Struggling to get my head around how to effectively use a 24 port patch bay to connect some synths/drum machines to an multi-port audio interface, a mixer, some effect boxes and if possible a basic recorder. Want to make the jump from noodling around with a single device to having something with some structure and start using a DAW, any recommendations/pointers would be great.

Watched a lot of youtube videos but find they either focus on normalised/half normalised/not normalised, connecting an instrument to a single device then skip over everything else or jump straight into a large studio setup with multiple patch bays. Lots of talk about planning stuff out but not finding much showing that planning.

I've filled a 10u rack with some cheap gear I've picked up over the years and have a guitar plus some cheap synths/drum machines I'd like to connect together as flexibly as possible. I also have a Yamaha MG10XU, a set of powered monitors and a Zoom R8.

* 1U VU meter
* Behringer UMC1820 Interface
* 24 port Patch bay
* 1U 2 channel compressor
* 1U Reverb
* 2U EQ
* 3U Oscilloscope (unneccesary)

My first thought was to go something like instruments -> interface inputs -> interface outputs -> mixer with remaining ports for everything else something like.

First set of 8 patch bays - Instrument inputs to audio interface inputs.
Second set of 8 patch bays - audio interface outputs to mixer inputs.
Third set of 8 patch bays - compressor/reverb/eq/vu meter.

This seems like it might work but doesn't leave much room for expansion and leaves out the main outs and some others things. Dropping to 6/6/6/6 sounds like an improvement but can't help think I'm missing a better approach.

i just have a single 48 patch bay most channels half normalled. snake out to mixer, inserts out in a thru configuration, stuff like that

Thanks, that makes some sense.

Just figured out that the line outs on the UMC1820 don't work the way I thought, in that they don't mirror the inputs unless routing within the DAW is configured that way.

I need to have a think on what I'm trying to achieve, most of the fun so far has been doing something without a computer but seems my plans to setup something that works standalone or integrates with a DAW is more complex than I expected.

Yeah, I really love these, everybody should have one. Or more.

I bought one earlier this year, might be the best thing I've bought all year. Picked up a 2nd a few weeks back as an xmas gift for a work colleague at £90, saw Amazon UK dropped the price to £70 so had to buy a third (second for myself).

I'm a gigantic idiot and thought the Volcas could be powered over USB for some reason. Drum arrived today and the DC 9V center-positive supply I need happens to be the one type I don't have. I have no car, and I can't think of the last time I bought AA batteries. The icing on the cake was that it snowed all day, otherwise I might've biked to the store.

I haven't used these with a Volca but I do use them with other synths, work well with a USB power adaptor and means I don't need to use the Euro adapters a lot of online place send with UK purchases. Ripcords convert from USB to a range of voltages, polarities and tip size. They offer a range of adapters and cables that allow you to use two ripcords to increase total current or one ripcord to power multiple Volcas. Expensive but handy.

Some things to consider, pictures don't show it clearly but the USB plug is thicker than it looks so can block adjacent sockets if used with a compact power supply with horizontally stacked sockets. The power supply database is comprehensive but I've found has the wrong polarity for some devices.

Picked up a cheap(ish) Akai Tom Cat from reverb, mostly as these came out around the time I first got into drum machines/synths and I regret not buying on when they dropped in price. Reverb seller had it listed as very good/recently serviced but dispatched it in a brown envelope and when it arrived was missing several screws from the face plate and the rubber feet from the bottom.

I assume this is not normal behaviour but has anyone ever encountered this? When it's powered up the step lights will light from 1-16 then back from 16-1. Pads are lit but LCD display is not. Pressing play will show a cryptic 107 on the LCD. When the step lights return to 1 an audible click can be heard from both outputs which is unaffected by any of the volume knobs. This process repeats, sometimes stopping after 6-30 occurrences, sometimes never. I appreciate that these need to warm up before sounding their best but no starting seems something totally different.

Probably going to return it but would consider keeping it if potentially fixable. Can solder and perform basic electronic troubleshooting but other than some modding pages, can't find much info on repairing broken tom cats.

Sq64 was a really good impulse buy for my set up. I'm not very good at inputting polyphonic note sequences yet but just as a fuckload of gates that can be muted, ratched, made random, etc, it is very handy to have. I haven't updated the firmware at all and there have been no bugs.

I picked an SQ-64 up a few weeks back, haven't had a chance to use it in depth but found some of the design decisions strange. No realtime recording of drums, complicated pattern change mode and strange arp being the ones that stood out. The latest firmware is needed to use the editor and custom scales. The editor doesn't offer any way to enter/edit sequences, mostly midi mapping functionality.

Recently picked up a SQ-1 and noticed the gate voltage is around 13.3V which surprised me as I was expecting it to be 10V or 12V maximum. Is this something to be concerned about? I've been unable to find much info about this, except strangely finding people complaining about the SQ-1 not being able to trigger devices expecting 10V. Measuring using a cheap oscilloscope with a 50ohm BNC to 3.5mm cable, so could be user error/not taking load into account but other measurements with the same setup seem fine.

Yeah, I picked up a couple of FNIRSI-138 PRO's recently for £20 (under $25) and a ZEEWEII DSO1511G which was about twice the price but is nicely built, has a basic square wave generator and basic FFT.

Saw some US people on reddit talk about receiving their NTS-2 around a month or so ago. Juno in the UK has had stock since around the 7th. I am tempted but not so much if need to pay twice the price of an NTS-1.

Yep, I admit I have a mordax data but still like the idea of something a bit more portable. Also I highly praise the NTS-1, as it's something cheap I've been able to gift to people getting into creating their own music.

For anyone looking at cheap BNC based scopes https://www.threetom.com/product/wiretap-v002-eurorack-to-test-equipment-adapter/ is great but expensive and can be hard to get.

Chased it up and they destroyed it a few days later. eBay seller never responded but got the money back when eBay stepped in.
