Bad At Everything

Bundt Cake posted:

One thing that sucks is that tournaments are cool and Bellators sucked so bad probably no ones going to do them with good fighters anymore

Coker obviously knows what's up when it comes to tournaments, as evidenced by the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix that just about everyone was salivating over.

There's a time and a place for them, and I could see Bellator throwing them in the mix on occasion when the roster can support it, and not just dudes who were able to sell 300 tickets to the event at the local Indian casino.

Coker loves tournaments, in the conference call he said "I think a tournament can make sense, but it has to be the right time and the fighters have to be right" but the Bellator tournaments don't mean anything anymore, especially the 8000 attempts they made to get Rampage and Mo finally together in a cage. You need a worthwhile field and it needs to mean something. One tournament per year at most.

I think tournaments are great for legitimising new titles, and really good at giving some kind of stratification of talent to viewers when they don't know who anybody is, but if you keep on doing them you get rapidly diminishing returns and it ends up being 8 guys without wikipedia pages making GBS threads all over the canvas.

I recall part of the holdup was that Coker was trying to get Fedor back into the Grand Prix.

There were good money to be made by placing a bet on "other" winning the tournament.

It was a really bad idea because they spent tons of money they didn't have on guys like Barnett who didn't mean anything for their business and also felt they couldn't book major matches in the first round, which led to those matches not happening. It led to a really funny knockout filled show but that tournament was a major miscalculation. The first show was fun and all, but the other first round tournament show... not so good.

Edit: Oh and who can forget the bracketing mess when they announced it. Showtime had one bracket and Strikeforce put out another one and the opening matches all got changed around.

I can't be certain, but I imagine the major business decisions (at least cutting a huge bunch of dudes at once) would be mostly Spike TV and not Coker. In fact it's not clear if Coker is going to be much more than hypeman. I hope they let him make important decisions, but they certainly don't have to.

By the way, this leaves Bellator with just 11 Bantamweights. Their second smallest division is Middleweight with 18. I wouldn't surprised if Bantamweight was being slowly phased out, particularly if Warren fails to capture the belt.

There's lots of talk though about Coker-Bellator targeting the latino audience again, which could see more Mexican talent scouting, which could bring in more bantamweights.

Is tonight the greatest moment in Dominick Cruz's life?

No.

The greatest moment in my life was realizing that I didn't need a belt to be happy.
Seeing how Tito had like 30 pounds on his last opponent it would only be fitting if his next one had 30 pounds on him.

Kimbo vs Tito is the worst fight to make because Kimbo has no knees and Tito will absolutely take him down and submit him. I know the lunatics are running the asylum at Bellator these days but there's no way Get Tito Ortiz on a 2 Fight Winning Streak was at the top of the Scott Coker mission debrief. Rampage vs Kimbo is the best fight to make because Rampage only wants to knock people out while avoiding all other aspects of MMA & the two have a history together thanks to TUF. After that, the Kimbo vs Thompson rematch makes the most sense. Tito vs Kimbo is bad and I don't believe the rumor.

Why do all of the other organizations try to ape that part of the UFC? I couldn't give a gently caress less what the boss of the company thinks about the fights and none of them have half of the creepy charisma that Dana possesses. Bjorn always just made me laugh with his ugly baby face and murderous intentions. Scott Coker has the ugly baby face thing going too.

They should balance each other out beautifully.

Also, I had no idea he was in Bellator now. One FC seems like a much better fit somehow.

I hope Lashley brings the TNA World Title with him to the ring, and promptly gets destroyed by whoever he faces.

Either that or goes on a dominant streak, leading to him being Bellator and TNA Heavyweight Champion.

Edit: Is Josh Burns even vaguely good for a heavyweight, or is he just a warm body sent out there to make Lashley look good?

This is it folks, the end to Bellator's 2014 Summer Series, and since Bellator is moving to bigger, less frequent super-cards, probably the last Bellator Season thread. One last time, here are LobsterMobster's reasons to watch this card:

- PRELIM SUPPERWEIGHT ACTION, TWICE!!! :woop: :derp: :supaburn:
- Sosnovskiy is an Oplot guy, so Bellator continues to swagger-jack UFC
- REZ DOG, aka king of the Dadthletes (Athletes that look like dads)
- A Sad Wad and Psycho Karl are p. cool for Bellator dudes
- KID FIGHT, Bubba versus Poppies (Silly name fight!)
- Cooper's usually pretty good
- I like Koreshkov, even though he's not from Dagestan
- IN THE MARQUEE MATCHUP TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING (in the sense that it should have been made 10 years ago), THE BEST EVAH, PHIL BARONI TAKING ON KARO PARISYAN, DO YOU KNOW WHO HE IS, BRO?!

I know Bellator is really stupid, but this does look like a fun card. So use this as an appetizer for Lawler vs Brown tomorrow (Also Golovkin fights on Saturday, so go check out the boxing thread, that dude rules)
