True I just didn't know if one distro outshines the rest.

Also osx is Meh. I loves me a Unix but I could get more machine for my dollar with windows and cygwin if I wanted to pay for an os

Cygwin sucks it's performance sucks, you can't rely on the scheduler, there is even more newline character bullshit then normal and it has small package library

I wrote bash script on Cygwin and then I had to port it to linux because sort didn't work the same way, and how case sensitivity works is retarded, once it was ported it was about 100x faster then Cygwin

this seem like the most appropriate thread

rsync on cygwin no longer sucks! I updated a server I setup in December and rsync went from <7MB/s to 105MB/s

uhh never mind it's only fast when you initiate rsync on windows, pushing from linux to windows goes at ~33MB/s

Oracle Linux 6.7 you can get by with 3.3:

code:
$ sudo wget -O /etc/yum.repos.d/public-yum-ol6.repo [url]http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-ol6.repo[/url]
$ sudo yum install scl-utils
$ sudo yum install python33
$ scl enable python33 -- bash
$ python --version
Python 3.3.2
Without changing to Oracle RPMs one could try the RHEL/CentOS instructions for SCL

there is also iuscommunity thats maintained by rackspace, they actually have 3.5

i am doing this on gigabit ethernet with best possible gbe latency (a single switch between local and remote). i know vnc was designed ages ago and it's poo poo but it's poo poo that actually works pretty well for my use case, when it works

with gbe bandwidth and modern compression techniques vnc can feel nearly as good as local graphics even at high resolutions, but it's fragile. easily disrupted by a bad vnc client/server combo. honestly most of the problem with vnc is the same as all other open sores: fragmented to death by multiple groups of cadt methodology devotees

i may just say gently caress it and give up on centos 7 for now, as 6 has been quite needs suiting in the past and i don't wanna spend more days fighting 7 (this was not my only issue, not by a long shot, and i suspect i'm not done either)

what about https://www.nomachine.com its still bad but better than vnc

oh and guacamole is also better than vnc even though it uses vnc

actually I just use unzip or tar xf as appropriate, because I’m not terrified of computers, but nice try

the correct behaviour for an intuitive gui is what windows does for zip files, though: treat archives as folders you can just browse into and copy stuff out of if you want. simple, transparent, never accidentally leaves a million unwanted files scattered across your home directory

the even more correct behaviour is to not use archives but to use mountable disk images with compression, a zip file is basically a dmg that can't be mounted natively* (what windows does is a hack)
