For someone who says he loves science fiction, I'm a little skeptical that this guy knows what he's talking about. Also, a little worried that Chloe was a flash in the pan.

KungFu Grip posted:poo poo we have had a monster with tits on his head and one that had a penis for a head didn't we. Lets hope we get a butt head and and vagina head too. Well, that dry alien had a crack anyway. One thing that kind of bugged me last night, sort of like the "why do these Beasts look like where they live?" last week: why do the aliens on this show always look like they got their clothes where Tusken Raiders shop? They're supposed to be advanced enough to come to Earth and leave crop circles, or shoot a crop-circle beam from wherever they live, or whatever, so why are they hanging around in (often tattered) robes, and otherwise looking like they're barely out of the Stone Age? That Toader turned out kinda bad at the last second, but he at least had sort of a 70s-era alien foot soldier look going for him. I suspect it's one of those shortcuts that you take when it's early in the season and you're getting used to the whole "you have three days to build something" situation, but it comes off kind of cheaty to me.

Someone is literally going to die. We've had a couple of posts in the general SyFy thread about it; it's pretty good, as these things go. I missed tonight's episode though, didn't realize anything huge went down on Wednesdays each week other than someone getting sent home. Was there more stun-stick gladiatorial combat?

The costume is often just a frame for their sculptural/painting work and sometimes it's even used to try and hide their gently caress ups. When the creatures are from Earth they can at least get the wardrobe people to get them some interesting clothes but when the contest is off planet they either need to manufacture something themselves or just cover the unpainted areas with generic material with some sort of texture to it as best they can, which often ends up being a ratty cloak or a bundle of rags. Sometimes they'll put some generic human clothing on their aliens (one had a lycra bodysuit this episode, I've seen some in fancy formal dresses), sometimes the costume is just a complete afterthought and they just put the bare minimum on there and then sometimes you'll get contestants like Roy who'll construct a complete suit of battle armour seemingly out of nowhere.

Yeah, on the alien who won the robe was obviously there because they thought it was the easiest way that the judges could see the sculpting job on the chest. Which, it was a good sculpting job and I wouldn't want them to cover it up, it just kind of took me out of it that no one, not even the winner, was wearing a space suit. Actually, I'd really like to see someone do an extraterrestrial robot for one of the alien challenges, some time. It would've worked pretty well for a few of the crop circle "messages" on this one, and maybe gotten some points for imagination. "Running out of water" and the robot shows signs of a runaway uncooled power source, like a glowing chest (or wherever you want the reactor to be), plating beginning to distort with the heat. Or "our sun is dying" and the robot is covered in solar panels, with one arm as some sort of device for siphoning power out of unsuspecting helpful humans. Or "gravity is changing" and the robot is all accordioned and/or built-up in places, which would be kind of neat for implying a formerly very non-human shape that got squashed together. That might be a little too Roy/Zorg for anyone else to pull it off in time. Maybe one of these days, though.

The aliens were on dying planets (except for the toad), why would they have nice clothes? When you're struggling to find resources or battling disease, chemicals, or the laws of physics to stay alive, jaunting down the block to the alien gap so you look your best for a photo shoot isn't high on your priority list.

Magnus Condomus posted:Season 1 had that backwards quadrupedal pregnant alien with no clothes. Sometimes, I really miss Tate. And I think the reason why very few people attempt robots is because rigid, man-made forms are harder for most people to sculpt than organic forms. Look how much trouble everyone had with the Tin Man back in the season 2 premier. It's also easier to hide imperfections on organic-looking prosthetics when you're quickly sculpting by hand (and we know how much Glenn hates unintentional asymmetry).

I liked the mushroom-sickness guy's robes because they looked kind of medical to me for some reason, probably a star-trek based one. Icecap-melting lady wearing really really long robes to hide her human feet was stupid though, because you know that hem is going to be constantly soaking. Wasn't one of them in what was essentially a bathrobe? I guess they don't have a lot of control over the wardrobe, and don't really get judged on it unless it's specifically part of the challenge.
