The kernel of truth in this is that if people knew their waiters were being paid well they'd be much less likely to feel obligated to tip them. Of course that would mean a welcome return to the idea of gratuity being a way to reward exceptional service.

You'd think that because our state allows tips on top of minimum wage, that it alone would've already undercut tipping culture to be more about quality instead of just an institutionalized thing. It hasn't really been the case. In that way, I don't think a minimum wage increase alone will change anything.

I'd rather see tips go away completely, anyway.

For those out of the Seattle loop, Ballard is the north-western, largely white-ethnic enclave, largely investment-class contained in the new City Council seat #6 to be elected next in 2015 (along with every other seat thanks to the new 7-2 district charter amendment).

It's easy to adopt that when you have the vast majority of your employees as temporary. If it wasn't already easy enough to absorb, she could just shave off a few hours a week and they'd be making the same money every month before the increase.

A business owner who doesn't make money by their employees showing up is an idiot or a saint. If she is a remotely rational business person (which she apparently is given the size of her business) then cutting hours would be foolish, because there aren't any pointless hours being worked. She is making money from her employees working.

I think I see where you're getting at, but I still doubt she is being genuine in her beliefs. A path exists for her business to come out even or ahead while her employees come out unchanged. This probably applies to other businesses more than hers, since she is so reliant on her employees, but that doesn't mean she can't pursue it.

Did they define who counts as a big or small business? The chart suggests it's any business with less than 500 employees, which is much more than I consider "small" (should be more like 50). I'm not aware of any existing laws defining who is big or small, so I'm pretty suspicious they snuck in some wording that lets a few big businesses pretend they're small.

Also, would it kill someone to make a 24 hour restaurant north of Seattle? Everett only has two (A Denny's and a Memo's) and Marysville only has Don's, which is better than Denny's but not by a lot.

I shop at Winco because it's the cheapest, but if I could afford it I'd definitely buy fresh meat and certain deli items elsewhere. Winco's beef tastes a bit lackluster compared to Safeway's, and they don't have like a real deli either, just a selection of "whatever we feel like throwing together" salads, pastas, and sandwiches that the employees all buy up during their lunch break.

Yes! Do it! Kill bertha! :unsmigghh:

quote:

Two Republican senators Monday introduced a bill that would shut down the Seattle waterfront tunnel project and examine how to make the Alaskan Way Viaduct a viable alternative.

Proposed by senators from Ferndale and Spokane, the bill would stop spending on the project and tunnel machine Bertha, which stopped in December 2013 after boring only about 1,000 feet of a two-mile long project.

“I have no confidence that the Department of Transportation can bring this project in on time and under budget,” said Sen. Michael Baumgartner, R-Spokane, in prepared remarks.

“Bertha was sold on a faulty promise of controlled cost and engineering predictability,” added Baumgartner, the bill’s chief sponsor of SB 5646. “The project has neither.”

The bill comes as a review board recently determined that the state should pay contractors for dealing with groundwater flows at the launch pit in Sodo where the tunnel machine started its work.

Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, said in prepared remarks that “I have great concern that this project is headed down a path that will lead to massive cost overruns.”

Smart people hate the 99 tunnel because it's putting a germ-infested bandaid on an infected wound. The viaduct was a horrible monster that should never have been built so its good that it's coming down, but 99 should have stayed as a surface level street. Look up the concept of induced demand; the tunnel is only going to make congestion worse. It's a huge waste of money.

We could have spent all that money on subway tunnels, which I think would have really overwhelming support. The people in charge of the light rail construction really know what they are doing (tooting my own horn here), so we could use a lot of the same principles for designing the subway system. The geography of Seattle and its Urban Villages makes a municipal subway system an incredibly useful and efficient way to move people around. It would be cost effective, we could remove unnecessary roads, and a whole lot more small businesses, restaurants, and shops would thrive.

They better approve it reaching everett this time.
