For anyone who hasn't seen it or know about it, check out the movie Beyond the Black Rainbow. The story with this movie, as I understand it, is the director grew up in the 1980's and was in video stores a lot, but was not allowed to rent or watch any R-rated horror or sci-fi movies. But he was infatuated with the box art. Since he couldn't watch any of the movies until he was older, he often imagined what the movies were like based on the artwork.
