Tried this game out, didn't really care for it (or, rather, I didn't care to learn another game like Dwarf Fortress when I could, instead, just play Dwarf Fortress) but Ideology made me curious enough to give it another go and I've barely played anything else for the past couple of days. It is quite fun, and after a couple of quick restarts because I realized I didn't have good skills or whatever I finally got a decent colony going. Then my skill 7 cook gave everyone food poisoning right as a raid attacked, leaving most of my colony injured and bedridden. Then one of the two remaining healthy people had a mental break and wandered around in a daze. Then a bear decided to eat him. I sent my other colonist who was able to walk to try and kill the bear first, but the bear managed to kill him before he could get there, but not until he already fired a shot and hit the bear, causing the bear to revenge and kill the other guy.

I probably still could have recovered if I just waited for my other 3 colonists to heal, but eh, I wanted to try out a fluid ideology. Started with Body Purism, and I wanted to roleplay a bit, so I also made me have to treat human bodies with the upmost respect (hate seeing dead corpses, need to bury everyone, cannibalism is reprehensible, etc.) So naturally I did a smart thing and switched out the pirates and savage tribe with the cannibal versions, meaning half my prisoners want human flesh anyway. An annoying mood drop to deal with.

Oh well game is fun.

Annoying. When I reformed my ideology, my medical specialist role got reset and I had to remake it.

Got kind of bored of the old colony, decided to try out some mods, a new ideology, and a new biome. I heard that temperate swamps have a lot of rich soil for plants, so I made a Nature Primacy ideology that is vegetarian and disapproves of cutting down plants.

This was, perhaps, not the biome to choose if my pawns lose 5 mood every time they cut down a tree.

Hellioning

I was having trouble in my 'trees are people too' colony. I was running out of wood for my fueled stove because I didn't want to use wind turbines for power. Then a dry thunderstorm happened and burnt down half the forest.

Good news, as I learned, that ideologies that don't want you to cut down trees don't care if you cut down dead, burnt out trees. Sure you don't get much, but it's better than nothing!

I have told myself I will not add more mods until after I get used to the vanilla expanded series but I really want a giant bee now.

An alcoholic guest arrived with his own fancy cocktails. I haven't really got digging into VE brewing yet, just installed it. I was too busy building weapons and armor and harassing the mech cluster that arrived next to notice he'd passed out in the dining room. Then it started hailing. After I dealt with one scyther and got my sniper into critical care did I notice him and get him off the floor. Well, after a passing trader pissed off the rest of the mechs, which really worked well for me as a distraction, the guests decided to leave, and left this guy behind. He eventually starts moving but so drat slow and getting pelted with hail - he's suffering withdrawal while carrying 3 Pan-galactic gargleblasters but has a 200+ hour medical status of having drunk one already and won't drink another. He almost made it off the map when a pirate raid came from all angles and just beat him to death. He's the only grave I have in this colony so far.

Yeah, the weirdest thing I had happen with mods is an alcoholic pawn crashing into the colony with her own cocktails. I rescued and recruited her, and, as expected, she immediately went to the cocktails that I was keeping from her beforehand. She drank one and immediately went into the hammered state and nearly passed out, and had to be rescued and brought back to bed.

I thought it was because she was a modded rat person and maybe they're just bad with alcohol with something but I guess that's just how cocktails work?

It's related to body size; smaller pawns (with a body size inferior to 1) can't consume as much drugs as regular and bigger pawns. I had a colony where all my rat peoples got cirrhosis and needed synthetic livers to party as hard as the humans.

cocktails specifically get you drunker the better they are, for some reason. gourmet ones will get your colonists hammered right off the bat, and god forbid if a dog gets hold of one

Depends on how close wherever you're going is. There is a nonzero chance you will be attacked, and if it's just one dude, that one dude had better be a combat god.

It's enough to forgive her being a pyromaniac.

And of course the instant I unpause after making this post another raid shows up with 6/7 of my colonists in hospital beds. Of course.

And so another colony ends. Not with a bang, but with a whimper of my wooden barn catching on fire from an unfortunate Bzzt and all of my colonists, including the injured ones, rushing into the 1000+ degree barn to try and put the fire out.

I had just realized that I forgot to set my ideology to fluid, too, so that was convenient timing.

First thing I do every new game since Ideology dropped is open dev mode and fix all the things I forgot about my ideoligeon and go through all the others to make them more sensible.

Yeah, makes sense. I learned that you can use a saved ideoligion as a fluid one, but you can't do it through the 'load saved ideology' bit in the first ideologion screen. You have to go through the 'fluid ideologion' menus until you get the option to customize precepts, and then you can load it in as a fluid one. Was quite annoying.

Ideology is great because I can set my Ideology to make my colonists sad if I do bad guy things and happy if I do good guy things so I have an in game reason not to do bad things and to do good things so I don't have to say that i feel sorry for the fake people in the video game.

Interesting choice to include a mechanic based entirely around people who are willing to spend the rest of their lives fighting and doing nothing else in something that's supposed to be about pirates, of all things. Not exactly the extreme dedicated soldiers you would think of.

Rim magic (and an expansion mod) adds a bunch of classes to the game that are like DnD classes with different abilities. It makes combat more engaging and is a good way to be able to play without having to rely on killboxes.

Ideology is great because it lets me make a nice person ideology and justify me taking in all the charity cases and giving medicine to beggars with 'see my ideology says I have to or else I get mood debuffs' instead of the real reason, which is 'being mean to fake people makes me sad'.

Hah, whoops. I got a 'random wanderer joins' event, and because I had alpha animals, I suspected a mimic, especially after I noticed how quickly her hunger was going down. So I limited her to a prison cell, had my small military wait outside the door, and...nothing. She was starving and was at minor malnourishment when I gave up.

Then I noticed she had the Gourmand trait and that was why her hunger was dropping. Whoops.
