It's incredibly hard to locate down aircraft when you have no idea where it is. It's hard to find them when you have an idea of where it went down, especially when there is water involved. A few years ago a plane from the airfield I work at went down with two experienced pilots, no comms, just gone. Even though they knew within a thirteen square mile area of where they were doing maneuvers it took them almost two months to find the bird in the water.

Did they work out why?

Because blowing up a plane of irrelevant people in the middle of nowhere sends a STRONG message. Especially when you don't step forward and claim responsibility for the attack.

Jesus Christ, I don't know if people are this stupid or if terrorists are that stupid. There are so many better targets people could blow up / attack to cause fear that I never got the idea of bombing a plane. The 9/11 hijack though, that was a brilliant use.

Someone mentioned earlier the pilot only had like 18 hours under his belt too. If that's true, maybe not a good idea to have him take such a long flight.

No. From what I remember some guy flew up when a plane hit a pack of turbulence once and broke his neck and landed covered in his own poo poo. Maybe I imagined this, but I remember hearing / reading this somewhere.

I thought it was 18,000 hours?

I'm not so good at reading so if it was 18k yeah. No idea, probably plane bullshit or aliens :tinfoil:. I'm not surprised China has no idea where the plane is though. I'd guess they have a sub par radar system for travel that has highly underpaid people working it and is built with parts made in China.

Meaning cheap lovely materials.

Pilot error. They were doing a certain maneuver too low for their altitude. From what I was told they hit the water so hard it pushed the engine into the copilot in the backseat.

There is such a thing as a belted toilet, they are actually pretty common...

in small private jets. It's kind of like a regular seat but it lifts up and has small chemical toilet underneath for emergencies. And seriously, emergencies, there is at best a small privacy divider.

It seems the most likely explanation at this point. Either the aircraft exploded at high altitude or it was diverted off course before crashing.

Shouldn't an explosion have triggered the beacon though? Unless it was destroyed, i guess?

China actually has pretty decent radar and ATC for the most part. Not everywhere though, and the countries south of China, not so much either. I've had many flights over Myanmar where we couldn't get anyone in the entire country to answer us on the radio.

Interesting that looking at Flight Tracker, it looks like they had already climbed to a metric flight level, so it's hard to believe they weren't in some some of Chinese radar environment.

No good guesses as to what happened, but I think it had to have been catastrophic, as in came apart midair.

Shithouse Dave posted:

If a crash is violent enough, the beacon transmitter gets ripped off of the airframe mounted antenna.

I am not disappointed I lost the PGA Championship. Nope, I am not.
As an armchair aviation enthusiast, I've learned there's lots of reasons other than midair breakup that could cause a plane to crash without a distress call, but they are very unlikely.

So, looks like midair breakup, and those are usually caused by either a horrendous maintenance oversight (like the elevator falling off), or by missiles/bombs.

Those poor Chinamen and Mugatu employees.

They just wrapped up the latest press conference, first there were two stolen passports, now there are at least 4 and they are reviewing the entire manifest.

All indications point to some sort of catastrophic failure at cruising altitude since there were not even automated messages from the plane so there isn't looking good terrorism wise.

Malaysia isn't a "3rd world" country, it's a relatively wealthy country and the flight was going from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, two major world economic centers and as had been mentioned a few times in media reports Beijing passport control is extremely strict, it would be incredibly dumb to fly into Beijing on a stolen passport with any intention of getting in, you would probably have better odds getting in the US.

You'd think if it were terrorism, some group would've claimed it by now. But then I looked up the airline and there was a mysterious hijacking in 1977 in which there's no actual information available about who was responsible for it. :iiam:

Cthulu Carl posted:

Also, I was under the impression that people do dry runs just to get on the same plane and map out how they're going to bring it down in the future. There's no point in doing a rehearsal hijacking in which the hijackers themselves die, because then they can't pass on any information.
