This is the setup I was using before getting fully settled into my new place, but all the pieces are there. Also, I don't know if anybody here has seen this yet, but some people are working on a hardware tracker-based groovebox. I'm more excited than could be considered reasonable. http://nerdsynth.com/

The add I got before the video started off with a crying baby, and I was gonna post about how funny to me that was, but then after hearing the "product" I know the crying would be more musically useful. Anyway, Korg M01D is kind of interesting, but the sequencer is balls and the tones are really bad. Maybe it's not interesting at all.

A MIRACLE posted:Are you playing it with an external keyboard? My roommate also got a volca keys, and I can honestly say that for regular playing around the house, the ribbon controller is actually really satisfying to use. That being said, If I ever record it or gig with it, I'll most likely use an external keyboard.

On the topic of hardware integration, I don't wanna be that guy, but a wonderful way to integrate hardware synths into your setup is with your hands actually touching physical keys But anyway, look how good the Bass Station 2 sounds through a fender twin reverb! https://soundcloud.com/mrwimmer/teaser-for-an-interesting-life

So, once again I poke my head in to remind people that Chipmusic is a thing that exists. I got an arduinoboy, which lets me get 5-pin midi out from LSDj. I'm using it to drive a Volca keys and a Shruthi. It sounds something like this. https://soundcloud.com/mrwimmer/i-can-wip I am having entirely too much fun with this. It's really nice to be able to drive hardware I like with software I like more

Firaga posted:So my friend owns a Microbrute and I have a TR-8, we are starting to make some pretty cool beeps and boops but we want to build toward a setup we can use without a computer. So I assume that next we need some sort of sampler/loop device, and an outboard mixer? I don't see why you NEED a sampler. If you want sync between the sequencers, you should just be able to go midi out of one box to the midi in of the other. An outboard mixer would be helpful, yes.

Swagger Dagger posted:I know you didn't post this asking for feedback but it would be a billion times better if you didn't have the synth in the intro playing so goddamn many notes. I get what you're saying, but we're gonna have to disagree on this one. Having only 4 channels makes it so you have to find creative ways to spell out the big jazz chords I want. So slow arps with lots of delay is the most fun I've had with it so far. I will probably end up doing some filter sweeps on the keys in that part though. It is a wee bit static, tonally speaking.

net work error posted:I'd be interested in your thoughts on this new chiptune synth that came out recently which is Arduino based as well: If you had asked me last march, I would have said it was an incredibly overpriced and kind of underwhelming arduino synth. But nowadays, with basically just an FTDI cable, it's an underwhelming subtractive synth, a pretty cool wavetable synth, and a shiny new lofi drum machine! https://soundcloud.com/soulsby-synthesizers/the-atmegadrum I like lo-fi drums a little too much though. Personally, I think that "chippy" sounds really shine when they're edited with the greatest of granularity, so I don't know if a traditional hardware synth is really well suited for getting the most out of it. Also it's still a little pricey. Wait for there to be some sort of diy version available again?

Unless posted:Fun mini-documentary made about friends' circuit-bending and synth building in Chicago: I ended up enjoying this quite a bit. I really wish they had played more of the piano plus cigar box section and less of the industrial-y stuff, though. I've heard plenty of the latter, and not nearly enough of the former.

So hey. Shruthi users in here, have you guys had much success with making leads? I've had mine for a while now, and I've really only been successful making bass tones with it. I LOVE what it does in the low register (I use it for maximum cheese fm slap bass mostly) but I'd like to get a little more out of it.

snorch posted:Really depends what sort of lead you're after. Most of the oscillators exhibit some aliasing artifacts in the higher registers despite some of those being band-limited. Usually I can get some good lead sounds by running the output through some slight overdrive, otherwise the sound is a bit weak, at least with the standard filter card. The SDE mods can help you get some extra bite directly off the synth. Well, the FM osc mode isn't a wavetable, it's actual FM. The parameter is the mix, and the range affects the relative tuning of the modulator wave. I guess I should have been more specific about what kind of lead I'm shooting for. I like super smooth, wind-esque leads. Actually, it would be perfect if anyone could tell me how to get rid of the clicky note on artifact other than increasing the attack a little, or how to add portamento in the synth interface.

Or get a 2ds in preperation for the DSN-12 and the MO1D in the meantime. http://www.korg.com/us/products/synthesizers/korg_dsn12/ And sweet! I'll get workin. It'll be fun only having one channel capable of volume control

Well hey, gearlust is rough, but here's something you can all mess around with free of charge! Some dude made a new instrument for gameboy, called chord, and I've been having quite a good time with it. It's basically an arpeggiator or a 3 voice polyphonic synth thing? you use the buttons to play it, and you can what note each button plays, the duty of the square wave, rate of arpeggiaton, etc. It's just cool, grab an emulator and have some fun =D http://www.humbletune.com/chord/
