This was my first guitar, got it when I was 15, I think it cost $400 or so. I still have it, and it's as butt ugly as the day I got it. No that's not my picture, I don't pose my old guitar on navajo rugs for intimate photo sessions.

Declan MacManus posted:Electra, Vantage, Aria Pro II, Maxx, Cutler, Cortley, Aims, Memphis, Westone, Lotus, and Arai (among others) tend to make quality stuff. You can also look into the 80's Squiers (MIJ) along with Greco, Orville, and Burny for stuff that hasn't had its price bloated by guitar collectors. The problem is that while these are good deals, a lot of people selling them don't or didn't know what they had so they may be in need of a setup, but that's true of any vintage gear. I might be in the market for a cheap guitar to play chords and distortion. For something halfway decent and as cheap as possible (under $300), would I, as an uninformed, out of practice fool be better off going with an Agile, or taking more time and going through that list of brands? My Gibson V2 would be worth more to an ugly guitar aficionado than it is to me sitting here collecting dust.

Thanks to this dumb thread I think I'm going to buy a guitar and I haven't even played in ten years. Even though I don't like Dinosaur Jr I think the J Mascis Squier is going to be the one with that cream and gold I'm sure it belongs in here

I just wasn't into that whole era of jangly college middle of the road alt rock I'm actually listening to their early stuff now because I feel like I should at least have a little familiarity with the guys music if I get his guitar. It's sounding like it doesn't age especially well, kinda like a lot of Sub Pop. at the time I was more into Melvinsy stuff or whatever other noise/metal/drone was around. To each his or her own, as they say.

On ebay the Mascis is about $60 more. The differences that sound good to me are the tremolo closer to the bridge, satin instead of gloss on the neck, jumbo frets, and p90 style pickups. And something about hole spacing on the pickguard is compatible with more replacements. On either one it seems like a good idea to get a roller bridge. Maybe I'll just save the $60.

Declan MacManus posted:A Les Paul is a classic design made with the golden ratio in mind Thanks for mentioning that, it led me to this great post, "The Occult (Hidden) Origins of the Gibson Les Paul Guitar" http://www.lespaulforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=186448 There's plenty of gems like: "Gibson is a phonetic anagram for "big sun" a.k.a. "sunburst". The word "Gibson" is a tip-off that the company is run by Freemasons, a solar cult obsessed with all things Egyptian." "The Egyptian Trinity consists of Osiris, Isis, and Horus. Gibson repackaged the same trinity for the "delinquents" of the new world order, selling religion to the Godless masses. Gibson established the Trinity with three LP models, the '52 Goldtop, the '53 Custom, and the '54 Les Paul Junior." "The Les Paul guitar is bound in muslin strips during the binding process in the same manner that Isis used on the first mummy of Osiris. The Egyptian mummy is also associated with the first use of animal glue." "Holly wood is the whitest of all woods and has been used to make piano keys. Why use a holly wood veneer on the headstock if you're just going to paint it black? The Les Paul is a magic wand for space age "Electric Magic" "Osiris had the big hat with the Uraeus snake emerging from his third eye chakra, and was killed by Set.Personified by Gibson endorsers like Slash, with his big top hat with daisy (sun symbol) buckles, and he is associated with Slash's Snake Pit. His stories of his overdose (death) and rehab (resurection) are typical of so many Rock Gods, and resonate the story of Osiris. Slash plus Betty "virginal" White=Osiris and Isis"
