Alright I actually made music with my synth pile for once:

https://soundcloud.com/snowcloud/electrojoe

Bass and lead is Shruthi, strings is Yamaha An1x, drums are Drumatic. Strings and lead were recorded live.

Yeah, I realized that I went from sperging for thirty hours on the perfect kick to making this in an afternoon (which I'm still working on and need to make less remix-y) and some of it was sampling out elements of percussion from older vinyl and mixing it with premade as poo poo claps/kicks. I EQed things enough that they're probably not recognizable on their own and I'm actually happy with where it's going, which is totally new for me.

Plugging the Yamaha An1x again. Nice pad timbre range from buttery to sparkly, excellent reverb and delay, 300-400 bucks used.

Whatup fellow S2000 dude, what do you use yours for? I use mine mostly just for gritting stuff up due to lack of a proper SCSI cable.

Got a used emagic MIDI box; there are no drivers for my OS, but it works nicely in standalone mode as a MIDI patcher. Here are three synths being driven by it simultaneously, showcasing the kick-rear end brass tones of the AN1x in particular (caution, loud-ish):

I'm still hugely impressed that Waldorf had the balls to put something as niche as the Streichfett to market, and for what it is, it sounds great. Given the philosophical constraints of what constitutes a string machine, they could hardly do any better.

So hey. Shruthi users in here, have you guys had much success with making leads? I've had mine for a while now, and I've really only been successful making bass tones with it. I LOVE what it does in the low register (I use it for maximum cheese fm slap bass mostly) but I'd like to get a little more out of it.

Really depends what sort of lead you're after. Most of the oscillators exhibit some aliasing artifacts in the higher registers despite some of those being band-limited. Usually I can get some good lead sounds by running the output through some slight overdrive, otherwise the sound is a bit weak, at least with the standard filter card. The SDE mods can help you get some extra bite directly off the synth.

Try experimenting with the different waveforms; the FM one in particular sounds nice with its parameter set to max. Blade Runner type leads with two slightly detuned saw waves and some attack on VCA and filter sound nice as well.

snorch
Jul 27, 2009
The oscillators are free-running, so there will be a click sometimes no matter what when the attack is zero. Portamento/legato are set on the tuning settings page. There's also a firmware mod to make the synth store prt/leg with the patch instead of system-wide:
http://mutable-instruments.net/wiki/Shruthi-1_firmware_hacks

Super-smooth is probably not the Shruthi's strong suit, again limited by the low sample rate and nonexistent antialiasing. You'll probably be best off with triangle, FM, or phase distortion (z- prefix) waveforms. You'll probably still have to spruce it up with some reverb and maybe chorusing.

I'm going to try to program Phase Distortion synthesis in Python. Sine waves and sample rate fuckery can't be that hard, can it?

Actually tempted to do this on an FPGA instead. It seems REALLY simple in that domain.

Shruthi oscillator code has some CZ style stuff in it:

https://github.com/pichenettes/shruthi-1/blob/master/shruthi/oscillator.cc

Phase distortion code starts at line 222. It doesn't make much sense without surrounding context of the code architecture, but if you're smart and take your time, you can probably figure it out.

Yeah, two saws, osc2 synced to osc1, with osc2 pitch tied to an envelope to make it decay in pitch I think.

I've been using Reaper for about five years now and am very happy with it. There are some quirks and Flipperwaldt is right about the UI clutter, but once I got used to the keyboard shortcuts and general workflow of it, I have found it to be a very fluid experience. JS effects are neat if you need to do some quick custom utility shizzle (subtract channel 1 from 3 and 2 from 4, put the result to channels 1 and 2 and things like that). The routing matrix is really neat for grouping stuff together, building buses, handling MIDI and more. The whole thing is highly customizable and scriptable. In all, it's a full-featured DAW with an occasionally steep learning curve, but once you get things figured out you'll be hard-pressed to outgrow it.

My friend was over at mine and after playing around with my shruthi xt he decided he wants a mono synth with as many controls accessible on the front panel/needing as little menu digging as possible. I didnt really have anything good to recommend him though, any ideas? his budget would be ideally 500, maybe max 1k but he did wince a little when I asked if he'd go that high.

shruthi xt's aren't on sale anymore, otherwise i'd have built him one.

e: I forgot about the ms-20mini. ha. is there a better option?

If any of you are the DIY type, the Eagle files are still available on the Mutable Instruments GitHub, and the BOM including Digikey and Mouser part numbers can be found here. With a bit of legwork, elbow grease and about $350 you can have your own from-scratch Shruthi XT. The most expensive part would probably be the PCB (there are plenty of single-board batching services out there) and laser cutting for the case (Ponoko looks decent). Perhaps ask Olivier if he's still got some filter kits kicking around, If so you'd only have to worry about the control board. Or you could try ebay.

It's a drat shame they stopped making the XT kits. As far as I can tell there's not much else out there in that price range that's as knobby and can provide so much tonal variety and cool features in a single box.
