And now they're back to games, having concluded a Kickstarter for Heavy Gear Blitz miniatures last year, except that I guess they decided they needed more money because they're soliciting funding on one of the even shadier crowdfunding sites.

Jovian Chronicles Second Edition RPG Player's Handbook

Chapter 7: Mechanical Catalog
Stormrider

This ridiculous fellow is based on a configuration (aka Mekton Command Armor) for the Prometheus prototype exo-armor. Still more or less a prototype itself, the Stormrider has nevertheless shown some promising results.
If the huge particle cannons and the massive thrusters are any indication, the Stormrider's main purpose is that of a fast assault unit. It also comes with a chest-mounted scatter launcher aka shotgun, a ton of missiles (though I'm pretty sure that puny Damage Multiplier of 10 is an error; they typically have 16-30), and a point-defense laser system.
Overall, it doesn't really hit harder than the Vindicator, but it does so faster. Though I was honestly expecting more oomph from those oversized guns (they actually just have improved range over the saner models).

Fury

Taking a cue from the Dragonstriker prototype, this exo-armor is a straight upgrade of the Syreen. It comes with a more advanced laser system geared more towards missile defense than autonomous firing. The shoulders come with 8 hardpoints, making the design very flexible.

Since the standard Fury has lots of empty hardpoints, they fall into one of 3 variants, which are named after the three furies of Greek mythology:

  • Alecto, The Unceasing: The recon model, with better sensors and stuff and recon drones.
  • Megaera, The Grudging: The default model, comes with a shoulder-mounted sniper railgun and missiles for the shoulders.
  • Tsiphone, The Avenging: This one's used to take down ships. It has plenty of room for torpedoes, and it comes with two extra-powerful plasma lances that go through ship hulls like a hot knife through butter.
Sadly, you can't actually use the drones and torpedo bay without the "CHAOS" book.

I guess their artist was a fan of Stardust Memory. The Stormrider up there reminds me of the Dendrobium:

And the Fury resembles the Neue Ziel:

Funnily enough, Chaos Principle (the only Jovian Chronicles adventure published besides the old Mekton books they made) actually covers the whole Cold War gone hot angle, and shows exactly what happens when two mostly-planetbound powers with spacebound allies get into a real fight.

Christ, that adventure was poo poo.

Was Chaos Principle really the only one? Not doubting you - I remember seeing a fair number of Jovian Chronicle books in game stores but I guess most of them were faction books, then?

I should dig out my hardcopy of the book itself; I don't leaf through it much because the binding has long since disintegrated. I don't know if that's a fault of paperback supplements in general, but all my WEG paperbacks are like that.

Early WEG binding was fairly durable but the late 90s and beyond went downhill. My copy of the Death Star Technical Companion from 1991 is still going strong after over 20 years of occasional moderate use.

Once combat started, the best gun was the one currently in your hand.

This is true in real gunfights. Cops (non-SWAT) typically only have a sidearm, with maybe a long gun in the car. Soldiers typically carry a long gun and sidearm. It's not common for anyone who expects a gunfight to have an arsenal strapped to them; much more likely to have a primary, a backup, and a bunch of ammunition for both.

I'll bring this up before our next editing pass for tone." Then when me and some other people raised concerns over "Seduction (Subjugation-in-the-sense-of-BDSM)" being an actual skill+specialization, he wrote "No idea why this was chosen for inclusion. You're not the only one who's concerned, we know that the eyes of the community are going to be on us especially in this area, we're making a concerted effort to stay away from the problematic depictions we had in the past."

Isn't there a paragraph in the core that says they never convert, ever? It mentions how you can rack up several hundred SDC in a round but this is basically meaningless, MDC material is simply so tough that your bullets are useless. It doesn't get into like, nukes or even cruise missiles but it strongly suggested that SDC guns were basically worth less than it cost to make them.

Yeah, there's no hard conversion. There are some words in some Palladium book about how some classes of SDC damage like big explosions can convert, and there are a number of weapons that have damage given as "2D6x100 SDC + 100 ft knockback (or 2D6 MDC)" but there's no rhyme or reason to which ones get MDC damage ratings. Nor is it clear how you decide whether to cause SDC or MDC damage - player choice per weapon or per shot, GM decision, campaign default?

I'm not sure where the etymology of the term came from, but it's probably a play on words for "organ grinder" and grinding in a RPG/MMO for experience. A lot of grinders will experiment with their own bodies to increase that experience of biohacking. People like Kevin Warwick, who implanted an RFID array into his arm to control various objects; Steve Mann, who has experimented with augmented reality and wearable computing; the performance artist Stelarc; and Lepht Anonym, who created a biopaste that would protect implanted neodymium magnets it implanted itself and was developing a GPS implant it would implant itself. There's a range of genius and crazy all in one when it comes to the grinders.

I'm not going to check but I'm guessing any of the people you just named who are biologically capable of doing so are sporting ridiculous facial hair.
