Any recommendations for someone who wants to read some Venom? I'm trying the Cates run but it's not quite clicking for me - a bit too much focus on cosmic shenanigans/Reed Richards in a silly hat. Ideally, I'd want something more in line with the movies whole "twisted rom-com" factor. Should I just steel myself and dive into the 90s Black Suit SM poo poo?

Animal Man is relatively short and (IMHO) has all Morrison's best qualities with none of their worst

The 2000s Ultimate Spider-Man run is super long and has aged pretty well for the most part, it's really accessible to kids as they keep Peter a high schooler the whole time. Everyone loves Spider-Man.

Check out Ultimate Universe #1, that's the current Marvel Hype thing and for once it actually seems to be worth getting invested in

Woebin posted:Absolutely doesn't have to be cape poo poo or pop culture stuff, in fact recommendations outside that sphere seem preferable. We both already like Kate Beaton's stuff, I'll check the rest of what you're mentioning out. Thank you! At risk of going for the obvious choice, Alison Bechdel's work is excellent underground (at time of writing) stuff. Fun Home is a great tragicomic memoir and Dykes To Watch Out For is 20 years straight of lesbian political soap opera.
