I didn't realize that site existed until you mention it: http://animationdissection.libsyn.com/ Looks interesting; I'm surprised Zorak hasn't publicized it more.

Yuri fans infuriated by the existence of yaoi (and yaoi fans infuriated by the existence of yuri, but there don't seem to be as many of those) are not the dumbest anime fandom thing (there are a lot of dumb anime fandom things), but they're pretty dumb.

Lucy Heartfilia was joking, of course, but it's a sentiment I've seen unironically elsewhere.

I believe it's one of the actual LN titles the generator was based on.

Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus...wait, this isn't D&D!

The main character being somehow "the weakest and the strongest" is oddly common; it's also seen in Index, Naruto, and Bleach, for instance. I suppose SAO deserves credit for never trying to pretend that Kirito was in any sense the weakest. In general, I think it makes for a better story if the main character starts out above or below average but nowhere near the weakest or strongest.

I took that as a swipe at other manga/anime that would actually have that scene rather than an indication of where this show is actually going. I quite liked the rest of the episode. Nike seems like an interesting character and I usually enjoy odd-couple stuff if it's done well.

Yeah, it was a pretty good first episode.

If they made this just slightly faster paced, dropped the incest, and made the outfits more interesting, this show could easily be good.

No, it would still be bad because the main character is bad.

I thought this was obvious enough when every female is giving him the anime equivalent of the sex eyes and he's totally oblivious to it (apparently forever? I suppose that's an upgrade from Kirito).

The difference between Tatsuya and Kirito is that, aside from being an MMO addict, Kirito's Mary Sueish traits tend to be actual positive qualities, while Tatsuya is creepy and inhuman in ways that the author inexplicably admires.

is this the part of the season thread where we moan about how bad everything is? It's like clockwork I swear

This year has been legitimately not-great so far, compared to the last couple years. On the other hand, it's probably not a significantly worse year for anime than, say, 2010, and there are still some watchable shows.

That doesn't fully explain it for me. I can understand why someone would want to be like Kirito, but I don't really get why a sane person would want to be like Tatsuya.

The real answer is: sane people don't.

I understand it up until the blandness, because in a way, he's not bland enough. There's a difference between having no distinctive personality traits and having things like shallow affect be your primary personality traits.

Convincing oneself that a lazy cliche has some cultural origin to justify it is a hallowed tradition among Western anime fans.

Only outstripped in popularity by saying "stories have no meaning, they're just words ", perhaps.

If there's an idea that catches on with a whole culture of people, and shows up repeatedly, it's silly to dismiss it.

The fallacy generally lies in the bolded words. Otaku culture is not synonymous with Japanese culture.

I'm not saying there's never a specific cultural reason, just that this type of argument tends to get overused as a justification for bad writing.

I'm not saying mistaking something that's good writing in its cultural context for bad writing can't exist (witness Confused Matthew's review of Spirited Away, where he criticizes it because various youkai-related things "make no sense"). It's just a lot less common.

XboxPants posted:

There's are reasons certain kinds of shows and certain kinds of characters are popular among Japanese otaku, and it's not "a wizard did it".

The reasons don't necessarily make it good writing; they're often as simple as "people copy from better shows."

Anime isn't allowed to have any characters over 20 unless they're grizzled old veterans so they just contort themselves in knots justifying having a 17 year old lawyer.

That was arguably one of the least dumb things in Wizard Barristers. In the episode where they go to America, it's noted that there are no American lawyers as young as her, reflecting the fact that American law schools, unlike Japanese ones, are graduate schools. This is the only thing about real-world law the show gets right. :spergin:

Yeah, to be fair the "English" title as created by the author does actually mean the total opposite of what it's supposed to mean. But there's a difference between correcting grammar and changing noun choice. I mean if he says that in the fictional world he created, these particular monsters are called "titans" then he kinda has final say on that, even if it was a stupid choice. It's not really the role of the translator to correct mistakes in the story.

Them being called "titans" makes sense, since they're obviously inspired by the painting Saturn Devouring His Son.
