I am loving this to bits. It's such a wonderful collection of game idiosyncrasies all in one place. The expressions really tie it all together.

I love how he tries to come to terms that having a well-rounded character in real life is the way to go, as opposed to showing all the points into one stat as game logic dictates :allears:

Going back to the "powers affecting real world" thing, it seems the setting operated on Mage rules.
In Mage, magic works differently if you're in the presence of Muggles. If you use your powers to do a short handstand or something, nobody will think it's weird and you won't get punished.
But if you affect reality in a way that defies common sense, referred to as "vulgar magic" in Mage, reality punishes you with a Paradox.
Paradoxes are reality trying to fix the discrepancy between the Muggle's common sense and your actions, in a way that is always bad for you. These range from having you sparkle (giving away your position to an enemy) to summoning an Abomination or a Paradox Spirit to wipe you out of existence (you should avoid those).

Interestingly, Mage makes a point that perception is all that matters. Particularly, television has a very notable effect on the Muggles. So in Mage, if you were to enchant a shotgun to make large holes in your enemies, you wouldn't be punished as harshly for it as if you cause the same effect through simple magic. Shotguns cause huge holes in action movies, so the Muggle's common sense isn't as badly jarred.

I imagine the same principle is in play here.

It seems a little different from Mage. When explaining the rule Sun-Il gave the example that winning the lottery would effect the real-world too much so it flat out isn't allowed. But people win the lottery legitimately without using bullshit magic powers, yes it is unlikely but it isn't a violation of the natural order.

Basically it sounds like Mage but without being based on perception, which changes things a lot. Mage penalizes magic that is too noticeable but this penalizes magic that is too significant.

But afterwards Sun-Il says that a rule of thumb is whether normal people notice that something is wrong. So changing the flavor of seaweed buns is fine, but using your powers to win the lottery is not. It might be because winning the lottery in itself is a weird action, like people would notice something is wrong and as such the world punishes you. But if you won it legitimately, then obviously it doesn't matter to the world, regardless how weird it is to other people.

And the powers manifest based on something important to people psychologically, right? Sun-gon's reason is probably because he was constantly alone.

I wonder why he didn't try to make a super jump.
Or at least a double jump. Hell, this one should be pretty easy for him, just make a temporary physical barrier then leap off it, DMC-style. That seems well within the realms of his powers.

I mean it's not teleportation, but you take what you get, right?

Maybe he needs a map to warp place to place? Like he opens it up, focuses on a location, a prompt comes up and boom he's there?

Yeah, when it didn't effect the Invasion status I was thinking "Well, duh" and then at the end he slips in that he managed to lower it to intermediate like it was no big deal. With his basic healing skill!

But he mentions he tried it a few more times and it didn't get below intermediate. So to fully remove it, he either has to grind the gently caress out of his skill, or find some other way to remove her curse. Since she was born with it, I'm guessing he can only lessen its effects.

Loved the face at the end. :allears:

I reread the first few chapters and I noticed that Hwan Sung-Gon's little ring with the chains connects to a bracelet with these little hooks. He seems to detach them and re-attach them into new positions whenever he's summoning something. His bracelet has its own chains that go further up his arm.

Incidentally, how are you supposed to pronounce the characters' names?

Hw-ONE Soon-gong?
Ku-wong she-yun?
Shin Soon-eel?

I'm okay with honorifics and untranslated words so long as they are explained in the margins and aren't obnoxious (like that keikaku example). I like learning about foreign culture and the story loses a little something if it's just straight-up removed.

The Evil Thing posted:

An easy way of doing things is just to add a redundant word. People do it all the time when handling foreign languages. For example, "sharia law" literally means "law law", but it helps people who don't speak Arabic to know what it's about. Similarly, consider "okonomiyaki pancake". The reader has a vague idea of what the food is and they're spared some explanatory note breaking flow, while they aren't likely to be getting the wrong impression. It's like having your gateau and eating it.

This is a good idea too.

Having leveled a character to 30 with 10s and 100s in all SPECIAL and skills, I can tell you for a fact that it does not. You basically always get crits and that's about it.

In NV, a high luck allows you to regularly and consistently win at gambling. It's actually legit fun to make a character, get your luck to 10, book it to New Vegas and win big in all the casinoes. It's also useful for the Dead Money casino, since you can use the chips for endless repair kits. Enjoy your holorifle funtimes. The crit chance is there too, of course.
I think it also affects enemies' chance to hit somewhat, but don't quote me on that.

I do like how he's actually becoming more responsible and more serious about magic. And with his new skills he's now a Mageknight or a Warmage. Looking forward to see his magic teacher.

Though I was hoping he'd be crazy enough to call up The Witch of Slaughter to ask her for magic advice. Missed opportunity, comic.

Of course there's the problem that he has to grind that new skill all the way from the start. I can already feel the tedium.
