I'm on the third of Caro's LBJ series, and as said above it's an amazing work that offers a lot of insight.

Caro's biography of Robert Moses is really fascinating as well. Moses's image was starting to crack before Caro's bio of him, but Caro did a lot to dispel any illusions the public had about the man.

In both cases, Caro does depict complex men very well. Both LBJ and Moses were ruthlessly effective and did a lot of positive things, but they destroyed lives (and in Moses's case whole neighborhoods) on a whim. Moses's goals were ultimately misguided and may have set NYC back, but there still remains the question of if another man would have done what Moses did if he hadn't been there.

I also started The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914. It's slow progress now that my classes resumed, but it's a intricate account of the factors that led to the war and faulty decision making. Serbian assassin guilds, Otto von Bismarck's capriciousness and so on.
