I still have no idea what Carlton are trying to achieve with their list.

In other random 2014 thoughts, the Power and Doggies were super entertaining last year so I hope they get better. The Eagles were confusingly terrible last year so they're the hardest to place. Melbourne are also difficult because there is talent there so who knows.

The Hawks on the other hand should be ok. We played Buddy further up the ground last year so the forward line shouldn't be too out of whack, and McEvoy is a huge bonus as a replacement for Bailey. The draftees look neat too.

id really like to see the power make the finals again, their end to 2012 was epic.

i think the dees desperately need a good run with injury, if they get that then there might be some light

i think the eagles also suffered from gaff and shuey coming under closer scrutiny than they were used to (plus schuey's injuries), they should be better for it this year round

also the OP was pretty light on with the dees recent history. i would have made more mention of how badly the club screwed itself over by spending 3 years rebuilding their list then hiring some turkey who throws it all out the window on arrival and actively trades for other clubs dead wood so they can be dead wood in the dees colours instead. most supporters should have been wearing black to games instead of red and blue at mid-point during 2012. if they actually went to games n such.

for real tho i like having H in the league, i think he generally has some real poignant things to say about race relations in australia in being a dude who is australian in that altho he was born abroad he was raised here since he was 3. his comments about walking down the street and having people yell out racial epithets at him from cars is a thing i know a few of my mates have experienced despite being australian regardless of their skin colour, and its good to open a public conversation on these things - ie dont do that, stop being a racist shithead etc.

I play Footy and I actually played a game of mixed Afl 9's last week too, it was...interesting? Can't really comment on groin problems but last season I found my kicking leg hamstring was sore basically all season even with extensive stretching and rubs, which is annoying.

But you should play normal footy! It's the most fun I've had playing a sport ever, it was my first season last year and I'm 26 haha.

i have been wanting to play club footy for loving ages but kept letting circumstances get in the way (working as a contractor in a physical job, then most recently working away), and now im in a position to be able to play it just fine except im gonna be in the US for 6 weeks mid-year with probably another holiday or so in there too so dont really wanna spend however many hundred signing up to a club i'll only play half the season for (if im lucky).

that said i still really wanna play club footy. we'll see how 9's goes for the next 9 weeks or so. i actually really like 9's. its pretty counter-intuitive to normal footy (especially when playing in defence) but i like to think of it as a high intensity skills training session rather than a footy game. our first game turned out alright though, we were beaten easily in the first half but held the other team scoreless in the second to win by 11

i got some fond memories of junior footy though.

there was always that fat kid who used to scream abuse at the umpire all game despite being really shithouse himself.

there was always the kid who hit puberty early and was a foot taller and 10kg heavier than everyone else on the field and would play in ruck then just come coasting through clearances to kick 50m goals at ball ups with 4 kids hanging off him.

there was always the one good kick in the team who would always end up at full back just cos he could hit targets from kickouts regardless of how good a defender he actually was.

there was always the spuds who were stuck in back pocket or forward pocket because the coaches didnt really give a poo poo.

also the afl 9's team last night had a dude who was legit in his 50's and not even 60kg turn up to play so: suck it up, get into it, no worse than going to kings cross/northbridge every week as far as risk goes

the only time i ever turned in a good game during junior footy was when i was 14 and playing against the club which was mostly made up of the kids i was going to high school with and i somehow got put onto back flank then managed to kick the ball backwards in the first quarter. i was so pissed off at myself i hit every clearance as hard as i could for the rest of the game and got BOG that game. the next match i got named back pocket.

i only ever got a mars bar :\

also when i was playing 9's the other year we had a kid who was like 13 playing for us who completely tore it up as an inside mid. it was hilarious given that there was myself and maybe 2 or 3 other players who could reliably take marks/hit targets in the entire other team, but we had this kid who was maybe 5'5 and 40kg who would just dominate nearly every clearance. pretty much every other player in the side had clearly never played junior footy nevermind any junior sport at all.

ive always been jealous of people who are good in close, ive always been useless at it. which probably explains why i was always shithouse at basketball. im okay-ish as a forward on the lead or defending as im relatively quick as a guy whos 6'2 and close to 100kg but yeah the midfield has always been beyond me.

Man what is AFL 9's?

afl played with 9 players each side(3 in def, mid, and fwd) over a 100m pitch. everyone needs to start in their zone but can go wherever after ballup, only fwds can kick goals and then only within fwd zone, touch rules (you get 2 secs with no prior), automatic turnovers on every pass by foot or hand. other than that its basically footy.

From watching some of the games at half time at the footy, it also looks like you can't kick over a zone? Like someone in the back zone can't just bomb it all the way over the mid zone into the forward, someone has to take possession in the middle before moving it forward?

So what if you don't have a team, and it's just you and you'd like to go along and be part of a team? I could only find info on joining as a group, I think.

yeah no big 50m bombs, cant kick it from backline to foward zone. the game rewards short bullet passes. the main thing thats different is playing in defence, in that if a hit up pass to a fwd thats going to miss and youre defending you are better off letting it pass through your hands than trying to go the grab cos you get the free kick anyway. the only loose grabs are in centre clearances.

there should be coordinators listed for each area, email them and ask about teams looking for extra players. i think a season is about 900 bucks for 10 games or so, so you can generally play casually for ~10 bucks each game depending on the team and how many games you play.

its a good game and i highly recommend it to anyone who likes kicking the footy around but isnt so keen on running 20 laps every training session only to get shirtfronted 10 minutes in by some fat bogan in c-grade in their first grade.
