So if I understood that segment right, the F-35 is basically the equivalent of paying thousands of people to dig holes and then refill the holes, only it also wastes a lot of resources we could use for other things?

With the additional caveat that you're not just wasting your own money, you're wasting ours too. Britain's paid for and been wanting these things in service since 2012, and now its expected they'll be ready by 2018, largely because the software on the craft still needs to rewritten up to standard, and full combat capability isn't expected by some until the middle of the next decade.

Unfortunately, many western militaries - UK and USA especially - are obsessed with possessing the most advanced and up to date technology, admittedly partly from many years of letting updates go by the wayside, but it can also result in gaps because they retire already functioning technology too early, whilst banking too much on stuff that isn't ready yet - its an admittedly similar issue with the aircraft carriers these fighters are meant to be serving on.

The thing with the Church and the treatment of scientists is that its ultimately rather convoluted, even after the points it wasn't hilariously corrupt (and that's even speaking as a Catholic). Some parts gave to the progression of science, others have tried to hold it back. Unfortunately, not everyone can be Georges Lemaître, and many of those who espouse themselves as Catholic (like old Papa Bear) don't seem to realise what the modern day Church's views on a lot of issues actually are. Not that one can't disagree with the Vatican, but if people are going to claim its part of their religion, they might want to be sure what that religion actually says.

But yes, Neil is awesome, and I hope his work helps to inspire others to better map out the universe and such as we step into the future. I wonder if he's ever met Brian Cox, because it feels like such an obvious meeting but I'm not sure that its ever come to pass.

I mean, I guess someone who spends their whole day on twitter is bound to be a self-aggrandizing publicity monger, and it definitely comes across she is more interested in defending herself than whatever cause she was trying to start here.

...If that is her logic, that partly seems like an inability to distinguish Colbert from his fanbase as well. Which, admittedly, can be a bit understandable - since by the base logic of it, to be a fan of something, it must appeal to you in some fashion. The inverse however, is not true, in that just because Colbert's fans may think or feel something, doesn't mean that Colbert himself does. And in this case, his original remark would be satire, whilst the more aggressive of his 'defenders' would likely get a stern talking to from the man himself if he found out about it.

Probably the thing that more irks me than anything else about this, and admittedly its a bit on a tangent from the actual subject matter itself, but how she claims that a 'white man' can't understand how a person of colour feels with regards to her issues. Because clearly, all minorities of a different skin colour must feel the same about racially satire based on a particular sub-culture and ethnicity within the very, very broad definition of 'asian'. And that anybody who has white skin couldn't possibly understand being made fun of by a stereotype that mocks the way they speak. Not as if there's a whole continent of them with differing cultural backgrounds and accents with a decent amount of immigration...

Certainly not enough that it could be tracked by satellites in orbit, which means the best way to pick them up is to have a boat in the water with the right equipment - this is why search planes are being used for spotting purposes, rather than detecting the signal, as the levels at which they fly reduces their effectiveness. Add in multiple search areas the size of entire countries, with the additional depth issues, and it really is a proverbial needle in a haystack situation. The Holy Grail was originally just a macguffin of Arthurian lore, which then expanded into being the vessel Jesus' blood was caught in when they punctured his sides, and then less literate members of the clergy and laymen heard two 'holy cups' and assumed they had to be same drat thing. Didn't help that actually translating the Bible for local readers to understand just wasn't done for a long time, so its not as if your average follower could actually check their references.

Now admittedly the concept of Church's teaching self defence classes isn't exactly new either - often you'll find them in more impoverished and/or dangerous parts of the world, where both the clergy and the laymen have to be able to defend themselves.

But there's the thing - defend themselves, using the fact churches tend to be good gathering spots with at least some space. Not act like it somehow promotes the faith.

For a little more context, the full quote that pastor used was Luke 6:26, and I quote:

"Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets."

Its part of a general set of stuff regarding how those who have present luxuries should realise that these won't last forever, especially if/when God decides to even the scales - its from the same part as the whole 'blessed are the poor' stuff. The thing about the bowing bit is that the Fox News guy explaining it is partly right, but fails to either realise or note (I wouldn't be surprised if it were a deliberate omission) that bowing as an apology tends to either be lengthy, frequent, or outright on the floor (the concept of dogeza, for the Japanese). If one simply bows deeply, its a sign of great respect, unless you deliberately hold it for longer than normal, in which case, you're pretty much waiting for acknowledgement of the apology you're likely giving.

What a lot of people forget that the reason its called a 'balanced diet' is that everything has to be in proper proportion, and even then, accounting for where you're starting from. Ie, if you're lacking iron in your blood, then even a balanced diet needs an increased focus on either red meat, or green products that contain it, like broccoli. Any food to a given extreme can be bad for you - fruit and vegetables are merely less likely to immediately meet that extreme, and offset an assumed default in which they are not present.

But yeah, Page is Pryde, reprising the role from X-Men Last Stand. Which is fair deuce, given how all over the place the timeline already is for the X-Men film franchise (true to its comic book counterpart) before even throwing in a 'history has to be altered!' monkey wrench.

...I will confess, that Daily Show interview got to me a bit. I may not be on the same part of the spectrum as Suskind's son, but a lot of the basic issues - communication, interests, etc - are still there in some form. At least Suskind and his wife are the kind of parents who will actually try to keep communicating and expand their son's horizons in spite of the challenges, rather than many parents who, much to my mother's disgust, try their best to just ignore it, hope schools will deal with it (and even worse, many won't), or blindly expect a cure. Hope his book does well and sets someone right.

On the whole Pope/Socialism thing, does noone at Fox news realise that socialism, and the 'communism' of the soviet states are very different things? John Paul II was against the latter because it actively oppressed people, like those in his homeland of Poland, whilst also dividing the world along sharp political lines and causing far more trouble than it was worth. If he had complaints against communism, I doubt - though if I am incorrect, fair enough - its economic ideas were a significant factor.

And then on the Nigeria thing... unfortunately, as the Sister says, its way more common than regularly gets reported on. I think this particular incident got brought up because of A) The scale of it, rather than individual incidents piling up, but instead several hundred schoolgirls at once and B) That the Nigerian government tried to deny that it was still an issue, instead claiming that most of the girls were already rescued - they really weren't of course, and this got people pissed off enough to protest. The BBC actually went on to explore the damages done that get ignored, discovering that towns like Gamburo can be leveled, but scarcely anyone, even domestically, ever reports on it.

The thing with the ice sheets melting is that its basically become a point of no return thing. See, part of what the poles matter is that the ice they have actually reflects sunlight away (being sheer white and all). But, if they've melted into sea water, then that water is capable of absorbing and retaining the heat, which in turn raises temperatures and further enables more ice to melt, rather than the water re-solidifying. Antarctica then has the caveat that, as an actual landmass simply buried under ice, rather than a huge chunk of ice simply covering a continent sized area, the water runs off and thus can't be back in place to freeze over the same area again.

Long story short, we really should have been paying attention.

And of course, for all the politicians talking about oh they'll let the next generation deal with it, I am arguably in that generation, so I say: Screw them for leaving the mess to us.
