I'm only an occasional Ron and Fez listener, so can somebody explain to me why on Earth Fez considers Ron a true friend? I love Ron, but on air he's always seemed hostile towards Fez, exploits him for jokes, constantly leaves him hanging, and generally teases him. He gets away with far more than anyone else in the room when it comes to abusing Fez. So why does Fezzy still think he's some sort of magical protector best friend? The two possible answers I have are: 1. Fez is crazy, 2. It's a work.

Lovin' the Lady Di internship. Although I got frustrated with the gang during the Game of Thrones actor interview - they were all asking him about spoilers and whether he knows certain things, or how things are kept from being leaked from the set. If only there were a series of long-form transcriptions of the script that had been in circulation for the past two decades.

Listening to the porn girl interview now, it's about what I would have expected. I think the fellers made a mistake not introducing the "handler" at all - once you know she is a comedy podcaster herself, it makes thing a lot more comfortable to listen to. As it was, her voice just appeared out of nowhere and she isn't even named until 10 minutes in. Sure the interview goes on for far, far too long, but I don't know what else this 19 year-old idiot* could have brought to the table besides porn stories. I think a lot of the lovely reddit reaction is just young men conditioned to enter emergency shutdown once the p- word is ever mentioned. Privilege, not penis, I mean.

Listening to the Greg Gutfeld interview at the moment. What is it about conservative humour that is always so deeply unfunny? It just always comes across as so brazenly and proudly hateful. A lot of what Greg (and Ant when he gets on a tear) says seems to boil down to "I think I would know if I was being racist / homophobic / a jerk". There's some sort of weird defensiveness when it comes to admitting your own ignorance.

As a newish listener to the show, I love Fez. Not as a co-host though - I love him in the same way that I loved Lady Di when she did that O&A internship. I can't get enough of him freaking out, making minor mistakes that Ron pounces on, panic live reading in silences, and being a general weirdo. Judging by this thread, though, I expect this affection to take a nose dive some time very soon.

I think the fact that the segment was a steaming hunk of poo poo until CQ called in indicates the main problem the show has with discussing social issues: they grind the comedy train to a screeching halt. I don't mind these topics being discussed, but for the love of god throw in a joke or two while you're at it. The guys don't have a rounded understanding of the issues they're discussing and seem to enjoy relentlessly echoing their ignorance back and forth. If that's the case, then at least make it funny. Any time the other side has a say, it's usually in a news clip or a caller Ant can quickly shout over. Patrice was the greatest guy to be in studio for these discussions because, although he wasn't a professor on the issues either, he did have an alternate experience he could draw from and he was always hilarious.

I think the show could have been saved by making everyone do a stand up act instead of different (mostly visual) "talents". Not only would it be funny to see these weirdos try to act like comedians, but I get the feeling that someone like Sandy Kane would actually have a pretty genuinely funny act.

I agree about Norton's stand up. His act (in the specials at least, I've never seen him live) seems way too over-polished, and I can't stand his constant mugging to the audience. I can't remember which comedian it was, but someone once explained about the need for comedians to stay "within the energy of the bit". So if you're acting outraged and mad, don't break the illusion by grinning after you get a laugh. Norton never does this and it annoys the poo poo out of me.

ozza
Oct 23, 2008

The problem with Lady Di is you never know when you're going to strike gold, so the guys sometimes keep the conversation going far longer than necessary without anything funny happening. On the other hand, it's thanks to those conversations that we do get stuff like the heroin confession and the time the guys went silent and left her to her own devices (and Bill arguments). That squirrel attack while she was chugging on a Natty Ice was ridiculously hilarious.

But honestly I think he more or less treats Shelby pretty much how he treats Pepper, and both are great at rolling with the punches and don't take it personally. Fez is the guy who actually gets treated like poo poo - he can't really add anything at this point without being met with dead silence.

I like Molly too, she's a good straight man and does a good job jumping into topics and keeping the conversations moving.

During the shows from when Fez was recently in hospital, Ron was really a jerk to Shelby. He treated him like a Fez substitute, and not in a funny way - he would ignore Shelbo's comments and undermine his jokes. It was really mean. Although he still does that to Shelby since Fez came back, he's now more obviously just busting balls.

Opie has the wit of a canned yam, but it's true that when he's not around the show doesn't really go anywhere. He's best at guiding the whole show along and taking in calls and he needs to focus on doing and performing more funny poo poo like when he smashed Sandy Kane's guitar. I recall someone called in at one point bashing Opie and Ant explained his role pretty well by comparing him to the rudder on a boat.

I can handle him bringing in crappy callers because usually he's just throwing more fuel to the fire for Ant and Jim to bash the caller on. If there's one thing I dislike about Opie it's how he's so fixated on break. It seems like half the time he opens his mouth he's talking about stuff before break or after break or during break or break break break break break.

Also "young son" / "young family".

To poo poo briefly on another member of the staff, I had a good laff when Jimmy asked Erock if he ever felt in danger being in Italy. The prospect of an Opie and Ron show makes no sense to me. Ron brings out the best in pretty much everyone on the air, but Opie sucks and at best I think Ron could pull out a couple decent shows before the novelty wore off completely.

Yeah I think Ron absolutely has to own every room he's in, which leads to him relentlessly picking on his co-hosts, producers etc. If there's one thing I know about Opie, it's that he can't handle it when he becomes the butt of the joke. So a Ron + Opie combo would be doomed - they both would want to run the show, but Ronnie B always wins, and I don't think Opie has too much to offer aside from show running.
