As you may already know, there are two ways to judge the value of a light novel: title length and covers. Lets begin by comparing title length to one good light novel and three bad ones:

code:
Inou-Battle in the Usually Daze
The Devil is a Part Timer
My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute
The "Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat
I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job
As you can see, it isn't long enough to reach LN title hell, but it's still basically a synopsis. (worth noting: The Devil is a Part Timer actually has a great title in the original Japanese: Hataraku Maō-sama)

The second is how close the cover of the books looks like pornography. The Devil is a Part Timer actually puts the main, male character on there in a central role that goes beyond angrily peaking out behind one of the women. If you caught the covers for Inou-Battle, you'll see that holding one of those in America might get you arrested.

So yea, even before it became an anime The Devil is a Part Timer was a pretty good story based around a funny observation (that Satan would actually make a good part timer) and a cast that appeals to a wide audience. "They have superpowers, but they never have battles??" doesn't have the same kind of hook, and the cast is designed around the taste of narrow group of viewers.

One thing I notice tho: this a tragic choice for Trigger, but if KoyAni picked it up people might actually get excited.

I would not be surprised at all if the series itself kept the same opening.

But yea, in anime most of the major creatives move around a lot, working on projects that are only one or two seasons. Terrible for job security, but cool for things like this.

For the record on The World is Still Beautiful: It's bumbling kidnappers catching the wrong character, realizing they hosed up, and then they discuss what to do with her. "Having our way with her" comes up and they make a dumb meta joke about how this means they can add service shots for the male viewers of the audience. And then minor character gets saved! There's also a rapey element to the rest of the episode, as it's naive princess alone in dangerous city type stuff.

It's not really that big of a deal.

So is there some kind of story behind Majin Bone? I find it difficult to believe that it was produced in 2014.

Toei is working on a whole lot of shows this season, and it's obvious that their animators are stretched thin. All their shows look worse than usual and Majin Bone is probably the least important to them. I haven't bothered to check but the staff is probably pretty good and could make something better, but since they're trying to get it done as quickly and cheaply as possible it ends up lovely.

Honestly, I'm enjoying the barely animated stuff Toei is putting out this season as it's kind of charming.

One thing I love is that anime/manga targeted at adults totally glorifies high school, like a Kyoani show or Chihayafuru, yet when a manga is actually targeted at teenagers we get something like Assassination Classroom or Beelzebub, where school is basically hell.

"Trap" is loving horrifying, as words go. Trans women face high rates of violence, homelessness, and suicide, and one of the contributing factors is that many people think they are playing some kind of trick on them by just existing. There are cases where people have gotten leniency for murdering trans women by saying they were driven temporarily insane by discovering their trans status.

But yea I guess I'm just a sjw lol.

Does Mushishi ever get any kind of arc or ongoing elements going? I watched a few episodes of the first season way back when, and it was really cool but without any ongoing story it didn't hook me that hard and I forget about it eventually.

I think you're kind of weird for not just enjoying each episode for their own thing, but yes, there are some actually really cool bits of continuity. This includes a recurring character that acts as a really good foil for Ginko, episodes that involve a greater society of mushi masters, and character pasts. It's also cool how you grow to expect mushi or Ginko to act in a certain way and the show plays with your expectations.

In the interest of being on-topic here's a list of shows from this season that are both pretty decent to watch and mostly fanservice-free:

Mekaku City Actors
Isshukan Friends
Hitsugi no Chaika
Ping Pong
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (unless fabulous burly men counts as fanservice)

The best part about this post is that, of the four of these I've seen, the only one I can recommend without caveats is Ping Pong. Hitsugi no Chaika rises above creepy moe poo poo but it's obvious that's the core of it's pitch. Jojo is pretty creepy about how it portrays women this season, including a highly sexual possession sequence. Mekaku is pretty tame for a shaft series but so was Nisekoi before it's swimsuit episode.

Like, this is kind of unavoidable. Like a huge chunk of anime is back-of-the-video-store straight up porn, and it used to be a much bigger part before late-night anime caught on. Stuff is much tamer now but most of these shows are still trying to capture the audience that used to rent that kind of thing. It's kind of surprising it's not worse.

The only way an anime fan can stay sane is by mocking the shows that get stupid, enjoying the shows that are cool, and not being a creep about our animated drawings to replace women. That balance works differently for different people but I for real think that we do a pretty good job.

I don't really recommend Capitan Earth yet, but I like that it doesn't over explain things and wouldn't want it to make them more clear. It's not necessarily relatable but I'm not sure if it would be if it was more cut and dry. The directing is really good too, so it manages to be evocative despite these weaknesses. I also like that it isn't going for a same thing happens every week plan like Star Driver.

There's a reason they're going for this kind of vagueness and I'm willing to wait to see what's on its mind.

That is really fast, especially if they did it all in one go instead of starting with the first episode back in October. For comparison, the Attack on Titan dub is airing right now, about half a year after the show ended, and that's pretty fast for a dub. The Devil Is A Part Timer dub is just getting promotion now, a year after it first came out, which is a more normal schedule.

With simulcasting becoming ubiquitous, it looks like more shows are looking to capitalise on the popularity of the original airing by getting this stuff out fast. At least with shows as popular as KlK or AoT we'll probably see more stuff like this.

e: I'm still surprised that Madoka never ran on Toonami. I guess Toonami depends too much on people who are channel surfing and can't afford to air a show that most people wouldn't even look at.

Aniplex only sells things at Japanese levels when they are literally selling you the same blu-rays they sell in Japan. Their regular disks are still expensive, but just not that bad. For example, the actual US disks for Madoka are $40

As an adult? No. Unless you really like either the whole sentai thing or magical girls thing it's kind of boring with tons of MotW filler. There are some fun moments and the animators love wacky cartoon faces (something sorely lacking in current anime) but that really isn't enough if you don't already have some kind of attachment.

Counterpoint: while I wouldn't recommend that anyone watch all 200 episodes, there's a lot of legit great stuff here. I went through it a few months ago using this guide from a now defunct site, that thankfully was in the internet archive, and it makes some really good choices, and points out some episodes that aren't essential but are worth watching. Start with the guide and depending on how much you enjoy it watch more or less.

While this is something you can enjoy now, there is a remake coming this summer that regular people should be able to watch all the way through.
