What options do I have in California trying to get rid of a 2003 Ford Focus with ~100k miles on it. It needs new tires, brakes, the check engine light is on, and it recently died on me while driving on the freeway (battery light issue). The thing is only worth about ~$2,000-$3,000 in working condition and we don't need two cars so I'd rather just get rid of it, but not sure what my options are with the check engine light on.

Anyone know if it can be sold as a PNO to a scrap yard or something? Can I donate it with the check engine light on and just write it off? Any suggestions? Tried Googling it and the answers were mixed and matched so figured if anyone had gone through this before maybe they could shed some light.

You can definitely sell it to a junkyard/pick n pull or actual scrap yard. They won't pay much, but if you can drive it there you'll get something, maybe a couple hundred bucks. You could also donate it like spwrozek said.

I've never understood the appeal of giving the government an interest-free loan of your money, but I have a friend who hides ten-dollar bills in the pockets of rarely-worn jackets to give herself the treat of finding an unexpected small windfall and I guess it's the same basic idea.

Personally, I just don't like the idea of "having" to come up with the money. I'd be easily able to carry it out of savings (whether e fund or discretionary savings) but it's nice to know I won't have to cover the shortfall, even if I lose a couple bips or even full points on that money. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ My income has varied enough in the last few years that it isn't super easy for me to estimate accurately what exactly I will owe for the full year ahead of time though.

Honest mistake? Scam? Who knows! Good reminder of the importance of recordkeeping, in any event.

I had a landlord that tried to pull this with the utility bills every once in awhile. Boy was it great sending them the copy of the cashed checks that US Bank kept on file. They all had nice big endorsement stamps on the back. Dude was a loving scumbag.

Is there anything special I need to do to form an LLC and give it some money to start with?

I just want to spend $500 to start an LLC and throw $500 into it to start a business. Seems like such a simple thing that hiring a tax lawyer to tell me how to deposit money would be an unnecessary pain in the butt but the google searching I do just tells me to do that so wtf? What makes it so complicated?

Iwould think that I could just set up a business bank account and then transfer some money into it, keeping rexord of the fact that I did so, and then only ever use business money to pay for business expenses and at the end of the year take my records to an accountant to tell me what to do for taxes.

IANAL, but you can find draft LLC docs on the internet (you'll probably get what you pay for to a certain extent). You will likely need an EIN to open a bank account, but the good news is you can do it online via the IRS for free and it's relatively easy.

Keep good records of cash in and out, I liked GoDaddy bookkeeping when I was doing sole prop stuff, but there are a ton of options out there for tracking receipts and expenses.

This is in their fine print:

I'm trying to decide whether or not I think there's any risk here.

It's just a cash sweep account, the Bank I work for offers one. The transit time may offer a little tiny bit of risk, but they should be sweeping everyday.
I wouldn't be worried about it since they're sweeping to FDIC insured FIs.

I'm effected by the Equifax breach, and I'm trying to figure out whether to go for the much less than $125 check or the credit monitoring. Most people seem to advise the credit monitoring is a better deal, but is it? I sort of feel like between credit monitoring I get for free from some of my credit cards plus websites like Credit Karma and Credit Sesame I'm not sure what value another credit monitoring service would have for me that is more than a check for $0.01.

Do we actually know which product you get if you take the credit monitoring? It sounds like Equifax Complete Premier to me, as one court document says the estimated retail value is $1920, which is $16 a month. If it was Equifax Complete Premier maybe I would take it just for the FICO score. Maybe the million dollar insurance that comes with the monitoring makes it worth it?

Just freeze all three credit bureaus, credit monitoring is a dumb service when you can entirely lock down your credit report.

An update along with a question. My last day was on Friday, and I went out for drinks with some regional managers along with a couple other location managers. I told them I wasn't having the best of luck finding anything in our industry except for an entry level gig at one of our competitors, and one of the regional managers said, "I don't know why I didn't think about this earlier, but are you willing to travel? Or work in IT?" I said I was, and he got up and made some calls. He didn't get a hold of anyone, but he must have talked to someone over the weekend. This morning I was cc'd on this email to the director of IT.

My question is if I should send any kind of follow up email to the guy? If so, what should I say? I have zero background in IT but I know the program we use at work probably better than most managers. And most of the people in the IT department don't have IT backgrounds but were trained on the job. Or is this maybe a good question for the negotiation thread? Or the resume thread?

Definitely follow up, congrats on doing a networking!

Yea I have to mail them poo poo I guess, probably because I was an authorized user on an account of my Dad's and he died last year so I'm sure its causing them to lose their poo poo.

Its been a hot minute since I've really needed to be aware of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) but they shouldn't be hitting you up that frequently. Take a look at this and google around for a little more info, https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/debt-collection-faqs
Ask them to stop calling if you haven't already, and then send them a letter requesting the same thing via certified mail with proof of delivery.
Or you could just block their phone number I guess.

They shouldn't. Any credit history based verification systems may be messed up, but you shouldn't need to jump through those hoops to do that.
