AKA just keeping it warm for The Ninth Layer, aka that's a lot of parentheses and commas From to Well here we are past the dog days of boxing and ready to get into the meat of the money fights again. The year in pay per view kicks off when Canelo Alvarez tries to reclaim his mantle as the next big thing in boxing by taking on a very dangerous fighter in Alfredo 'Perro' Angulo. Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley got the wins they needed to set up one of the biggest rematches in years. Marcos Maidana stopped the Adrien Broner hype train and is set for a massive payday-albeit in a likely futile effort-against the one of the only two real cash cows left in the sport (the other being Manny), Floyd Mayweather. Continuing the theme of redemption, Miguel Cotto bounced back from losses to Mayweather and Austin Trout by hooking up with Freddie Roach and crushing Delvin Rodriguez and was rewarded with Sergio Martinez in Madison Square Garden. But not the same Sergio Martinez who once destroyed Paul Williams with one punch. The one who robbed Martin Murray in Argentina and has been dealing with injury and ducking Gennady Golovkin. With Golden Boy and Top Rank Promotions having isolated their fighters onto the Showtime or HBO banner, the truly intriguing (Pacquiao/Mayweather, Garcia/ Bradley, Miguel Cotto/Canelo) matchups remain temporarily out of reach but business carries on. But perhaps even more interesting than the known is talking about the unknown. Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. bounced back from a hellacious, totally self-inflicted, 18 months to defeat hard-charging but clearly over matched Brian Vera. This opens up the door for all sorts of possibilities at 160 (lol) through 175 but each potential opponent has their own unique hurdle. Carl Froch will rematch George Groves May 31st and needs to win big to be a draw outside of the UK. Gennady Golovkin pulled out of an April 26th bout with Andy Lee following the sudden death of his father and, regardless, is more likely to be fighting next in Monte Carlo than Las Vegas due to the paucity of big name takers. Andre Ward tied up Edwin Rodriguez last November in his comeback after a 14 month layoff due to shoulder surgery but the consensus pound for pound number 2 fighter might have to be content humbling brave newcomers while waiting for JCC Jr/Froch /Golovkin or perhaps one of the emerging light heavyweights to get another signature fight. Lower on the weight scale but dealing with similar problems is Guillermo Rigondeaux. The two time Cuban Gold medalist boxed circles around Nonito Donaire and was forced to wait until December to do the same to Joseph Agbeko. With less than fan friendly styles Ward and Rigondeaux are two fighters who have the reverence of those who post on boxing scene and bad left hook comments but-by design-lack the go the war style which has made favorites out of Ruslan Provodnikov, Lucas Matthyse and Mike Alvardo among others. One division which used to have this problem was the light heavyweight division where Jean Pascal, Chad Dawson and Bernard Hopkins engaged in a series of bouts more amusing for the press conferences than the fights. All of that changed when Adonis Stevenson knocked Chad Dawson out with one punch in Montreal in June and has been no less impressive wiping out Tavoris Cloud and Tony Bellew since. In the same time frame Sergey Kovalev annihilated Nathan Cleverly in Wales and did the same to Ismail Silakh on the under card of Stevenson-Bellew. Both being HBO fighters seems to make a clash inevitable but things have a funny way of working themselves out. On the other side of the coin B-Hop remains B-Hop and is amazingly a champion at 48 albeit known much more for excitement outside the ring than inside. Of course the money division was once the heavyweights but that has not been the case in a long time. Vitaly Klitschko has stepped away from boxing to lead the opposition (government?) in Ukraine. Whatever you may think of his style his courage is nothing short of awe-inspring. Godspeed, Dr. Iron Fist. His brother Wlad continues fighting dudes in Germany because no one really gives a poo poo in America. He’s also engaged to Hayden Panettiere which really surprises people who didn't know that before. I think I'm more excited for Cotto/Martinez than Floyd's cinco de mayo show. Pac/Bradley 2 is going to be huge. Excellent OhPizzle.

Haha serves me right for taking so long. I have a pretty comprehensive top 20 list that I still want to get out there, maybe in another thread. I had some awards written up too but it's probably a little past their expiration date. I'm hoping I can find a bar in San Francisco showing the Canelo fight. The place I usually would go to around here is saving their money up for the Mayweather fight in May :/ Canelo-Angulo should be a good scrap between two game guys who are both in a bit of a do-or-die situation. This isn't really Pacquiao-Rios where we all knew who was going to come out looking good. Angulo's a hard hitter and he's aggressive as gently caress (maybe a lttile too aggressive for his own good). He's a better pressure-fighter than anybody Canelo has ever fought. I would be hard-pressed to bet against Alvarez, and my feeling is that he'll come out looking sharp and focused right from the opening bell, putting some early hurt on Perro's fragile eye from the outside. I'm just not convinced that Canelo has the defensive chops or reflexes of a guy like Erislandy Lara, and he's been hurt by smaller guys before.

Canelo-Angulo is playing in movie theaters if you can't/don't want to find a bar. It's like $15 but totally worth it to watch the entire card on a huge screen.

This is what i did for canelo-Floyd. To anyone wondering about this I would highly recommend it to shelling out the money for the ppv at home or :files: Most of the energy was coming from the Canelo supporters (other than some guy yelling "lets go money team!" in between rounds) so even if Angulo isn't a big draw per se the atmosphere should be live. It's pretty disappointing that only Golden Boy does these events and really goes to show how dependent Showtime as a centerpiece of its programming whereas boxing is really ancillary to hbo's lineup.

Canelo had to pay Angulo 100k to move the weight limit up to 155. There will be additional fines if he weighs in over 168 this morning (no such penalty for Angulo).

Molina-Charlo is off due to Molina apparently being a pedophile or somesuch, but that probably wasn't going to be much of a fight anyway. Canelo's brother Ricardo's fight will now move up to the televised PPV card.

There's already talk of canelo moving up in weight for the Cotto - Martinez winner, tbh I don't think either fight is realistic due to both of them being more or less HBO guys these days.

Not too familiar with Angulo other than that he has heavy hands, but he's real slow. I see why he was picked for a comeback fight. Canelo was throwing hard shots in that first round.
