I'm also doing a rewatch, I just finished One Breath. Why is the Flukeman episode so well-remembered? Sure, the monster design is great, but the show blows it's load halfway through the episode. It goes from just showing us glimpses to full out showing the entire monster just staring at the characters going "bloop glub im the flukeman stuck in your poop chute here". It's so mediocre.

I haven't watched most of these episodes since I was a kid, but the show as a whole so far has held up remarkably well. The physical effects were well done, the writing (even in the mediocre episodes) is competent, and I love the general atmosphere. The only weak point is the music, but for me it just adds to the nostalgia. Someone earlier mentioned that as a kid they identified more with Mulder but upon rewatching started to side with Scully more, and I have to agree. Especially in the first season, when Mulder routinely makes such enormous leaps to connect cases to the supernatural.

What do you dislike about the music? I'm curious because I posted earlier that I'd forgotten just how good it is. It's perfect atmosphere music. I don't notice it most of the time, but when I do, I enjoy it.

The special effects are really good too. I just finished watching 'F. Emasculata' (young Dean Norris!) and it's quite gruesome.
I personally don't dislike it, but I can see how someone watching it for the first time in 2014 would see it as a weak spot. That piano/synth combo is very 90's.

I'm on season 4 and in one of the episodes I watched last night, Scully says something along the lines of "Mulder, if you had to go 2 minutes without your cellphone, you'd go insane."

Mulder is a millennial, apparently.

Goddamn, Small Potatoes is a great episode. With the exception of Home, Musings..., and Small Potatoes, season 4 has been really goddamn grim. I don't like this.

Man oh man, season 5 is real improvement over season 4. The only real clunkers I've run into so far are the Christmas Carol/Emily two-parter. I've heard bad things about the upcoming Chinga, though.

The movie was an attempt to clean up the arc and shoot the show in a new(ish) direction, right? I just started season 6 last night, and even though the Syndicate and Gibson and (I'm assuming) Crycek are all still there, the new mythology bits the 6 premiere adds don't feel like more poo poo on the pile. It feels streamlined. I'm also not immediately hating the change of scenery, possibly because these are the episodes I consistently followed as a kid. The Mulder/Scully dynamic is aces right now too. I'm sure later episodes will ruin this once they get together.

Drive was pretty good though.

Season 3 has to be the peak. Or at least the route to the peak. All of the mytharc episodes are actually good, you have 3 Darin Morgan episodes, and you have sweet-spot episodes like Syzygy and Pusher where you have this good mix of creepy and funny.

Whenever I rewatch Fallen Angel I always expect to hear "Unmarked Helicopters" by Soul Coughing playing in Max's trailer, and I'm always a little disappointed when it isn't there(it's replaced with generic radio noises.) I guess either the band or the publisher withdrew permission to use it, I don't know. But it's kind of weird that except for off-air recordings from the time, there's no version of that episode with the song still in it. It wasn't on the VHS release, DVD or Netflix. Somehow they managed to clear every other song featured in the show apart from that one.

Are you sure about this? Last year I rewatched the whole show using the original DVD box sets and I'm almost positive I heard that song in that episode.

The X-Files

Chris Carter breaks down some of the items that can be seen on the set of Mulder’s home in The X-Files 2.0.

1. Vacuum Cleaner
“The idea here is that Mulder has kind of moved into his living room. It should suggest something else about Mulder that I won’t spoil, but Mulder has moved into the central room of his house, and everything that might come into play in such a messy house is in that room.”

2. Newspaper Clippings and Graphs on the Wall
“There’s a theme here on this wall, a UFO/extraterrestrial theme. This is the accumulation of a man’s obsession,” Carter says.

3. VCR
Those VHS tapes? They’re meant to suggest one of Mulder’s edgier character traits: his appreciation for porn. Carter states, “Mulder’s porn addiction is currently firmly in check. These are remnants of a former obsession.”

4. “I Want to Believe” Poster
Composed of hundreds of tiny photos, this Easter egg is the creation of a fan group called X-Philanthropy that asked fellow “X-Philes” to buy a spot in the mosaic, with proceeds going to Gillian Anderson’s SA-YES charity.

5. Trunk
“The tattered furniture here -represents Mulder’s tattered life,” says Carter. “Mulder has always been a fringe dweller, in every sense of the term. You can imagine him on the outskirts of society, and maybe sanity.”

6. Map on the Wall
A chart of UFO sightings, of course. (That’s a lot of probing.)

I'm finally getting around to season 9, but man is it a slog. I like Doggett, but Reyes and her dumb psychic powers are so painful to watch.

One thing I noticed when I recently re-watched the series is that Scully's a dead-eye marksman. When she shoots at something she almost always hits it.

The only reason I haven't bought any of the X-Files Pop Vinyls is because they gave Scully a flashlight and Mulder a gun, instead of vice versa like it should be. It's a ridiculous thing to complain about, but it bugs me.
