Wonderful OP full of glorious info. I've also started some hugelkultur and have plans/are working on an "orchard" that is closer to what some would call a "food forest" This is a great idea for a thread and I look forward to following a long and contributing where possible. THANKS!

Not sure a Pain Mound (the best name for anything, ever imo) would have worked out for me this year. We had -20F and below for extremely long periods of time with no snow cover as insulation. The frost depths are incredible! It is a neat idea but maybe you would be better off growing willow or other species and combusting or gasifying them to provide your heat etc in place of the rotting pile? Well dried material burnt in a gasifier has incredibly low emissions when you consider that you are burning stuff
