This is correct. Anything listed as a "X Action" can only be done during an action window in phase X. There's a nice chart of the action windows in this reference sheet.

Tried my first game of the LoTR LCG with my wife the other day. The game is in serious need of a reference card for the seven phases that you're supposed to go through. Even having watched the video tutorial and a series of Watch It Played videos, I still struggled to remember bits and pieces like dealing out shadow cards and increasing threat during the refresh phase. Made it difficult to learn and teach.

We managed to get through the first scenario without too much trouble, though as I mentioned we forgot to add shadow cards, increase threat and sort out When Revealed effects quite a few times. I copped two "Caught in a Web" cards on the first two turns, which sucked. Thankfully, I had a "Steward of Gondor" on one of the guys that got it.

I was thinking of trying with a third player this weekend. Beyond needing a third threat tracker (which we can replace with pen and paper) and cycling through the encounter deck quicker, is there any real reason why we can't use a single core set?

Try this reference sheet. I'll add this to the OP when I get around to redoing, as well as ones for AGOT/Netrunner.

Nothing stopping from playing with 3 or 4 players with a single core, but you might be hurting for cards once you want to try deck-building. Enjoy the game!

At this point it will just serve as an introduction for a new player, so I won't be deck building for now. I haven't decided how I'm going to treat the deck-building aspect of the game yet. At this point I've been treating it more like a board game, since I'm fairly sure my wife isn't interested in deck building. Thanks again.

So all this LOTR talk has given me the urge to play it again, so I threw together these two decks. I have one Core, all of the Mirkwood Cycle, Over Hill and Under Hill, Heirs of Numenor, and The Steward's Fear. Help me make them not awful!

Deck Built with CardGameDB.com LotR Deckbuilder

Leadership/Spirit Rohan/Dwarf

Hero (3)
Eowyn (Core) x1
Dunhere (Core) x1
Dain Ironfoot (RtM) x1

Ally (26)
Eomund (CatC) x2
Escort from Edoras (AJtR) x3
Snowbourn Scout (Core) x3
Westfold Horse-Breaker (THfG) x3
Wandering Took (Core) x2
Fili (OHaUH) x2
Kili (OHaUH) x2
West Road Traveller (RtM) x2
Elfhelm (TDM) x2
Errand-rider (HON) x2

The Galadhrim's Greeting (Core) x2
Astonishing Speed (RtM) x3
For Gondor! (Core) x2
Fortune or Fate (Core) x1

Lore/Tactics Gondor/Dwarf

Gondorian Shield (TSF) x2
Spear of the Citadel (HON) x2

Goblin-cleaver (OHaUH) x2
Lorien's Wealth (Core) x2
Secret Paths (Core) x2
Radagast's Cunning (Core) x2
Behind Strong Walls (HON) x2

I wanted to use Dwarves, but most of them are Lore/Tactics, so I put Dain in the other deck. I then put Rohan/Gondor stuff in there, because why not. I wanted to put Leadership Boromir in there, too, but I'd rather have two Spirit Heroes. Don't particularly want to use Dunhere either, but I figured the Rohan trait would help him out. I'll have to experiment between him and Frodo.

For your first deck have you considered Nori as the third hero? He'd be more useful if you had more dwarf allies than just Kili and Fili but if you're not going to take advantage of Dunhere's attacking ability then maybe Nori's higher Willpower and Defense might benefit you.

Also how useful has Wandering Took proved for you? I haven't ever used it in a deck before so I haven't seen it in action.

One last thing, my friends and I like to play this game with 3 or 4 people and Into the Deep keeps kicking our rear end. Anyone have any general advice for that quest? It seems to me that the key is location management but I'm not sure what cards besides Secret Paths and Northern Tracker we should be focusing on.

Aaaaaah! Finally beat the third quest from Khazad-dum. This is my first time reaaaaaally having to tailor a deck to the quest rather than using a generic questing or combat deck. Honestly I think it finally clicked for me that this isnt like any other deck builder I've played and that making a deck for the quest is legit and how its supposed to be played.

Loving this poo poo. Also that even though I have to possibly remake a deck a deck for a quest doesn't mean it can't be thematic :)

Yeah, I thought about Nori, but I don't have any other Leadership/Spirit dwarves except for the Longbeard Orc Slayers and Brok Ironfist, and they won't really work in there. I'll probably use Frodo, but I've got to test the deck as is, first.

Wandering Took is pretty great for this kind of setup. I want to lower the threat of the questing deck, and raise the threat of the combat deck. He might leave if I get more threat reducing cards, but for now, he's nice.

I can't speak for the quest itself, but don't forget a lot of locations can be dealt with by simply using larger amounts of Willpower (or Attack/Defense for Battle/Siege). You've got Legolas, Snowbourn Scout, Blade of Gondolin, and Strength of Will to help deal with locations, too.

The Saga expansions follow the events of the books and have some cool cards in them. I am just buying everything in release order to play through. I've always heard good things about Khazad-Dum and the Dwarrowdelf cycle, but I haven't had a chance to play with any of those cards yet. The first cycle of adventure packs was just reprinted, so those could be worth picking up while they are still easy to find.

I'd vote not to worry about it too much except don't just get Heirs of Numenor first (cause I hear its super hard if you have a limited pool of cards). I started with Khazad-dum and Dwarrowdelf cycle because it was what was in stock when I wanted more quests. Working though it now, so far I am enjoying it quite a bit.
The Hobbit and Saga stuff is super thematic. I can't wait to get more of that too.

I've got the Heirs of Numenor and Against the Shadow cycle in full, along with the base, Black Riders, and a couple other APs from Mirkwood/Dwarrodelf. I've made a nice Outlands deck (I think!), but unless I get those +willpower outlands allies, I absolutely need a partner who can quest worth a drat.

I think it's possible to make decks, but they're probably best off being combat focused. I'm investigating a ranger/trapping deck possibility, low threat, good questing, and knocking creatures out via traps. It sounds like a fun idea that HoN helps push. Not sure about viability.

Star Wars multiplayer is pretty good, but if there's an imbalance of player skill you'll essentially have 1 person beating up 2 in a 2v2 game. 3v1 or 2v1 is good with the challenge decks, but you really need to build specifically to crack the challenge decks which makes it not quite as good.

In ziplock bags in a a box. The two current decks that have been made a a bag each. The remaining player cards sorted by colour then into one big deck in a bag, or two if they don't all fit. Quest and scenario cards sorted by their symbols and then put together into bags. I don't sort by where they came from (e.g. Core, OHUH or OtDS). Tokens are each in a bag each.

Voice of Isengard player cards are up on Hall of Beorn. Pretty cool stuff, especially Grima, Saruman, and the Rohan Warhorse. I think I'll pick up The Black Riders before this, though.

In addition, if you had to recommend one purchase for a new Lord of the Rings player, what would it be? Other then a second core set. I'll include a link to Tales from the Cards' Buying Guide in the OP, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. Personally, I'd recommend The Black Riders for its combination of cool player cards and quests, though I don't know how difficult those quests are.

Edit: It just occurred to me that the Isengard Allies will trigger on Doomed cards from the Encounter deck as well. Not that there's a whole lot of them, but something to consider.

Hmm, maybe they only give you one set of the cards in the box? Which is a little useless, and you'd be better off buying the set for the 3 packs, but that's the only reason I can think of. I can't imagine that the few other house cards that come in those boxes cover more than half the cost.
