Is there an (easy, not much of a modder) way to ensure you don't get completely broken megabeasts in a short amount of time, or ever?

I'm doing extremely well in masterwork, but often, at some point a building-destroying, fire-breathing Red Dragon/Titanium Colossus, whatever show up and kill everybody. Setting number of beasts and natural world savagery to low doesn't seem to prevent the chance of it happening.

So I was watching Vikings and suddenly thought "man, if I still played DF I would hella make a concept fortress in a frigid swamp, with creepy totems and traps everywhere and human sacrifice and magic mushrooms and.. and.. then it dawned on me: Why wasn't I playing DF anymore?

So back I am. Leathercauldron beckons!

I haven't played for at least a year. Suddenly, you find dwarves with 'z', and trees are suddenly big and have roots and poo poo <3 Anything else I should be aware of?

I just had an idea for an RPG session while playing Kobold camp: Players play the part of kobolds defending a warren from heroes, using only bone shards, kobold ingenuity, leather, their own poo poo, and a psychoactive toad to defend their homes with!

I can't really make out of it's an excellent or horrible idea..

I think my copy of DF is cursed by gypsies. Sometimes it will just freeze my entire OS, and now, upon world generation, it just rejects every single region it makes, even though I'm using single worldgen - I stopped counting at 100 rejected regions, and it's never done anything like that before

Got back into this( God help me!), and just downloaded the latest LNP as I used to, but now Dwarf Therapist seems to be broken? Do up/down staircases no longer let liquid pass through? I just made a reservoir in which the water falls through U/D staircases, something I've done many times before, but the water doesn't pass through no matter how long I wait (and I've done this a lot of times before, admittedly in earlier editions of the game)

One thing I've always wondered about, is there a reason some leathers cost more than others from start? If I pay 15p blind cave bear leather instead of the (presumably shittier) 5p dingo leather, will I get something that is somehow stronger, or yields better protection from blows? Anyone know the mechanics or just reason behind the cost differential?
