Couldn't find a thread for this lovely little show in the forum archives, so here we go! I'm currently watching the anime, but I guess we can use this as a catch-all thread for both the anime and manga.

From teh Wikipedias:

quote:

Nisekoi follows high school student Raku Ichijou, the son of a leader in the yakuza faction Shuei-Gumi, and Chitoge Kirisaki, the daughter of a boss in a rival gang known as Beehive. They unexpectedly meet when Chitoge hops a wall and knees Raku in the face. After she runs off, Raku realizes he has lost his pendant which was given to him by his childhood sweetheart with whom he made a secret promise. After discovering Chitoge is a new transfer student in his class, he forces her to help him look for the pendant. During the search, they begin to dislike each other.

Upon returning home, Raku learns that the Shuei-Gumi and Beehive gangs have agreed to settle their feud by pairing their leaders' children. Raku learns that his girlfriend-to-be is none other than Chitoge. For the next three years, they must pretend to be in a relationship to maintain peace between the gangs. This turns out to be quite a challenging task, not only because of their hatred for one another, but also because Raku has a crush on another schoolmate, Kosaki Onodera, whom he secretly wishes was the girl who bears the key to his pendant. Various developments complicate the situation, including [SPOILERS]

It progresses about as fast as you'd expect a harem show to. But they introduce another haremette! :D :stare:

So, what does everyone think of this show? Personally, I think it's somewhat amusing, though I'm worried we'll settle into "nothing loving happens" territory a little too soon...

I do recommend reading through the manga, mainly because Marika is awesome I'm totally not biased, honest! and she's yet to make her appearance in the anime thus far. You're pretty spot-on that there isn't much plot development though, but it's an amusing read. Nisekoi is quite regularly referred to as 'blush porn'.

If you have poo poo taste like myself and enjoy harems with all the comedy, misunderstandings™ and fan shipping that it brings then you'll likely enjoy the manga. Shaft have done a surprisingly good job of it so far, particularly the bus scene in the most recent episode the engrish for 'curb' was that good.

I don't really care for the story much, but Shaft and Shinbo make every episode a pretty entertaining watch.

Things will continue to happen, and there is plot development, but not necessarily leading to resolution.

This is where I am with this, too. There is no endgame for this, it can't possibly have a resolution, let alone a satisfying and conclusive one. We've been here before a million times and a million times more it shall be. It's visually fun, and sometimes a bit funny. Good enough fluff to carry me to the spring season.

I don't know why this works. The premise isn't original in the slightest, and the author throws so many SHOCKING twists at us that the whole plot has sort of devolved into a convoluted blob of cliches and manga genes.

Also I feel like a trashy 14 year old girl when I read it. But I can't stop reading it because it works

I considered making a thread for Nisekoi, but never did because while I like it. I think there's absolutely nothing to it. It's dumb, kinda funny and really only doesn't manage to be like the majority of these rom-com's (read: poo poo) because of Shaft + Shinbo.

When I saw that there was going to be a hotsprings episode, I called out EXACTLY what was going to happen.

I feel like the fact that Nisekoi is introducing legions of Shounen Jump readers to Shaft is most interesting thing about it.

I'm surprised that Hayate has gone on as long as it has, given that it's had more filler arcs than Beach (at least Hata can draw backgrounds). Nisekoi has not a lot of plot but there's been some heavily hinted development in the past couple of months regarding Marika including some new deathflags, as if she hasn't had enough already. There appears to be a big secret she's hiding, so it's possible she knows who has the real key to Raku's pendant

The only nice thing I can say is that at least Shaft and Shinbo will make Nisekoi a beautiful looking boring mess that goes nowhere.

Seriously though I'm convinced Nisekoi was written as a Springtime for Hitler scam to get back at WSJ for axing Double Arts.

They're minor and red herrings, but the flags are there nonetheless. Her assistant (Honda) is always harping on about how she'll be in serious poo poo if she were to push herself too hard, and she's been a lot more energetic in recent chapters. Especially with the amusement park date where Mikage was subtly asking Honda about Marika's health issues. Face it, it's not normal to have someone watching over you all the time because of medical reasons

Here's to hoping that next episode will be her time to shine

Her poor health comes up quite a lot. I honestly wouldn't put it past the author to slap her with a terminal or debilitating secret illness for the sake of drama. It's horribly cliche, but that just makes it more likely considering the oversaturation of cliches in every goddamn character.

Or maybe I'm an rear end who reads into minor details too much.

I'm finding Hayate more enjoyable now that Ayumu and Hina are getting more presence, but it'd be nice for the the idiot trio to make some more appearances. Nisekoi has it's moments too, but they're mostly Marika's comic relief chapters*
The faces are great, hence the 'blush porn' tag that it occasionally gets.

Hayate's loving comiket namek arc was seriously drawn out as hell. That's pretty much my complaint with the series. Nisekoi is less funny but I still chuckle at the silly antics and the faces. And Marika chapter is the best chapter every time

The first two seasons of the Hayate anime were legitimately hilarious, but the comic hasn't actually been funny for a long time.

Nisekoi is at its best in Tsugumi or Ruri chapters, but overall I find it a lot funnier than the Hayate manga.

At least the arc ended well. Eventually. That was some herculean stalling, though. I still like Hayate a lot but ever since the first serious arc it's been half funny/half serious and I get that doesn't work for everyone. I still dig it so whatever.

Nisekoi I dunno. I kept with it for about six episodes. I can handle zero plot movement and Shaft is still the Shaftiest but the characters weren't doing it for me.

Has nobody else noticed how much this show is similar to earlier Rumiko Takahashi stuff (especially Ranma) to an absolutely ridiculous degree?

It's like watching Takahashi without a completely over the top scifi/fantasy gimmick. It hasn't got a gimmick at all. I refuse to accept the love locket thing as a gimmick, because of how bland it is.

I came here via marathoning every Shaft show that was halfway decent given how they are the only modern anime studio I seem to like. Hello. I'm quite confused by this one.

To be fair, Rumiko Takahashi created a lot of the staples of romcom manga in the first place, especially harem manga, so it's not too surprising to discover that there's always elements that imitate her in a lot of series. As everyone's noted, Nisekoi's striking point is it basically hits every genre cliche with barely any fanservice. The locket storyline is nothing original either, since Love Hina worked with a similar premise, and every character basically hits some standard archetype. The only thing that surprises me is that the two main heroines have each received enough focus now that I'm unsure which one would be picked even though my initial guess would have been Kirisaki obviously, though it probably doesn't matter in the end anyways.

Well, to be fair, with Love Hina you could(sort-of) see an endgame coming. Also, while Urashima basically starts off a spineless pussy that tries to get over his lack of pretty much any likable traits, Ichijou does seem to have some backbone; he's just kind of wishy-washy abou--

Okay, they're basically the same story. The only reason I think Love Hina is slightly better is due to a combination of nostalgia (I was in High School / my first year of College when I read through the American translation of the manga) and also because the bass player of my band bought the English-translated volumes (along with old-school novels) for me as an encouragement of sorts to stay in the straight and narrow. I miss that dude a ton.

Going back to Nisekoi, I think it's a mostly inoffensive manga/anime and the only thing that seems the least bit gutsy is that Shueisha decided to go with Shaft as animation studio. I'm only in episode 2, but the fanservice seems to remain at a minimum. Hopefully it'll stay that way.

Love Hina is better because it copies Maisson Ikkoku, while Nisekoi only copies To-Love-Ru which copies Urusei Yatsura. The former builds towards its ending with character growth and plot development, while the latter just meanders about usually maintaining the status quo till an ending happens. I like the former more just because there is a sense of time and progression, while with the latter, the only change that's likely to have happened is the number of characters. Course, there's nothing wrong with comedic slice of life with romance elements, as long as you know that it'll probably run for a long time till either the author gets tired of it or it gets canceled.

Three including bodyguard girl. We also have M girl showing up, and the anime us adding a new girl a librarian girl I believe.

Speaking of "main character," I'm the Japanese character polls Ondera is first, M is second, and Chitoge is third. Bodyguard is fourth I think.

Spot on, except Tsugumi was fifth. Ruri stole 4th place ahead of her.

It looks like Marika will appear at long last in episode 12 or 13 depending on whether they rush or draw out the chapters where they go through the field trip photos and Chitoke greaking he lock on Raku's pendant
