Hey neat there's a thread for this.

I've been playing this for months and it's one of my favourites. I get the sense that there is a ton of potential and the mod-friendly patch was such a good idea - their mod subforum is full of good poo poo. I installed most of them but the turret mods (I've removed turrets altogether from my game).

A thought I like to promote with this game:

Playing the combat part aggressively instead of using killzones and funnels tower-defence style reveals a bit of depth to the combat mechanics. There`s a bit of a realtime mini-jagged alliance hidden away that I hope some modder is going to flesh out in the future. You can get a good sense of this by building individual buildings outside to give yourself a little urban area full of alleys and corners and town squares and multiple paths through your colony like a little town. When the AI assaults you'll have all kinds of cover and flanking routes! The AI doesn't quite know how to use this to its advantage just yet (if you find yourself flanked it's only because that AI was on its way to some other static target when it saw one of your troops) but it's still fun to play with your toy soldiers.

Pornographic Memory posted:

It is pretty cool, and yes I definitely get a Jagged Alliance vibe when I don't just hunker into kill zones, but when you've got a dozen or more people fighting it gets really hard to manage constantly moving them in a real time with pause system. Kill zones are boring, but at least you can just send a horde of people to hunker down in some cover and let them do their thing, only needing to intervene to pull back wounded or overly exposed folks.

It's a good point and one that's always used in reply to my statement but to me I play this game for the very purpose of micromanaging the hell out of everything including 20 vs 20 battles. I spend the majority of my time in 1x or pause mode.

I feel like I would have been a perfect candidate for Dwarf Fortress if it had, you know, graphics.

Ironically DF is very poor on the real time micromanagement side, all your micromanagement happens months or years in advance, if you screw up in combat, it's because you didn't do something a year ago.

That's loving hilarious. Also surprising to hear considering how popular it is, normally gamers boil over with rage at the sierra adventures game over effect.

Your idea about group banding spawns is fantastic. Go post it on Ludeon's forums stat!

I think a simple battery hardening mod would be an elegant fix to solar flares. Batteries already lose their general use after your first geothermal (or wind if you've got the energy+ mod), this would keep them relevant and planning 24 hours of power usage into your base design keeps things interesting.

dll modding is the best thing he did for this game. I can't wait to see how expansive some of these mods get. They're already pretty awesome!

I'm also curious what DLL modding will do for the game

He had to do a lot of work to open up the game for modding but a lot of variables for moddable things were still locked away and would have required an absurd amount of work to manually open them up. For example, one mod right now adds medical beds that have increased healing rate, he wants to make them powered for balance but in Alpha 2 he couldn't change the accelerated healing state so even if the bed was unpowered you'd receive the full benefits.

Tiny things that will add up to a big difference.

Industrial is my favourite. I also loved the clutter mods too. There's one guy who coded in a bunch of really fantastic quality-of-life improvements like saving combat formations. It sounded like those were going to be folded into the base game but for now that mod is the one to get.

I haven't played in a few weeks but the few active modders there are REALLY active so I'm bound to be swamped by how much new content there is in all my favourite mods.

I wonder how these changes are balanced in regard to the availability of medical supplies, and the size/nature of attacks. In alpha 5 I don't think I had a single combat encounter where most of my forces didn't end up badly battered about, and aside from purchasing them from the combat supplier you have to get pretty lucky with a drop to get band-aids.

Mod that poo poo yourself if you don't like it. The game is so open it makes grandmothers blush and this is in alpha, balance isn't at the front of his mind.

gently caress all that poo poo. Ignore these guys. Go find mods and download to your heart's content even if its your first play.

The fun of this game IS discovering and learning and mods only add more to that. The journey is the road, not the destination and Rimworld's destination is a heavily minmaxed mountain fortress with a tower defense style killzone maze powered by geothermals staffed with cooks and snipers.

What's a good way to avoid that in the future?

I've been holing up in my town and waiting for tribals to get into the alleyway system so that I can flank them and rush them for hand to hand combat. I get better results than trying to deal with them in a firefight.

New idea for anyone that wants to play around with it: Keep and tend to a Zoo.

Build a bunch of fenced areas either large enough to support one animal living off grass or with a small farm plot that a worker can tend to.

I love making towns in the open so I usually don't have piles of local metal to work with but buying it from passing traders has never been an issue. Just make sure you have enough float to buy up enough metal to last you until the next trader passes by because they sometimes dont' come as often as you like.

It's necessary if you're the type that doesn't scum out a cook and rolls with whatever you're given at character selection.

Or your cook dies.

It's also handy in the middle of a siege when your cook with 9 shooting is off handling business.

There's a big discussion about combat and raids on the ludeon forums and the flavour in favour seems to lead the game into more of a dwarf fortress style hands-off experience where people don't have to micromanage pawns in combat.

That makes me really sad. I want more microing options.
