Logo by Quidnose. --- PARTICIPANTS --- No fancy visual spreadsheet this year, I'm afraid. The rules are still the same though. Post in this thread when you beat a game, using bold letters so I don't miss it. I'll try to update it as soon as possible. List of participants! --- ABOUT --- Revol has been known for making these yearly marathon threads, but it seems he lost interest halfway through his second -Mario- marathon. I've took it upon myself to give it a try, because it was always fun to participate. It seems people wanted to play Kirby, so Kirby it is! Remember, this is not a Let's Play. You are not watching me play through these games. We all are doing this. We play the games, and you report in to get marked on the spreadsheet, so everyone can see each others' progress. There will be challenges for each game. There are more Kirby games out there, but they all have a weird gimmick that's not being a platformer (golf game, tetris clones, pinball etc.). I left most of these out because there would be just too much games to play. I did leave in Kirby's Air Ride, because I wanted to add at least something else than the usual Kirby experience and it's also the only GameCube game in the list. If people finish these games at an alarmingly fast pace, we can always decide to add more Kirby games. You're free to play and post about them either way! --- GAMES --- Standard challenges: - Beat the game Harder challenges: - No deaths - No power-ups (unless required) - Pacifist (don't hurt enemies unless required) If you have an idea for a challenge, speak up! 1992 - Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy) Special challenge: - Finish extra mode (Explanation) (Example) - Finish the game with just one HP (Explanation) (Example) 1993 - Kirby's Adventure (NES)/2002 - Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land (GBA) Special challenge: - Beat the game with 100% (Explanation) - Finish extra mode (Explanation) - Finish with the infinite mic glitch (Explanation) 1995 - Kirby's Dream Land 2 (Game Boy) Special challenge: - Collect all Rainbow Drops (Explanation) - Beat the game with 100% (Explanation) 1996 - Kirby Super Star (SNES)/2008 - Kirby Super Star Ultra (NDS) Regular challenge: - Finish all sub-modes Special challenge: - Get all treasures in Great Cave Offensive - Get all copy abilities in Milky Way Wishes - Do a no-hit run of the superstar arenas 1997 - Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES) 2000 - Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64) Special challenge: - All shards + secret boss 2003 - Kirby Air Ride (GameCube) Regular challenge: - Select a game mode and earn at least 100 out of 120 challenges (find the "records" menu to see your progress) Special challenge: - Get these unlocks for all three modes (so 300/360) - Complete all challenges 2004 - Kirby & The Amazing Mirror (GBA) 2005 - Kirby: Canvas Curse (NDS) 2006 - Kirby: Squeak Squad (NDS) Special challenge: - Finish extra mode (Explanation) 2010 - Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii) 2011 - Kirby Mass Attack (NDS) Special challenge: - Collect all the medals - Get a Gold Star on every level (aka beat every level without getting hit) 2011 - Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Wii) Special challenge: - Get all Energy Spheres - Finish extra mode (Explanation) 2014 - Kirby Triple Deluxe (3DS) --- RULES --- * This thread is based upon one made by Revol. Credits where due. * This is run by the honor system. We hope that you don't lie. If you cheat, you should own up to it. * There is no restriction to what version of a game you can play. Emulators are allowed. You can play Kirby's Adventure on your Wii and Kirby 64 on your PC. Go wild. Just don't ask where to find roms. Talking about emulators should be fine. * Save states are allowed, but only in moderation. You cannot abuse save states to make the game easier. They should only be used at the end of your play session to save your place when you come back to the game. If you use save states beyond that, you should consider it cheating. * You do not have to play the games in the order presented here. The idea behind all this is to do so, but this is not an enforced rule. You can complete these games in whatever order you choose. * You can earn multiple challenges on one game, and you can be awarded for them, within reason. I want to keep it to two challenges, though. * If you started playing a game over six months ago, you must start over. * There is no time limit you have to beat the games by. Participation does not end at the end of the year. Grawl fucked around with this message at 17:46 on Feb 24, 2014 |

Well, it seems the first Kirby game wasn't hard, took me 40 minutes and I died twice.

DarkHamsterlord posted:DarkHamsterlord has completed Kirby's Dreamland on Extra Mode! Dedede is kind of a pain in the rear end on Extra. Nice, I added that to the OP and updated the spreadsheet. We might get a graphical version after all, but I'll get back to that.

PirateNipple posted:I'm In! See the OP. It'd include too many games. Perhaps if people finish them really fast. Cannot Find Server posted:Are we allowed to participate if we don't have any way to play some of the games? I've only ever played Epic Yarn, Superstar and Canvas Curse, so this would be a good way to finally get most of the rest of the series out of my backlog. Sure! alf_pogs posted:I've finished the normal ending of Kirby's Dreamland 2, but there's things to collect in each world that unlock the secret final boss so I'm doing that now too. Should that be a separate challenge? Yes, could you specificity on how I should word it? Spreadsheet also updated. Finished Kirby's Adventure myself, and it had some pretty challenging moments. Will go for 100% tomorrow.

Time for that 100%. Game was pretty easy, especially the last world. But gently caress Mr. Bright & Mr. Shine.

Spreadsheet updated. I started Kirby's Super Star, and it just seems to be a bunch of very short games. I guess the goal is to just beat those?

DoYouHasaRabbit posted:Why is Kirby's Tilt n' Tumble not on this list? Because there are a lot of games on the list already. If people go through these games very fast, I might add more Kirby games. This is all covered in the OP.

g0lbez posted:Can getting the infinite mic glitch in Kirby's Adventure and holding on to it throughout the entire game count as a challenge? Although I'm not sure if you can keep it past Metaknight unless there's another glitch I'm unaware of. If you elaborate a bit more on that, sure.

g0lbez posted:Basically if you finish off the second world boss with the last of your Mic power while positioned perfectly over where the star rod appears the game glitches out and gives you practically infinite uses of the Mic. Alright, I'll add it to the OP.

BreakTargets posted:BreakTargets has beaten Kirby 64 without getting a single non-mandatory ability even though there aren't any parts of that game that force you to use an ability. I much rather you create a separate post, rather than editing a 4 day old post, because I almost missed your edit. I spoke with Zoolooman about it (moderator) and he's ok with double posting as long as it's not back to back.

Alright, a new year is coming and it seems people lost interest in Kirby -- myself included. Does anyone have a good idea for the 2015 challenge? Megaman, Sonic, Dragon Quest, Metroid, Castlevania, Resident Evil etc. etc.? Or perhaps "an introduction to games", and just play the first game of certain series?

Looper posted:Omg I forgot about this I think playing the first game in a variety of famous series would be cool, and hopefully prevent burnout This is exactly what I'm thinking. It'll prevent burnout and people will get to try something new when they feel the need. There seems to be a huge demand for Megaman, but people will probably finish a few and never look back. How about this for 2015 instead? It can be the retro year, whatever. So the first in these series: - Sonic (Genesis) - Megaman (NES) - Dragon Quest (NES) - Final Fantasy (NES) - Castlevania (NES) - Metroid (NES) There's always the option to expand if needed. Quidnose posted:Maybe throw Mario, Kirby, and Zelda in for newbies / those of us who missed the earlier marathons? Not a bad idea. Easy(ish), short games. AHungryRobot posted:The problem with a first-in-the-series thing is that for some of those series the first entry is widely accepted to be one of the weaker entries. MM1, Metroid 1 and Sonic 1 are all solid titles by themselves but lack a lot of the refinements that make the sequels great. Personally, I feel like all a marathon like that would do is make me wish I was playing one of the sequels. A smorgasbord style marathon like that could be good but I don't think that'd be the best way to do it. Pixeltendo posted:Personally if we had to do a series wide thing, I'd go with the best of from each franchise. That's what 2016 is for then. The Silver Snail posted:Megaman 2 is not the best mega man. For this reason as well. Let people "taste" the games. I don't think many played the very first games in the series a whole lot. Sure, I played Mario and Sonic when I was a kid, but I can't remember finishing it all the way anymore. 13/f/cali posted:I agree with this. Maybe there could be some kind of compromise where you pick a franchise (I'd vote Mega Man) for a typical marathon thread and then in addition as a side thing there could be the "classics sampler" challenge or something where you pick a short list of firsts in other franchises and people could pick at that for variety if they start to feel burnt out on the main series. I'm fine with multiple marathons, but I'm not "hosting" both. Grawl fucked around with this message at 02:08 on Dec 20, 2014 |
