While I'd need to refresh my memory for these specific examples, one reason for a lot of these shipped pairs is that at one point or another, they were depicted as working together while the sidekick of the pair was a minor. This feeds into the "gay people are pedophiles" stereotype and as such is reasonably to be avoided. The safest, most backlash-free approach is to establish new characters, and once their staying power is confirmed, depict their sexual orientation as co-incidental. If you're lucky, the character might not wind up in the hands of a homophobe who will promptly kill them off!
