I don't know if it is appropriate to post here about it but I'm an ATCALS guy (or metnav or raws or techops or. . . whatever) who fixes all the bullshit that the the tower uses to do their job (with the exception of radar & lighting systems) as well as landing systems for the pilots and all that.

I'd love to answer any questions if anyone has some for the maintenance guy.

A question I have for the thread is, does anyone here have towers with solar-powered obstruction lights? We're looking at switching over to them for the tower cab due to a variety of circumstances, and the tower chief wants to know more about them ahead of time from another base or airport that already have them.

Well the first few times you witness a crossover event with simultaneous parallel departures, you begin to understand the prudence of having a reminder. There's really no time to correct it if someone turns the wrong way.

ZDV has officially become the bad guy with the medevac thing. Declaring emergencies for pilots that explicitly state that they don't want or need it to give them direct kind of poo poo. We've gone completely off the rails.

poo poo, that's further than the people who go direct in our facility take it.
There's one that says he'll move 60 planes out of the way for a medevac and thinks he's God's gift to ATC. Too bad he doesn't understand S46 will just bitch at us for sending a plane straight into the departure stream and they still have to sequence them, more often than not adding a delay.
When you call a sector and he's working it, his response is "God, what?! Approved!" before you even say anything.

The plumbing contractor has been working 18 hour days since the storm and cannot come in tonight but they will be in in the morning to pump out the holding tank and to remove the debris that is blocking the pumps. The estimate is 11am at the latest for the bathrooms to be operational.

That's really good. The agency has to have some sort of system in place to weed out most of the "I will literally never get fired for anything I do" examples because otherwise the FAA would be full of them and congress would have to act to solve the dysfunction.

I wish I could go into any sort of detail but can't because of my position. In absolutely completely unrelated news, I'm finally going to get the liability insurance that supervisors can get.

Is there some kind of audio warning system in towers that goes off if an airplane crosses into the departure path of a different runway?

A few days ago at SEA, I saw an airplane depart 16C, and make an immediate left turn across the departure path for 16L, which they weren't supposed to do.

While the tower controller was giving them an "immediate" turn back to runway heading, it sounded like there was something going "WARNING, WARNING" in the background, which I assumed had to be related.

Go on ... :allears:

There are only 2 out of 6 areas at ZJX that have controllers. The other areas have glorified phraseology specialists. The D-Side trainees in those two areas get more respect than the CPCs in the other four areas. One area does almost half the entire facility's numbers. People that transfer in to the facility wash out of the north area super fast, or straight up refuse to train in it.

So you have a really weird storm of people overworked/stressed and others that are getting 6 figure welfare. The north area only gets to homegrow new controllers cause CPCs nope the gently caress out of there. And training time for the area is over three years. Compare that to the other four who max out at two (and that includes D and R school). The gulf area's training for a new controller is 1-1.5 for a new controller. So, a North and Gulf area trainee get paid completely different for three years while one is actually stressed.

So the facility has a really weird mix of poo poo. It wasn't unusual for north area CPCs to apply for sup positions just to get a break (cause they weren't ever allowed to transfer areas). And the entire facility has an extremely high "skater" number due to the fact the other areas just don't need their manning. So people get slapped in to office jobs/schedules super quick in those areas.

The NATCA reps in the skate areas fight tooth and nail to keep their CPCs on the floor if they get in trouble cause they want to keep their breaks. I'm not kidding when I say what I'm about to say. Four of the areas at ZJX average more than four hours on break a day. One of them at least five. That's an average. It wasn't uncommon to BS with someone from the Gulf area and them say they had only been on position 30 minutes when they are almost done with their shift. And these guy aren't scheduled for additional duties.

So, drug addicts, people with DUIs and pending investigations, and people literally showing up to work drunk keep their status there.

Yenko: I'm not sure the exact details, but yeah.

At airports with closely spaced parallel runways, is there some kind of audible alarm that sounds if a departing airplane wanders into the departure path for another runway?

A few weeks ago at SEA, I heard a Southwest flight accidentally turn across the departure paths for the other runways (there were no departures off them, so there wasn't a collision risk), and while the tower controller was telling Southwest to turn the correct direction, it sounded like some kind of alarm was going off in the background that I don't recall ever hearing there.
