what is a good, relatively cheap (let's say up to $200 used) 2m/70cm radio for a beginner? i got my license almost a year ago and haven't used it at all. i live in dc, so i imagine the longer waves are prob not best for me

Seems like some people like these BaoFeng cheap HTs as beginner radios/throwaways. For $40, seems like a real cheap way to get hooked until you get a better rig.
thanks. i ordered a uv-82, since that link seems to like it a hair more than the 5r and it wasn't much more expensive. i'd get a b5 since those seems cheaper, but none of the sellers seem particularly trustworthy

Woop! The 751A is a solid solid radio with excellent performance and one loving ginormous caveat. i have the 271a, the 2 meter all mode version, and it suffers from the same problem

basically in the early 80s, Icom designers were idiot shitlords and put some of the code that runs the radio not in ROM, not in an EPROM, but in motherfuckin' battery backed RAM. Obviously now that they're tickling 20-30 years old a lot of the backup batteries poo poo out, and when that happens, the little memory board zaps out and your rig goes braindead. Pretty much the two ways around this are to make sure teh battery is new/good (you can swap the battery but it's soldered so you have to temporarily solder another battery to a couple +/- pads on the board, desolder the original battery, put in the new one and detach your temp battery) OR to get an upgraded memory board from a company called Piexx (still in business) that reverse engineered it and improved the design. Latter solution is maybe a hundo? But your 751 will last forever after that. So there's your big bargaining chip with that rig if you choose to go hunt em down.

i really should go work for icom at this point
i don't even understand this since ram had to have been more costly than an equivalent amount of rom

can i build a wideband omnidirectional receive antenna by sorta taking a log-periodic and rotating it through a circle through space

it would end looking like a cone made of solid rings, or maybe just rings of vertical elements

something like these except not horizontally connected

there's a hamfest in manassas next month that i might go to. i'm not sure it's really worht it, though, since i get basically no signal in my apartment as i live in a garden level (read: basement) of a rowhouse, so the brick blocks basically everything.

the good news it that the brick blocks basically everything including neighboring sounds, so i can run my tv and stereo basically as loud as i want. i guess i could figure out a way to set up a stealth antenna somewhere

if you're just going for technician, the arrl book is fine. read through it once and take a practice test or two and you'll pass without a problem. i can't comment for higher levels

Nice chodetenna. What is it about thicker conductors that gives the antenna a wider bandwidth anyways?
