I'm gonna miss you GOM. Hell I already do. I'm collecting funds to donate to a charity that would mean something to him. If anyone cares to donate you can PayPal me at my name@gmail. If you don't know my name send me a PM. I'll give it a week or so then more than likely match the donations and send them on. I'm away from my home so if someone could please link the charity I would appreciate it.

Soulex posted:Would anyone mind writing a bio about him? Some of us never met him before, and would like to know a little bit more about GOM. I'm piecing together information through posts, but would really like to know who he was. GOM was a punk. He grew up in the 70s listening to the Clash. He played soccer growing up and eventually into college. He went to school in Oklahoma and really didn't like it. He ended up going to law school. He became a very successful attorney; by suing other attorneys. He lived in Coronado just outside of San Diego for the past ten years or so. He started following Chelsea, as many American plastics did, when Fox started showing games. After he couldn't really play any more he got into officiating. He started at the high school level and eventually ended up coaching at the collegiate level. After enjoying success as an attorney he decided to open up his own practice a few years back. I know it was stressful on him but he really loved the challenge of it. A few years ago he suffered his first heart attack. He was supposed to have died then. But he didn't. He literally posted from the ER which owned. He loved sailing. He had a group of friends that would sail together and enjoy booze and cigars. He worked his rear end off to recover from his first heart attack and within a matter months was back on the pitch officiating. He wanted to do a sort of mini your after his first heart attack to spend time with some close friends he had lost touch with or grown slightly apart from over the years. We were supposed to meet up in Austin for a drink. Sadly that never happened. Unfortunately he had a second heart attack a few years later. Which he also survived. And also posted from the ER. Again. From what I could tell he wasn't working as much after this one. He spent a lot of time cooking and was about to move from Coronado. He was rueful about it. I'm not sure what happened but I'm guessing he probably had another heart attack. I one asked him if he ever felt any sort of regret or of he felt he sold out; going from a punk loving anti establishment youth to an immensely successful attorney. His answer was "nope". He was a really cool guy. He was married and raised a talented and cool step son. He was very proud of both of them. I'm sure they feel the same way about him.

We've had just over $280 in donations to date. Thank you so much for your generosity . I'll be matching that so we are around $560. I've decided I'll match up to $500. Another $220 would be wonderful. A grand would basically pay for two officials to be trained and would be a fitting tribute to a man we respected and enjoyed spending time with. Lots of little donations would be great.

I've gotten a butt load of donations over the past few days along with a lot of really kind words. Y'all are good people. I'll give an update with totals a little later since I'm finally back at home now. I think I will set a date of next Tuesday before I send out the lump check. If I get anything after that I'll just send it in as I get it.

You are all wonderful people. There are a few of you that I am unable to match names up to usernames. If you would like to remain anonymous, that is cool with me, but if you would like for your username to be known please shoot me an email. I am very proud to be a part of a great group of posters, keep them coming!!!

A little update First of all the donations keep coming in, and we now stand $2,188.21 from 47 different posters from literally all over the world. Incredible! My plan is to put together a list of everyone that has donated, along with where they are from along with the check to NISOA. I am also going to write a letter to GOM's family letting them know how much was raised, where it went to, and who has donated and where they are from. It's amazing seeing how diverse a group of people from all over the world he has affected enough to make the effort to donate. I think it's truly incredible. I will ask if you haven't already done so in your paypal note to shoot me an email with either your location and/or username. If you would prefer to remain anonymous that is totally cool too, but if you are comfortable with giving me where you are from it will be pretty neat I think. I am away from my house and office for the week but will be checking in periodically with updates. Keep up the good work, I am collecting until March 17th! The check will go out the morning of the 18th. Here is a list of the places I know of where money was sent: Wales New Jersey France Oklahoma Maryland NYC England Greece Uruguay England Massachussets England Wales California England Illinois England Wales England Switzerland New Jersey Georgia North Carolina Germany England Texas Scotland England Norway Canada England Canada Texas Ireland England England England Canada Edit: So many of you have offered your thanks and condolences to me personally and thank you all very much, it means a lot. I can say with 100% certainty were the roles reversed GOM would be doing this for me. Suqit fucked around with this message at 01:46 on Mar 9, 2014 |

We have now hit 80 donations for a grand total of $3,279.49 I will accept donations today up until midnight GMT and will send out a check tomorrow. If someone would like to donate but does not have the funds right now, please email me and we can work something out to have your donation included in the total. I plan on sending a list of donators with the check, and will be sending a copy of the same to GOMs family to let them know just how many people care enough to participate as well as where the donations are coming from. I know many of you are concerned about anonymity, and as such I will be sending in first names with last initials only to both parties. If you would rather remain completely anonymous, please shoot me an email and I will replace your first name and last initial with anonymous in both lists. Good job everyone, you should all be proud of what we have done here.

There are still a few hours left, but it looks as if the final count is: 82 donations for $3,344.75 Thank you everyone for your extremely generous donations. I will probably include some of the many kind words shared by this thread in my letter to GOM's family. I have been in brief contact with his son and will let him know everything you have all done for him. Thank you also to everyone for your very kind words to me. I know had I not volunteered to do this, others would have stepped up, and as I said before; were it me that were the unlucky one I am 100% positive that GOM would have done what I am doing now for me, he was that kind of man. It was nice to have something else to focus on that was positive while the shock and surprise of his passing abated and now I'm sad, but ultimately happy he led a wonderful life and proud that strangers on the internet from literally all over the world were able to do something so incredibly meaningful and kind in his memory. I'm not sure where some donations came from, but from everything I know, this is how wide reaching and far one man's impact was. Wales New Jersey France Oklahoma Maryland NYC England Greece Costa Rica England Massachussets England Wales California England Denmark Illinois England Wales England England Switzerland England New Jersey Georgia North Carolina England Germany England Texas Scotland England Norway Kentucky Canada England Canada Texas Ireland England England England Canada Australia Ohio Oklahoma England Poland New Zealand England England England Arizona England Washington Australia England Australia England England England Canada England North Carolina Switzerland Scotland Florida England Nebraska Australia England Wisconsin England England Japan England Sweden Nearly $3,500. It's just amazing to me. Well done everyone.

Friends, The check to the NISOA went out today along with a list of the posters who contributed (first name last initial and location). I also sent a letter to his son with whom I've been in contact with briefly over the past few weeks explaining just how we knew his father and how much he meant to all of us and what we have done in his name. You all did a very good thing with this. It was not my idea to donate to a charity nor did I choose it. I'm sorry I don't remember exactly who's ideas these were but all the kudos to you and every single person who committed the time, effort and resources to make this happen. This can be a cynical and dark place at times, but it's overwhelmingly touching to know that we can come together when it matters most and do one thing so positive. Well done y'all.
