I wish I could smoek a weed and do the synths, but I work on computers and printers up in the tar sands, and they occasionally require drug tests to access the sites, so I can't. :(

I just pre-ordered an IK Multimedia Uno synth. I think it looks pretty cool - sort of like a Volca keys, but with some neat extra features. Hopefully, I'll actually make some music with it!!

Has anyone had a chance to play with IK Multimedia's Uno synth? I impulse-pre-ordered one back in May, and I got it yesterday. It has a few quirks, but it seems fun to play with. I'm still pretty inexperienced with synths, and this is only my third hardware synth (the other ones being a Volca Bass and a Microkorg), so I'm curious as to what the more serious synth nerds think of it.

On a completely unrelated note, I fell victim to GAS today.... I was in a local music store a few days ago to buy a keyboard stand, and they had an Arturia Minibrute 2 used for $500.. so I went in today and bought it. Does anyone else have one of these things, and if so, do you have any advice? I've been playing with it a bit, and I think it's pretty cool so far. If this is your first tussle and rustle with an Arturia analog synth, I recommend focusing on the Brute Factor control. Not because that's the only thing the MiniBrute 2 can do, but because it's a fun starting point. Also, make sure to make use of the patchbay (you do have cables, don't you? If not, get some cables). Did you get the manual of dope sheets (I think it's called the Arturia MiniBrute 2 Cookbook) with your synth?

I got 8 patch cables with the unit, as well as the cookbook - I suspect that it was purchased for a recent folk festival here to replace a broken or lost Minibrute 2 and then returned to the store after the festival (they had a bunch of keyboard stands for, like, $10 for this reason). I still need to actually read the manual, but I've already made some cool Gnaw Their Tongues type sounds with it. I'm finding it much easier to use than my Microkorg, as with the Microkorg, you had to go through all these menu settings to edit patches, whereas with the Minibrute 2, it has a knob for most settings.

I really need to figure out a workflow for using hardware synths... usually, when I'm making music, I just edit the notes directly in the DAW, and abuse the hell out of copy/paste, but this doesn't work so well with a 4 track recorder and hardware synths.

Welp... after watching a recent BoBeats video on setting up synthesizers DAWlessly, and learning how a MIDI splitter box actually works from said video, I've decided to finally pull the trigger on an order for a Beatstep Pro and a MIDI splitter box to control the synths I've wasted sooo much money on without actually using much. I figure I can use the Beatstep Pro to control the little guys (Volca Bass, Volca FM, Uno, and SR-16) and jam along with the Microkorg S and Minibrute 2.

I have no idea if I could write actual songs with this setup, but it sounds like it would be fun as hell to jam with.

Can you elaborate? How has the beatstep pro, which is pretty cool, change pointless hour long synth jams. What else do you connect it to?

I use it to control my SR-16 and some smaller synths (Volca Bass, Volca FM, and an Uno), and I use its MIDI clock to synchronize my Minibrute 2 and Microkorg. Before, I had a lot of issues getting everything to sync together, although that may be more because of my lack of experience, but since getting the Beatstep Pro, I've learned a lot about how MIDI works. Now that I have everything set up and synchronized, I can actually do pointless hour long synth jams without getting frustrated.

Whoah I wish I could do that. The synth world is really broad isn't it. There are all these little areas of specialization that one could spend a lot of time, and then get bored of it and move on to the next area. As long as you are happy with the results I think it's all that matters. I'm tying to get into the habit of recording something everyday thus I made my dumb thread for me to post in. If i get real obsessive I can spend all night trying to polish a turd. I'm thinking just churn out a lot of music everyday, good, weird, bad, or ugly, doesn't matter. And in time I'll have lots of trippy recordings to listen to. I had a lot of cassette tapes and dead hard drives, and dead myspace pages thus most of my work is lost to time, unfortunately. Oh well

I make a fair amount of music (especially when I'm stressing out), but mostly by programming notes directly into the DAW. Since I got the Beatstep Pro, I've started making loops with it on the computer and working on it from there. I'm currently (lazily) trying to figure out how to do something like this without using a computer, but I'm so used to how you edit stuff in a DAW that I'll just go back to the computer. My older brother used to record songs on a 4 track in the 90s, so I should probably talk to him about this.

It's like "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around" but for noodling on a keyboard. There must be a word for this syndrome, right?

Have a recording device handy, and if you notice you're noodling, and it sounds good, hit Record. I've uploaded the results to my Soundcloud a couple times, but I still need get into the habit of this.. yesterday, I had the hardware synths going, and I would play one and Lola (cat) would walk on the keyboards following my hand, and it actually sounded pretty cool... but I didn't have the recorder ready to go.

Generally, though, I do software synths in the DAW. I'll load up a software synth, mess around with a MIDI keyboard while watching stupid Youtube videos or something (Goontube is great for this), and if I can find some notes that go together, I'll open the MIDI editor and write them in. Lately, I've been working more with the Beatstep Pro - I'll throw together a drum pattern, come up with a pattern of synth hits that sound good, and adjust the notes of those steps until I get something I like.
