Eh, I didn't hate it. The frenetic pace was probably the biggest detriment. I feel like X-Files is incongruous with "modern" action-based filming style. Without all the car chases and stuff, at a slower pace, this could have easily been a Season 6-7 era episode, what with the dueling conspirators, alien breeding mumbo jumbo, and such. Now, whether that's your cuppa or not is a different story, but overall this was much more X-Filesey than last season (aside from the brilliant Were-Man, which is one of the show's best ever).

I did find myself comparing whose nose had grown more comically bulbous, Duchovney or Pileggi's.

mastershakeman posted:Season 8 is actually better than a lot of 7, I thought. It's only 9 that really gets bad Yeah I liked Robert Patrick's character, stepping into the WTF skeptic role so Scully could be the "believer", plus he was more credible as an actual FBI agent. Anyway, random lol from this episode at Spender, after all he's been through and done, just to end up living in an apartment building and having to haul his own garbage down to the basement like a schnook. UnknownMercenary posted:My recollection is that the mytharc in 8 was actually more interesting than 7 because the super soldier stuff at least felt like they were building towards something, rather than the puttering around nonsense of 7 after they wrapped up the original Syndicate storyline in 6. I do not remember enjoying any MOTW in season 8 but 7 has some great ones like Je Souhaite, Brand X and Hollywood AD. Via Negativa was pretty good.

Did the ghost post kill this thread? Anyway, tonight's episode was solid, if a bit slow-moving, kind of like last week's. Always like to see exploration of Skinner's backstory especially his Vietnam experiences. Showing him killing the grenade kid was pretty heavy. That war hosed us as a country in a lot of ways.

I've enjoyed every episode of this season except My Struggle III, and the one with the Slenderman ripoff, which wasn't bad but just kinda meh. Best exchange this week: Mulder: "My theory is that it's a hellhound." Scully: *pauses* *stares* "What's a hellhound?"

Mulder monologuing on Big Ideas has been a thing since like late Season 1 or early Season 2. Chop Sunni posted:I liked this one but (possibly this is a touch of 'as a parent, I') it started pretty tone deaf. Oh for sure, the whole opening scene had me riddled with anxiety, as well as the funeral. Dadding has made me pretty sensitive to any depictions of violence against children.
