I got the impression that the boy 'left' despite Ginko's treatment plan, not because of it, and that in the end it turned out to be inevitable. That made the episode more bittersweet than anything, since because of the mushi the boy and his mother could at least spend several years together. Certainly preferable to being infected with Watahiko... holy poo poo, that episode (S1E21)
