DmC was just forgettable generic but competent enough. It wasn't terrible. It wasn't amazing. It just sort of was a by the numbers game in the genre with some pretty visuals. Also Brad is loving torpedoing this UPF.

I've been reading a bunch of Patrick's articles lately and have concluded that man... there needs to be some sort of concentrated effort to get that dude to go play Nier. That seems to be just the type of weird obscure but super interesting thing right up that guy's alley.

Hashy posted:I'm in the same boat with Dark Souls' success. I do like the way the game controls, and its attitude towards difficulty, narrative and world building, but I hate the boss/combat design. Bayonetta is a great example of brilliant combat design—all of the game logic is completely deterministic, all attacks are well signposted and it makes other affordances that makes being hit your own stupid fault every single time. It's designed to be mastered, and then made your own. It's a game with completely differenet goals to DeS/DaS, but I find myself longing for those features when playing anything with melee combat and Dark Souls is no exception I love Dark/Demon's Souls and Bayonetta. They are both the exact same design philosophy of "look get good at video games again you limp dicked soft gently caress". I do not know how you hold Bayonetta up and denounce Souls for both going "hey this is what we're doing here. This is the game mechanics. This is your skill set. GET GOOD FUCKER!" Edit: Souls gets an edge for not having a terrible 15 minute complete gameplay change homage to lovely old games. Twice. Bayonetta needs to get called on that poo poo more often because goddamn. That is some top tier garbage gameplay in an otherwise pretty great game. Nohman fucked around with this message at 06:55 on Jan 19, 2014 |

Liberation is just an Assassin's Creed rear end Assassin's Creed game. If you feel the need for even more of that annualized series, here's some more. It's not great. It's not terrible. It's just more. Still better than AC3 though.

All of your examples are area-specific gimmicks; of course you're not going to be shown those really early because they exist to make those levels more unique, plus they're both also taught at the very beginning of those specific areas. Having played the Titanfall Beta: Do you want kind of a bad Unreal Tournament movement system with Call of Duty mechanics and future weapons that aren't terribly interesting or inventive? Also giant robots that suck and die easy as perks? Boom! Done! Titanfall! Is anyone in the real world actually hyped about that game? I've never met anyone past mildly interested to "the gently caress is Titanfall" from people who usually play Call of Duty yearly.

Hakkesshu posted:You know that entire mechanic they showed in the previews where some areas are pitch black, and you'll have to consider the risk/reward factor of bringing a torch or not? Turns out the old consoles can't handle that level of dynamic lighting. You can see just fine in most areas, even the ones that are supposed to be dark, and torches are there purely as some sort of weird gimmick that sometimes affects stuff in very limited capacities if you light sconces. You've clearly not made it to Blighttown and Tomb of the Giant's bastard child.

It would be like Flowers for Algernon where Brad for one brief day plays video games at above an autistic toddler level, recognizes boss patterns, has memory beyond a goldfish, doesn't fret over lost progress that is easily reclaimed, and makes decisions on the fly. He does a SL1 run of Dark Souls 2, does Mile High Club on the highest difficulty in a single go, plays the entirety of Spelunky with no damage up to Yama. By the end he is running into the first goomba on 1-1 of Super Mario Brothers and playing DOTA2...poorly. It ends with the poignant note of Brad Shoemaker shrieking... Burial at Sea Episode 2 was Ken Levine furiously masturbating to his past glory of Bioshock 1 and retconning Bioshock Infinite to ultimately being a great big prequel to the original game before blungeoning Infinite to death. Literally. Everything you do in that DLC is just setting up Bioshock 1 and Atlas/Bioshock 1 beats Elisabeth/Infinite to death with a wrench at the end once that is accomplished in the most hamfisted way possible. Nothing that transpired in that game matters beyond making Bioshock 1, Ken Levine's masterpiece that was both well received and didn't underperform, a thing. Knowing the studio got shut down and a poo poo load of people lost their jobs after that garbage of an ending kind of feels childish and scummy. I dunno...
