Kevin Smith is a boring and complacent director. Chasing Amy still holds up while Clerks' dialogue gets more unbearably amateur the older you get, but both of those movies had a great deal of promise. But he never became a better writer and he never became a better filmmaker. Look at someone like Richard Linklater who started off with similar gen X naval gazing films and did his share of lame mercenary pics. Still, even his worst movie, Fast Food Nation, is still an interesting movie. And it seems unfair now to compare someone who directed what was probably 2013's best picture to Smith, but I think Smith could have become a better director if he tried new things and was a bit more critical of himself. I think that's the great tragedy. There is still this kernel of great talent in Smith that has died off to his laziness.

It's kind of weird to assume when you're 41 in 2012 to assume that you literally have less years ahead of you then you do behind. I mean breaking even at 82 isn't a strange thing now, Kevin. As much as I dislike the guy, he really should take care of himself.

Eh, guys the big Catholic explanation for him is kinda silly and a little offensive. Ebert was raised Catholic and it's not really a stereotype that holds that true.

If you don't think growing up fat and being raised Catholic contributes to this kind of self-worth problem, I don't know what to tell you.
I'm saying I grew up fat and Catholic and a so do a lot of people without suffering from those issues in any meaningful way. The sum of a religion doesn't equal its parts, and you guys are playing armchair psychologist with a pretty one dimensional view of a lot of people.

I think it's more an issue of basically being a kid when he broke out and having both a tight circle of people who are probably really fun to make movies with and a big cult following which insulated him from a lot of the growth filmmakers usually go through.

Not that it was high art, or anything, but it very much doesn't sound or feel like his other stuff, and it was the last film he made.
The quality of Red State aside, it was caught up in a lot of bullshit like planning to auction it off after a screening in Cannes, canceling the auction, "Indie Film 2.0," serious evidence that he expected an Oscar for at least something in the movie, claiming that his ability to self-distribute a movie was an ability anyone had, and the worst most loving pretentious and awful tagline on a movie poster, "An unlikely film from That Keven Smith."

I can't believe people are calling Clerks a classic. I guess the demographic on a website like this skew towards losers born between 1976 and 1980 but literally no one else in the world gives a single poo poo about kevin smith.
I was in high-school in the oughties and while his later work was pretty decisive, Clerks and Chasing Amy were pretty celebrated. I don't think Clerks is a good movie, but gently caress son, Reel Big Fish also ain't a great band. But both sure were fun for me in 2002. No reason to call people losers over things that are fun when they're young.

I think Clerks is going to continue to be a staple for young film nerds for awhile.

The big fear I have with him going to Kickstarter is that he'll become overfunded and adhere to a bunch of dumb stretch goals.

Not only that, but the characters never evolved from the first movie. Why is this movie set 10 years after Clerks, why not 2, or 5? The characters just teleported from Clerks to Clerks 2. This makes sense since SMith seems to have not really mattured himself since his 20's.

I also question why there needs to be a romantic plot in Clerks 2, other than there is one in Clerks.
Well, to be fair, that's the point of the movie. It's about these guys who didn't realize they weren't growing up and woke up their thirties one day. I do think the film asks some valid and interesting questions about the nature of growing comfortable with your life and what that means.

At the very least, Randall's line about being too old to make new friends really hits home as you get older.

I think of him as the previous Lena Dunham. Artist getting screwed by their own popularity is a cliche but it's apt.
CineD: Everyone is Lena Dunham.

But really, she's done like two things. I think it's unfair to compare her to a dude who's had twenty years in film.

Zach and Miri is a parallel universe where Kevin Smith murders Judd Apatow and starts wearing his face as a mask. But nobody is convinced. We're all just like, "Kevin, that's clearly you, with Judd Apatow's face strapped to your own."

I think part of growing up is realizing that a lot of the people you don't like for nerdy reasons can still be great people. Smith has done nothing to give off the impression that he is anything less than a great friend. Just like George Lucas is a wonderfully kickass person who will open cool museums, pour money into education, and sell property to be used as public housing just to piss of fellow rich people.
