I keep reading WicDiv hoping I'll fall in love with it and it's just not happening. I'm not sure what it is. I think his work on Loki and Young Avengers were better than either of those, really.

That's pretty much how I feel about WicDiv, in particular, but not Gillen's stuff as a whole. I think I need to start doing drugs to get it, but I feel like if I was going to do that, I should have done it before my relationship with a drug addict ended so I wouldn't have gotten angry when she wanted to get stoned instead of spending time together.

Man, that got weird.

So would you guys suggesting one series and following it to the end/the most recent issue before moving on to the next or reading several at the same time because of crossovers and such? I'm reading New 52 stuff, and I've heard they have a number of crossover arcs and I'm worried if I just focus on one series at a time I'll miss stuff/things will be over my head/etc.
Depends on what you're reading, really. Sometimes there's crossovers, but single issues will tell you what to get next in those cases and they'll be collected together in trades so it won't make a big difference. I would never advocate reading a series you're not otherwise interested in just to make sense of a crossover. If you need to do that, the writers failed miserably in their jobs.

No, his best work was on Birds of Prey before he realized he could work twice as fast tracing porn stars. His work on UFF was pretty egregious if I recall.

You can also start Hickman's Secret Warriors post-Secret Invasion, after they are introduced in one issue of Mighty Avengers. In fact, Secret Warriors also started out written by Bendis, but Hickman took it over relatively early in its run. Secret Warriors has been a big influence on the Agents of SHIELD TV show, and I've also recommended it as the best "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" story ever, if that helps sell it at all.
Hickman and Bendis co-wrote the start of the series with Hickman eventually doing it solo. I'm not entirely sure how much of the writing was Bendis.

That's about it, really.

Maybe his first couple appearances and then that bit towards the end of the original X-Factor team right before Muir Island Saga.

Endless Mike
Aug 13, 2003

Nah, he's right. Mutant Massacre was where Angel was crucified and his wings cut off, and in between then and Fall of the Mutants, Apocalypse turns him into Archangel. Only the X-Factor portions of FotM deal at all with Apocalypse, though. FotM isn't really a crossover in the classic sense as the three titles it takes place in (Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, New Mutants), all tell completely unrelated stories.

Endless Mike

Starlin cosmic stuff is annoying since it's spread across a dozen titles over 20 or 30 years since he'd like to have a one-issue appearance of Silver Surfer or Adam Warlock in some other random title he was writing up until he got the second Surfer volume going. I wish there was a reading order out there, but I feel like that would be a hell of a task.

I like that run, but I wouldn't throw someone who hasn't read any Batman into it. Even ignoring that just figuring out which comics to read when is a nightmare, it's just really, really not a first time reader thing.

I totally agree with Black Mirror, though. It barely matters at all that it's Dick, from what I recall of it.

I have been away from Marvel comics since about Siege. I just picked up Marvel Unlimited. I am looking for recommendations on where to start reading. I used to read Thunderbolts, Punisher: War Journal, Bru's Captain America (going to pick up where I quit buying trades), Moon Knight (the version where he was super crazy and hallucinating maybe Finch art). I used to dig Fraction, Bru, Hickman, and Aaron.

1. What are some of the best series that have come out since Siege?

2. I haven't read much X-Men. Where is a good place to start? Morrison's run? I'm not opposed to reading the likes of Excaliber, X-Factor, X-Force, and other offshoots. Anything specifically good in those runs or just read it all?

3. Looking over Fantastic four stuff. Do I want to start with Millar? maybe a little farther back?

4. Daredevil. I have honestly never read any of it. No clue, but interested. Any place to begin would be great.

Finally there is not any DC service like Marvel Unlimited is there?
1. Jason Aaron's Thor, Hickman's F4 and Avengers, Waid's Daredevil, Superior Iron Man

2. As others have said Morrison or (eh) Whedon. Remender's Uncanny X-Force, if you want to go way back, pretty much any Uncanny X-Men or New Mutants from the 80s, as well as early Excalibur

3. Millar's is not terrible, but it's also not too great and not really essential. Start Hickman's with Dark Reign: Fantastic 4, then find a reading order since it gets weird partway through. Go back to Waid's run, too, if you haven't read it.

4. Everyone else has this covered.

Edit: In the Ultimate one, he drowned in the giant tsunami, but now he's back and he and MJ broke up? I must be missing a series I think.
Peter Parker:
Ultimate Spider-Man 1-133
Ultimatum: Spider-Man Requiem 1-2
Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man (Vol 1) 1-15
Ultimate Spider-Man 150-160

Miles Morales:
Ultimate Fallout #1-6*
Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man (Vol 2) 1-28
Spider-Men 1-5**
Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man 1-12

There's some annuals and stuff in there too.

*Miles only shows up in UF #4, but the other issues deal with Peter's friends and family. There's other stories in each issue intended to set up the rest of the Ultimate Universe that was relaunching at that point.

**This runs roughly concurrent to UC:SMv2 11-15. There's no particular read order here.

Not really. There's several 90s and even 2000s books in there and there's DC books covering 75 years of publication. But some specific ideas: Black Panther, Luke Cage/Power Man (I'd even accept Power Man & Iron Fist here), Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers), She-Hulk (Byrne or Slott).

Well, the current run by Harvey Award Winning Humorist Chip Zdarsky is the only one that's really a detective story. And it's good! So go for it.

Alternatively, go with the original run by Steve Gerber that runs through Adventures Into Fear #19, Man-Thing #1, Giant-Size Man-Thing #4-5, Howard the Duck #1-33, Marvel Treasury Edition #12, and Marvel Team-Up #96. These are collected in a single Omnibus ($70 on Amazon, or probably all on Marvel Unlimited) or they seem to be collecting them in trades, of which the first is out. I imagine there will be two or three of those if they sell okay.

Yes and no. Well. Lots of gore, for sure. It is an Avatar comic, after all. As for the super powers, they're treated as the weapons and tools that they are, so there's lots of pages of battles that are just dudes using their eyebeam things from miles away.

Axis finished ages ago. Doesn't look like any of its effects will be around. Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl are both relaunching with the same creative teams. Loki is done, Superior Foes is done. You might like Howard the Duck. The Daredevil relaunch *might* be what you're looking for, also.
