible.

Not looking forward to snaking the wiring through the headliner and such. The most I've done are some interior LED lights that just needed a bit of tie-strapping.

^^ nice catch. I don't envy the Subie one bit.trouser chili posted:I think you'll find it's not too difficult. I just ran up the A-pillar and tucked it into the headliner from there using an old credit card. 2014 VW Sportwagen. Ok, good. I had images in my head of loose interior trim bits hanging everywhere. Sounds much less complicated.

Thanks for the tips. I might have to look at some pictures of my car online, because there's an airbag in the A-pillar. Do you have it wired to the fusebox with a briefcase clip, or are you using the 12 volt?

sbyers77 posted:I thought my car had one in the A pillar because there is a "AIRBAG" sticker on it (and it's certainly big enough to hold one!), but the repair manual shows the airbags are in the steering wheel, seat, and in the headliner above the side doors. Will do. I always thought there was one in there for the same reason ("airbag" is stamped into the a-pillar cover) so I'll look around for a guide.

It's a 2011 KIA Forte EX. I used to peruse the Forte forums, so maybe I'll look there for starters.

So my cam finally came in. No instructions, which I guess should be expected. What have I gotten myself into? "Dash cam that will totally work, honest" The ridged part looks like it unscrews, but doesn't. There's also a button on the top of the round part that looks like O||, which I assume means "record and/or pause". I thought that's what the orange one was for? It came with a 6-prong cable that plugs into the cam, leading to a yellow component cable and three loose wires (yellow, red, black) that I assume are for wiring into the fuse box. What the hell is the component cable for?

I bought a dashcam back in 2014 and don't have a power cable for it. It looks like it uses a mini usb for power but I was wondering if anyone was familiar with these or knows where to get an extra cable. http://imgur.com/Lvk5rNA http://imgur.com/SHSpK7y http://imgur.com/ITeMtpk http://imgur.com/5SgoDMe

What’s the current thread consensus on a good dash cam? I have the one in the OP but the LiPo batter ballooned and soldering in a new one didn’t save it either. I checked on Amazon and there are so many legit looking ones now, I no longer know what I’m looking at. a primate fucked around with this message at 20:50 on Jun 1, 2020 |

Rusty posted:I went for the wirecutter recommendation and it works well. I like that I can do all the settings and grab video from my phone and it's super small and goes behind my mirror. I also ended up getting it like half the price as an ebay refurb so there's that. Neat, I wondered whether those wedge shaped ones were any good. Are the $50-60 ones on Amazon any good? I wasn’t planning to spend over a hundred but if that’s what it takes to get a capacitor vs. a battery then welp I’d buy another G1W but the mount it came with never stuck to my windshield and the LiPo battery skeeves me out. Bought it from CalgaryDashCam which afaik no longer exists

Does anyone know what to do when you’re in an accident with the Aukey DR02? They have that hazard symbol that puts it in “emergency recording mode” but pressing it doesn’t seem to have an effect that I can tell. I bought one a while back but realized I don’t know how to use it, really. I have it in loop record every 15 minutes mode, but I have a 32gb card. There doesn’t seem to be a “record continuously” option in the menu.

Aukey sounds like a “who?” name but they’re pretty popular and mine has been running fine for a couple years now. I have a DR02 iirc. It’s 1080p and hardwire-able. I believe they have rear cams as well. I’d be interested to hear if the big name ones are any good as well.

I think 70mai cams are becoming pretty popular but I haven’t used one myself. A Sony CCD is nice, 4K is nice, a 3” LCD is nice. “Super night vision” sounds good but try to find a review online that shows you footage. Everything else, you don’t really need.
