I cleared my desk/workbench off Wednesday and found my Cobra 840 dashcam that locked up and quit working 45 minutes after I took it out of the box... which has apparently been plugged into a USB charger this entire time and was merrily recording the back of my computer monitors in a constant loop since last fall. It works again so maybe I'll have some content for this thread soon, we shall see.

I have a G1W that stopped working after a few months of daily driving in my Forester. I also have a Cobra 840 that worked great for 45 minutes and then quit on me. After sitting on my desk on a charger for several months it decided to start working again and I found I had hours worth of recordings of my desk. Nothing else I've ever plugged into the cig lighter outlet in that car has died, so I'm pretty sure dashcams just suck and I don't trust them to be running and recording when I need them to.

That's actually really cool that it does rear camera as well for that price, I might get one. That being said, getting shocked when getting out of the car is all about the interior and door design and materials used, not the grounding strap, it's because your foot movements on the carpet and rear end/back movements on the seat getting out of the car are causing static electricity buildup on your body which is then discharged when you touch a metal portion of the door. You can't blame that on a ground strap under the hood, unfortunately, but if you keep a hand on the door frame or door latch catch post while getting out, it should stop happening. The whine may be a ground strap issue, but is usually an alternator with one or more shorted rectifiers in the rectifier pack or a poor ground somewhere in the ignition system.

I can't find the SC version, only the GC, and google shows a few places where I could buy something that is allegedly it. Which should I buy?

DethMarine21 posted:I think that was a typo; SG9665GC is the actual model. There's an older version which I have and a new v2 version which you can get on Amazon or eBay. The manufacturer also mentioned on DashcamTalk that a v3 version is coming out in a few months which sounds like it will cost slightly more but will include a CPL filter. Wow, you guys weren't kidding about the price being higher, but given the fact that the cheap lovely ones always silently die on me at unpredictable times when the whole point is to reliably record all the time every time I think I'll spring for it next time I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket. Thanks, added to cart.

So far so good on the A118C but we shall see if I can break it like I did the Cobra 840 and G1W that came before it. Last night and this morning were remarkably smooth, only a few stupid things witnessed: I'm rolling along in the middle lane of i90, slowly catching up on a car. There is a semi truck in the right lane. The semi abruptly brakes and cuts me off, for no reason (right lane was visibly empty) and starts semitruck-tailgating the person I was catching up on. I avoided a collision, blipped the horn as I went by the truck, and he laid on the horn and flicked his high beams at me repeatedly in response. gently caress you too, apparently BBX hires lovely drivers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDRDTzBgnDg The guy in front of me moves right to undertake the black BMW and carbon VW faffing about in the left lane. Then I do. He fails to accelerate to pass, and just then the VW decides to get out of the way of the BMW (who doesn't react at all, still hogging the left lane) cutting off the guy who was in front of me. As a result, we got to stare at the back of their cars for several more miles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkS-z20kdW0 Then this genius slammed on the brakes right at the last minute while already in the exit-only lane (you don't get there by accident in this case) and then jumped out at the last second. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQh3fTY5Ut0 I also learned that with the A118C on "medium" G-sensor triggering, scraping ice off my windshield will most certainly trigger it. There was a great video of me scraping my windshield in the read-only folder

My wife's Cobra 840 (iirc) completely kills all FM band reception in her car when turned on. We need to put some ferrite beads on it eventually because it's really annoying.

WCRB? I listen to them a lot of days... Apparently they transmit at 27kW ERP, while the related station WGBH is at 98kW ERP. I can't think of any other stations to look up, but I think ~100kW is pretty normal for FM broadcast. e: wow no I'm wrong, 100kW is pretty high around here. Most stations seem to be in the sub 30kW range. Antenna height and surrounding geography also play a huge part, but that's neither here nor there for this thread. kastein fucked around with this message at 20:35 on Feb 1, 2017 |

So far so good with my A118-C. Haven't checked the rear one's card yet, but I double check that the screen is at least showing realtime video every time I start the car. Enjoy, the dumbasses I shared the road with over the last few weeks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTkHJQSfbFs (still uploading, may not work for a few minutes)

I ain't waiting around on a mostly empty street with no peds present for some inconsiderate dickheads to finish their middle of the road chat Seriously, I have no idea why people feel they should do that when roads are for driving on and there are people waiting behind them. I see it every couple of weeks, usually where there is no way around. Beeping the horn gets some glaring and they clearly think it's not their fault.

My g1w failed in a matter of months and I never trusted it enough to use it as a dashcam again. The whole reason I got it was my driving record was a horror show of inspection tickets and I needed video proof that anything that happened wasn't my fault, a camera that randomly decides to freeze or just not record didn't inspire much confidence.

What's the current recommendation for dashcams? I'm on A118-Cs of the finest 2015-2017 vintage still and they have now hosed me multiple times by either just going out to lunch and not recording, corrupting the SD cards, and/or straight up dying. Looking for something a little more reliable, but not looking to spend a zillion dollars. So far it hasn't cost me anything except memories, none of the stuff they have failed to catch was needed as evidence it was just supposed to be part of timelapses of trips and nonsense like that. But it sure isn't making me trust these things at all. If it's been posted recently, I'm perfectly fine with a thread page number/url/whatever reference, I'm just like two thousand pages behind on this megathread and definitely not digging that far myself.
