A kindle paper-white/no ads: It was on sale, we're moving to a smaller place and I really have too many books. I also promised my wife that I won't buy books for at least a year so I can use whatever amazon gives away for free, public domain and my local (couple miles down the road) library. There's also a ton of free public domain audio books I really should listen to. I'm pretty sure when I sell the books I have I'll cover the cost of the kindle anyway.

Yeah, I'm not sure from the phrasing you are using here if this is what you mean or you mean getting physical books from the library, but most libraries these days also have systems to check out e-books from their website. Or university libraries as well. If you're taking classes at your local CC, you can access it. Or like the city of Berkeley library (huuuuuuuge) you only have to be a California resident to get a membership. Pretty dang cool. Also audiobooks, which I like to listen to on long drives.

Didn't read for a few days, missed smart phone chat.

As someone who "travels" for a living sometimes (tour managing bands and festivals) I can't imagine doing it without my phone. Camera, map, Internet, calls, notes to self, etc. indispensable.

There are multiple apps to divide your contacts into groups, set all personal people in one group and set the work group to go to voicemail automatically. DONE AND DONE, vacation!!

The major issue is with keeping them functioning... Having managed many bars with pinball or old arcade games, even the giant company we rented them from couldn't keep them functioning most of the time.

Also, for loving Christ's sake don't get into the bar business without experience in it.

Don't forget that it will probably be three months before you get your first unemployment payment, even if you apply the hour after being laid off!

In CA they now come on a BoA debit card where you can't deduct more than $1000 a day (because you have to use the ATM!) and because it's just a prepaid card and not an account, they can't assist you inside the bank, so gently caress you if your rent is more than $1000!

My contract with Verizon is ending and I am not interested in renewing it. I have a Verizon iPhone 5S (so CDMA) and wanted to switch to a prepaid or month to month service. I am confused as to whether my phone will work on other networks? Googling around, some sites say iPhones 5 and above are transportable, other sites seem to indicate they wont. Anyone have any experience with this? Can anyone recommend a good prepaid or month to month service they have used? If I can get this to work it will cut my bill by 50-65%, based on the advertised prices... I asked Verizon about their prepaid service but the rep said I'd have to change my number switching from a contract.

I went from contract to prepaid with Verizon and the sales girl in store said I could keep my current number if I wanted.

Hmmmm. Thanks for responding. Perhaps I just need to go in and make more of a fuss, I asked the salesperson in passing when I went in to buy a new charger last month. Perhaps I need to have them pull up my acct and talk specifics. I've been with them for a very, very long time so maybe that will hold some weight.

Does anyone know where a good place is to sell or consign lightly used designer clothes or accessories? I'm going through my stuff and trying to minimize clutter and sell things to pay off debts. I have an inherited pair of $430 designer sunglasses I'd like to unload.

Yeah, actually I don't know why I didn't think of Buffalo Exchange for the glasses. I'm in SF, they tend to offer really low on clothes but the glasses are pretty "hip" so it might be worth it. Thanks!

I'm doing a lot on CL, especially the more cluttery things like books or furniture but vintage and designer clothes is kinda different. I hate ebay but have considered etsy. The place recommended to me for vintage was Ruby Lane but is 54 dollars a month to maintain a store plus listing fees... gently caress that.

Thanks folks.

Does anyone know approximately when YNAB is likely to be on sale on Steam again? Or are those sales completely random?

I feel super dumb saying this and I almost posted in the "bad with money" thread instead, but here goes...

So, I started a job at a new restaurant about four months ago. I make pretty good money for the service industry, because I have a lot of experience and I live in the Bay Area. Without disclosing too much, I am an unmarried woman with no dependents. I happened to take a closer look at my paystub and I'm paying ~37% of my net income in taxes at the moment. I don't object to paying taxes. I love libraries, roads, schools, etc. but I feel like that at that percentage of my income, I ought to be living in some fantastic socialist utopia rather than just existing in SF. Without any special payouts or circumstances and making what I do, that seems like an absurdly high proportion of my income to be paying? Am I incorrect? Or just out of touch?

E: I suppose a ballpark income is necessary... I make ~48k at my primary job on average (guaranteed 2 days a week, usually work 3 or 4) plus extra side jobs, (i'm also in school for 14 units) but I'm just going off this one paycheck for my main job. Not trying to hide income or do anything sketchy but nearly 40% seems really high.

Make sure your withholdings are correct, I guess? That sounds high to me and I am also from CA.

I just filled out the standard form (W4?) for a single woman with no dependents, I can ask at work to adjust but I'm not really sure what grounds I'd have to do so... Genuinely, my employer is fantastic and I don't think they're doing anything weird with my hours or pay. I just happened to spend some time looking at the deductions and it seemed really, really high.

non-poop chat.

I switched my Verizon 5s iphone to Page Plus and it was alright for a few months, but they keep loving me on the data part of my plan... Never seems to reset so the speed is always choked to the point of being non-functional (yes, I am on wifi wherever possible.) I emailed them about it so I'm hoping to get a small refund or credit back, but I'd like to switch to Credo. My screen has been broken three times since the switch and I'm tired of having to replace it. My roommate has it, works great for her and she commutes to a similar area as I do. I was going to buy my new phone outright from them and use their service, but the insurance seemed steep and Im not sure they insure phones you arent leasing from them.

Whats a good way to insure an iphone against damage/theft that isn't through your carrier?

BFC Note: yes, yes, iPhone is bad with money, blah blah blah. Honestly, it's indispensable to me for work, I must have smart phone capabilities, use certain apps, etc. A few years ago I had various droid phones and it was a pain. I can't switch to metro PCS or a dumb phone.

Does anyone have any resources for learning more about Salesforce? I've spent the last fourteen years in the service industry and am looking to move/advance my career beyond slinging drinks every night... I'm in SF so Salesforce is huge, but I've also been studying Project Management. I don't really have the personality/interest in coding, but I am good at leading people (lots of management experience, service leader in some really prestigious restaurants, awards won, certifications, etc.) logisitics and event planning... and goddamn it, want some of that sweet dirty tech money and to not be on my feet 15+ hours a day!

I did a cursory search here on the forums, but only found references to it, not like, a thread about it. What can I teach myself about it? Is my only option really their $5000 course?

Help me BFC!

My mom's unemployment money finally started coming. She applied back in April... loving assholes. But there's another hurdle in that she's forced to open a Bank of America account to receive this money, plus she's only allowed to transfer $5,000 a week to her credit union while the rest has to sit at Bank of America. Why is Bank of America involved in this at all and why can't california just deposit the money directly. Assholes.

She does not need to open an account, EDD payments are separate. You can just login here https://prepaid.bankofamerica.com/EddCard

Is there a retail banking thread? I've been with Simple for years, but they just announced today that BBVA's shutting them down, so I'm gonna need to find a replacement.

Problem is, I don't really care about most of the stuff that review sites talk about (extra cash is invested, and not stuck in an account making next to nothing, I don't use ATMs that often so refunded ATM fees aren't super important, etc.), and what I do care about (a clean, modern experience on their web site, a clean, native mobile app, good support when I need to contact somebody, etc.) doesn't really tend to get mentioned. It's often hard to even find screenshots of what UIs look like, let alone what the user experience actually is.

I have heard good things about Ally as other posters mentioned but I decided to go with Chime as they are headquartered in my city. I really like the app, it’s great and the few times I’ve had issues (my address is weird and I was missing a card that had been mailed) they are SO responsive. Within the app, you can talk to a robot that directs you to the correct customer service aspect and then a human gets back to you quickly (longest I ever had to wait was maybe 35 minutes?) The only issue I’ve ever had was when a friend bought something off me and gave me cash (enough that I wanted to put it in my acct rather than my little petty cash stash at home) and they don’t have ATMs. I think you can pay a small fee at like CVS/Walgreens and they can deposit for you, but I just ended up giving the cash to my fiancé (who’s with Chase and has ATM deposit access) and had him venmo me. That was also a year or so ago so the situation may have changed - Chime is a newer bank so they have new developments and features rolling out all the time.

Additionally, if you’re trying to build credit, they offer a “credit builder” card where you deposit X amount into a sub account, that card functions in the world like a debit card but they report it each month as credit.

I’ve also never had an issue integrating Chime into other accts like venmo, my Discover card, mint, etc.
