Loving the giant block of wood. Is that absolutely a question of level, or will some styles help you poo poo out more damage?

Level, equipment, and styles can all boost your damage output. If I had all of Haren's fire moves when I went into the dojo then I could probably get farther by using his big Combo attack. Even then it still probably wouldn't finish them all, and I didn't have the cash anyway.

A filled Trinity gauge could also boost the damage output by a good +70-100%, but you only get one shot with that. There are items that add +70% to the trinity gauge like I mentioned at the end, but since the Board Battle only allows you one action, it means that if you use one of those items it kicks you back out and you have to pay to enter the match again.

I found another dojo since then, and I'm getting the impression that we're not supposed to be able to beat them when we encounter them (found a way anyway).

Part 1 - Joshua's Memoirs (~17 minutes)
Part 2 - Mount Feissen (~16 minutes)

Now that we're reading about the six heroes and the Light of Salvation, our new mission is to collect all the elemental shards. With it, we can summon it and end the war for good!

Today we get to walk into another elemental dungeon. This one is a volcano, where it's extremely hard to see! Also we pick up a new style for Calintz.

Fabulous. They are looking for fantasy enriched plutonium with the purpose of eliminating a slightly inconvenient race, covertly working for a guy who is most likely planning all that without any approval from the higher ups. This game's writing does succeed at causal unquestioned racism.

And the party are basically a team of Metal Gear bosses now.

If the writers were going for shades of gray, this is definitely not the way to do it. All non Reith or Maya characters are bad. I bet they will eventually learn the obvious in a poor attempt of character development.

This reminds me, there was another game that has racism as a big part of the story. In that game, the "heroes" didn't realize racism is bad until an evil entity that gained strength from the racism showed up. I'm looking forward to seeing what it will take for the characters of this game to realize they are idiots.

Watch out, Snake! That's Leering Wallaby!

"Leering?" What, is he a child molester or something?

Well, there have been some charges... but that's beside the point, Snake! He's from a long line of airship pilots, so he's got great control over his own aerial capabilities!

So I should hit him with something he can't avoid in the air. Nikitas it is.

I was just about to warn you about that! They call him "Leering" Wallaby because of his skill with a crossbow. He can take down any kind of ballistics you fire at him in the blink of an eye with that thing! Just like-

"Just like my Japanese animes," right?

Exactly! So you'll need to have crack reflexes to take him down. He has to stand still for a bit to load the crossbow, so just after he fires, try to get a bead on him for the best results!

Got it.

Tales of Symphonia did racism well, if only because like all of the Tales games before Xillia, it ramped things up to absolute, glorious insanity before the end. :allears:

Grimey Drawer
Symphonia did the whole racism thing pretty oddly. First the Bad Race is totally evil. Then the Bad Race is completely oppressed. Then the Bad Race is turned into ubermensch and it turns out the Bad Guy only did all the bad things he did because he wanted his sister back who died because of Racism thousands of years ago. Also he used to be a civil rights activist until the sister died and he went insane.

I had fun playing the game but the story is terrible.

And why are Humans okay, Elves okay, but Half-Elves are subhumanoid filth? That never made sense to me.

Nessa
Dec 15, 2008

Most games don't seem to do race issues well, because it's generally just white people race and white people with pointy ears race. They'd rather do something that kind of resembles a race issue without actually having anything to do with race.

That game also had Lloyd's group preach about how Half-elves shouldn't be discriminated against, but ironically they end up killing far more of them than anything else.

Part 2 - Reith vs. The Four Warriors (~24 minutes)

Man, unwinnable battles are such bullshit. So I really shouldn't have been surprised that Magna Carts would have two in a row. I was kinda hoping that Team Ladies in Love would make a cool turn around, but no, just another fight that should've been a cutscene.

It's strange that they allowed the first one against him to be winnable (way back in the very beginning after you first got knocked off the bridge) But either way the reaction is the same. I find it rather weird that these insanely powerful warriors are just walking randomly around and no one seems to really care that they are.
And I just need to bring up again how loving horrible the voice acting is. It's like they gave every voice actor Dramamine beforehand, gave them the script for the first time, recorded it once and went "gently caress it, good enough." They all talk so slowly. I'm glad that you all talk over it, because otherwise I would be forced to listen to it constantly.

I've only been watching this thread when I remember about it (sorry), but I liked the Team Reith update, especially Rianna. I liked that the much-needed muscle for the dual-ice-healer team was a woman, and that the two bosses were also women.

I did find it dumb that after a "supposed to lose" fight, the game made you run back all that way only for a SECOND "supposed to lose" fight.

You can swap around the characters IN your party freely, but you can't swap between Calintz's group and Reith's group until the plot says so.

I like to switch around my fighters to keep them all leveled, and because it's just plain better watching.

The game is pretty much completely linear so far, except there are all kinds of routes you can try to go down until the game stops you and says "No no no! Not this way!" with no real idea which way is the correct way to go.
