Jojo's: Stardust Crusaders - Looks great, has a step up in animation, and is a faithful adaptation of my favorite part of Jojo. Nothing to complain about here, except that the OP isn't here yet.

Mushi-shi
- It's more Mushi-shi. Like, it literally feels like they just kept making it but forgot to air it for eight years. Still as chill as ever.

One Week Friends
- A bit of a cliche (or rather, directly stolen from Adam Sandler) and unrealistic premise, but gently caress it, it hit in my moe strike zone for some reason. I'll give it a few more episodes.

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou - Kind of slow to start, but I'll give it a three episode test to see if the comedy holds up a bit better once it's settled into form.

Kenzen Robo Daimidaler - The writing is terrible, the art is crap, the MC is literally a sex offender, and the mecha design is so lazy I would swear they were doing it ironically, except they somehow seem to be trying to play it off with a straight face. I don't know what to think. It's the stupidest thing I've ever seen, but oddly amusing in how dumb it is.

Avengers Disc Wars - Did I say Kenzen Robo was the the stupidest thing I've ever seen? I take it back. It only really takes one look to see all the reasons this is terrible. What's weird is how they have just enough minor characters namedropped to make you think that there's a Marvel fan somewhere on staff putting these things forward, but he wasn't able to stop the rest of it. Maybe they just had one guy consulting wikipedia and describing characters to the artists without letting them see pictures?

-I had to pause at this point because Dr. Strange appeared and I was laughing too hard to type.

I heard a rumor that the reason they didn't include Ant-Man is because they were worried about concerns over his having beat his wife 30 years ago. Personally I'm more concerned about the fact that Tony Stark doesn't have a moustache. That's criminal.

But seriously, if ever there was an example of "so bad it's good", this is it.

Kanojo ga flag wo orareta: I'd had hopes for this since the concept sounded interesting, but the writing felt a little weak to take advantage o the premise. I'll give it a few episodes to see how it goes.

Puchimasu !!: I've never really liked the idolmaster franchise, but this is the least offensive form I've seen as well as one of the better paced short anime out there.

Akuma no Riddle: Didn't really do it for me. The characters seemed overdone somehow and the premise was kind of wishy-washy. There's still a chance it could improve, though.

Hitsugi no Chaika: Surprisingly good. The world was a bit generic in the way fantasy anime tend to be, but I like all the main characters a lot.

Mangaka-San to Assistant-San to: I actually kind of liked the 4-koma of this but I just don't know that it works animated. Gags that were okay for a second get dragged out for ten. Also sexual harassment.

Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin: Surprised by how good this was. Hadn't expected that much for how many settings they crammed into the premise, but was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. Might be my top pick after obvious stuff like Jojo and Mushishi.

Seikoku no Dragonar: I dropped the manga of this because I found it generic and boring; I haven't seen any evidence that the anime version will be any better.

Captain Earth: It hasn't really hooked me yet, but I like the mecha design, the astronauty theme, and the ridiculously overblown gattai scene. I'll give it a chance.

Finally finished up the first ep or two of the rest of the series I was going to check out.

Black Bullet - Premise is fairly generic, and there's a lot of possibility for things to go terribly here, but the first episode seemed well enough put together for me to stick with it and see how it goes.

Brynhildr in the Darkness - I read the manga for a bit ages ago, I remember it being okay I guess? Kind of like Elfen Lied if nobody was a psychotic murderer/incontinent, etc. It didn't really hold me then, though. We'll see if the anime does any better. In any event, it's already spawned this, so it's a success in my book.

Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun
- Hmmm, I'd watched this hoping for an entertaining trainwreck of unfinished animation, and while there's a lot of that, I feel like it isn't quite enough to fit into the "so bad it's good" category. Gonna drop it. The mecha designs that showed up at the end were actually pretty nice, though.

Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu Ka? - I would have sworn this was done by all the same people who did Kiniro Mosaic, but looking at their ANN articles, I'm not seeing any of the same names on the production side. Maybe it's just because one of the characters in this looks the same and has the same voice as one in Kiniro Mosaic.

Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san - It's cheap and dumb, but it's also 3 minutes. I'll watch it if I remember but if I forget I won't be broken up about it.

M3 - Sono Kuroki Hagane - This show contrasts well with Black Bullet. They both have cliche premises and uninteresting characters, but Black Bullet's execution was good enough to keep me coming back. This one is the opposite.

Mahouka - I normally have a guilty pleasure for the overpowered protagonist wish fulfillment fantasy LN stuff. I loved SAO, Accel World, Index, etc. I usually enjoy a good infodump of techobabble, too. That really says something considering how boring I find this show. None of the characters are particularly interesting or likable, the world somehow manages to feel both overdone and not fleshed out enough at the same time, it's so chuunibyou I don't know how anyone making it kept a straight face. I can even overlook brother/sister romance stuff if there are other reasons I like a show, but the one here manages to slide right into "kinda creepy" territory in a way few things ever have. It sells like hotcakes over there despite this, so maybe there's something good to it down the line? I think I'll put it on hold and come back if I hear good things about it later.

Mekakucity Actors - Shaft showed with Nisekoi that they could get me watching something with the mother of all cliche stories by power of their Shafty direction alone. Now they've shown they can do the same thing even if I don't really know what's going on in the first place. I'd been skeptical of this from the time I heard "based on vocaloid songs", but I enjoyed ep 1 more than I thought I would. I guess I'll give it a shot.

No Game No Life - I've only seen ep 1 so far, so maybe it jumps off the deep end later, but so far I like what I've seen. The premise is stupid as hell, but the direction and the characters seem interesting, and there's a lot of room for interesting mindgame-type fights to be done here. Taken at ep 1 alone, the main characters even seem to have an extremely rare close sibling relationship that doesn't involve stupid incestuous romantic or sexual tension. (The total opposite of Mahoka) I hope things stay that way, but I'll probably be disappointed. Watching it with caution.

selector infected WIXOSS - I've never particularly liked card game/toy battle series, but this one seems well put together, and it's broadcasting "I'M GONNA BE LIKE MADOKA, TERRIBLE THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN" so hard that I can't help but give it a watch for now.

Soul Eater Not! - I haven't watched/read Soul Eater in goddamn forever and didn't know what to expect going into this, but if this is really just a SoL show set in the Soul Eater universe I could totally get in on that, I think. God willing Excalibur makes an appearance somewhere down the line, that was the only part of that series I really loved.

Knights of Sidonia - I'd put this off for weeks from being put off of it by the uncanny valley CG character design and remembering having trouble following some of the author's other manga. Was really pleasantly to find this right in the middle of my strike zone. Good hard SF background, a relatively interesting protagonist, and a talking bear. Is that just a thing with this author? I seem to remember one in Biomega, too.

Atelier Escha & Logy - If I was more familiar with the game series I might have the patience to put up with this, but it's generic anime fantasy garbage, and I think I'll watch Chaika for that instead.

When these sorts of things come up in court, the issue generally winds up hanging on whether there's artistic merit to the nudity/what have you. I'd argue that most mediums, including film/TV, are generally pretty good about that for the most part. They stick in a sex scene, there's something they're trying to say. US film media in particular is so worried about losing income from an R rating that they'll bend over to avoid it if they can.

Anime is just the opposite. The majority of shows these days pander exclusively to Japanese otaku, and they lap this poo poo up. If you flip through any Japanese language anime blog, you'll find they go nuts over dumb hot springs/beach episodes and the like. You watch anime on Niconico, the comments take note every time there's even a single frame of a panty shot. What you won't find is a single voice in opposition.

So the studios actively seek to cram more of this content in, hoping to sell more $80 DVDs, even when it's needless or even detrimental to the story. That makes a lot of series less than they could have been, and further feeds the fanbase while driving off the average consumer who isn't interested in softcore porn of animated middle schoolers.

On a personal level, I don't really give two shits how many naked boobs they toss in, there have been plenty of shows that manage to be decent while also having heavy fanservice. But I do think that the drive to include it on the part of the creators can at times weaken the work as a whole, that they're essentially peddling softcore porn to an audience that's increasingly creepy, and that it's awkward for me to recommend something to a friend if it's fanservice-heavy. It just makes the industry and the fanbase more skeevy as a whole and makes me embarrassed to be associated with it.

At some point it stops being putting something sexual to appeal to a certain audience in an otherwise nonsexual work, and starts just being softcore porn, aiming to be appreciated in ways other than artistically.

Having advanced No Game No Life to episode 3, I'm gonna watch it to the end. I'm laughing my rear end off, all the characters so far have turned out to be much more interesting than I expected them to be at first glance, and the way they've been developing the games has been really interesting. There's not near as much fanservice as some people were saying there was, either.

My only real regret is that they seem to have given up on the gag of the princess being forced to fall in love with the protagonist and bashing her head against a wall when she can't resist it. They got a full episode of traction out of it already, but it was clever and funny enough that I'm a little sad if they just forget it at this point.

Right. Hey how about that Konojo ga Flag show? Is it worth watching?

I was kind of down on the first episode, but by the end of the second I think I've gotten enough of a hang of it that I think I'll give it a shot. The tempo is super weird and it feels like they're packing too much into too little time, but once you get used to it the character comedy can be kinda funny.

Just don't expect too much.

Wait...is that Fate/Sword Dancer(or whatever it was) with Ilya as Archer?
There was an anime about that doujin!?

Sadly Fate/Kaleid Liner is a totally different thing. That one fight scene was super good, but the rest of the series was mediocre at best. It apparently did well enough to get a second season, though.

On a completely unrelated note, is there interest in a Kan Colle/Kantai Collection thread? It's pretty quickly occupying the same status as Touhou in Japan, and that's got a thread here already. It's also got like three or four manga series, and an anime coming this summer, I think?

I guess I'm only hesitant because a mechanic of the original game is that characters' clothing gets torn as they take damage.

You know what Strike Witches did for WWII aces and fighter planes? KanCole kinda does the same thing for battleships.

Pretty much this. The moderate success of Strike Witches and strong success of Girls und Panzer has left the message among production companies that WWII military stuff + Moe girls = guaranteed hits, and Kan Colle is backing it up.

Basically it's just a low-budget browser game DMM.com put up a year ago and had it succeed beyond their expectations. As a game it's...okay, I guess? Kind of like the "catch em all" element of Pokemon, the raising mechanics of Puzzles and Dragons, mixed with lightweight non-interactive combat. I gather it was somewhat revolutionary over there though, as a F2P game that didn't actually require tons of money to be put into it to do well. (unlike Idolmaster's mobile game and a lot of Puzzle and Dragon-likes)

Anyway, it's hit the same niche that Touhou did, having a cast of 100+ characters that are only loosely characterized in the original game, letting doujin creators create their own memes and stories. The big difference is that it's owned by Kadokawa instead of being one guy's doujin project, so they're pushing to milk the money out of it in every media.

Also late to the Patema Inverted party, but that was an excellent piece of film. Only complaints are that the villain was a little contrived and they could have used a little bit better exposition at the end. I figured it out well enough, but I could see how somebody could misunderstand it. Especially the manufactured sky.

On another note, it's too bad the No Game No Life thread kinda turned to poo poo and had to get gassed, since it's entering the awesome mindfuckery arc.
