I got small boxes inside big boxes and red x's The small box is a claim and the big box is the buffer around that claim. The red x is saying you can't place a claim there. Your claim box will turn blue if you can actually put it down. I've had mixed results with placing claims in another persons buffer, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
