If Ochiai was willing to just gently caress off and not gently caress with Sidonia they probably would have let him go be a transhumanist hybrid demigod for as long as he wanted.

He tended to plan for the long term, and was probably worried about Sidonia's descendents surpassing him thousands of years in the future and threatening his immortality.

Or he's just a jerk.

Ochiai's a jerk but he was a pragmatic jerk, and probably would've let sidonia be if it was possible. But, as proven by Tanikaze, humans are super loving dangerous and good at killing

Didn't Ochiai kill off like 99.99999999% of Sidonia's original population in his mad quest to become the ultimate being?

I think you guys are giving him way too much credit for being sane and rational.

Yeah, the reason everyone hates him is that his experiments somehow (forget how exactly) resulted in drawing Gauna to Sidonia, killing off most of its population.

He thought the Gauna were chasing the Kabi, or that the Kabi could be used to kill his chimera, so he threw them off the ship. One Gauna didn't take the bait, attacked the defenseless Sidonia and killed all but 500 people in the few minutes it took Tanikaze 1.0 to kill Ochiai and retrieve the Kabi.

He would have made a clone to pat himself on the back.

As Avulsion said, he didn't draw the Gauna, he stripped Sidonia of its only viable defenses at the time by stealing the Kabi. Before he did that there's no indication that Sidonia would have really given a gently caress about him turning himself into goopy monster man and loving off to do his own thing, but dude has a huge ego problem and didn't like the concept that a weapon that could theoretically kill hybrids was still in the hands of others. Incidentally, he repeated the exact same cycle of his first death with the Kunato brainjack; he developed a super awesome nearly invincible hybrid to download his brain into, decided that he really didn't want to leave anyone around with the ability to conceivably harm him, and went unprovoked attempted genocidal murder rampage yet again on Sidonia to attempt to eliminate any possible competition(and got murdered by the son of the person who murdered him the first time). Dude is his own worst enemy.

Did the series get canceled on short notice or something? I don't understand why it's ending like this when there were so many interesting directions it could have gone in that were set up by the author.

He forgot many plot points, as well. Once you've read enough manga you'll come to peace with the fact that Japanese simply can't write endings

Look I know the ending was lovely but there's no need for casual racism in light of that.

i wouldn't call it racism, but i'll walk that back a bit and admit that it only applies to manga/anime. japanese movies and novels i've read have had satisfactory endings

Then you genuinely have a poor understanding of how racism works, no offense meant. Has anyone found a translation yet?

Nihei has incredibly strong concepts and imagery. Generally every series he's done has been more coherent and better-plotted than the last, but seriously, this again? Didn't Biomega and Abara also have very abrupt endings that barely made sense?

All his series get canceled but sidonia was pretty popular which makes this weird.

Maybe the fact all his other series got cancelled means he hasn't had a chance to actually write a proper ending before and just doesn't know how?

Maybe he knows he can't write endings, and he expected it to get canceled after he wrote the romance between the protagonist and the giant man-eating alien dick slug.

This is me on my bike pretty cool huh?
Anime and manga flub the landing more then most other media. But: Most anime is an adaptation of an ongoing work and thus, they gotta just stop when they run out of material or episodes in their run. Manga getting cancelled with 3 chapters to wrap everything up is pretty common. A lot of my favorite shows of all time have rushed endings (escaflowne), great but downer endings (cowboy bebop), or a conclusion that leaves me scratching my head because while it logically might fit in with events it's a total 180 on the tone of the show (gurren laggan). Even with those examples, some of my other favorites like GitS: SAC's second season has a great ending, as does gunbuster and diebuster (being the same ending from two different points of view).

Until I read the last chapter I'm not going to stress out about sidonia, and I don't think the author is going to do anything in his last set of pages that will invalidate what happened before

It's really not, not in the same sense. It's not a question of race though, it's serialization. That can be a week to week month to month kind of deal. TV shows generally get block or year reups. 13 episodes, 24, whatever. They have a point to start and aim toward, no matter what else can happen. Sometimes they bet they'll get another renewal and it doesn't come through and *that* screws the story, but by and large they have a larger assumed workload to design a story around. If you are 3 chapters into what you assumed would be just another arc and you get the notice "Yeah, you are done, we'll give you a few pity chapters to wrap things up" even the best storyteller could have trouble spinning that into gold. And then the converse problem, where you make something popular and you are encouraged to just keep writing it long after you've lost all natural interest, which you do because you like having health care and a place to sleep, and then when it finally comes time to end it you just don't have the spark in you to craft something satisfying.

Those are both problems tv can deal with too, they are just much less likely to have that problem due to the format and assumptions involved. It's just a problem with short turn around fiction, period.
